Disappointing On Many Fronts

This book came highly recommended to me as I generally love anything associated with WWII, but I was very disappointed. First, the writing is very basic. Secondly, how the narrator ever got hired is beyond me. She mispronounces words and stresses the wrong syllables; she read with all the enthusiasm of a middle-schooler reading their book report or research paper. The producer also did a poor job as there are many times when you hear static, the narrator clearing her throat, or the sentence repeated. Can't recommend on any account.

I first read this book thirty years ago as part of a graduate school seminar on literature from the Vietnam war. Ray Porter does a fantastic job of really bringing the story to life. I got much more out of it from listening to it vs. reading it.

Narrator ruins an otherwise great story

I'm sorry to write that this narrator is one of the worst narrators I've listened to. The story is a classic and is supposed to be an adventure but the narrator's tortured reading of the novel completely ruined the book for me. Most of the time, the narrator didn't attempt to try to distinguish between the characters and when he did, it was inconsistent. Dumas' classic deserves better.

Nearly put me to sleep

Normally, I seek out books read by the author but there are times when it's best to hire a professional. The story was not for me anyway - I just couldn't get behind the ghost of a murdered child that has come back to haunt, get revenge, do whatever to its mother who committed the act - but the whole listening experience was made worse by Morrison's monotone voice whose cadence and pace never varied. If you're looking for a book to put you to sleep, then Morrison's reading of this dreadful story just might do it for you. The fact that this won the Pulitzer Prize makes me question the committee's judgement.

Truly the worst audio book

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

This is truly the worst audio book I had the misfortune of listening to. I suffered through the entire 27 hours and 37 minutes of this excruciating tale of a neurotic woman whom I came to loath and have no respect for. Why this book is on some "must read" lists (which is how I stumbled upon it), I have no idea. I thought nothing was more tedious than listening to other people's dreams but this book disproves my theory. Listening to an author write about a neurotic woman's dreams and having them read aloud to you in a monotone voice is even worse. I'd like the more than 27 hours of my listening time back.

If you could sum up Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls in three words, what would they be?

I was literally laughing out loud about four sentences into the book. David Sedaris' stories and his delivery continue to delight, amuse and relate life as few others can. Although we've lead vastly different lives, I can still relate to the undertones of many of his stories. This book does not disappoint, whether a first-time reader or long-time fan.
