Along with Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, Lucinda Williams has become the standard by which up-and-coming singer/songwriters are measured. Bob talks with Williams about her writing, the influence of her poet-father, Miller Williams, and about her first live album, Live at the Fillmore.

Bob Edwards rules
Revisado: 08-30-05
I grew up listening to Bob Edwards every morning on NPR, and I was heartbroken when he left there. I would probably buy a reading of him reading a grocery list. This episode, the first time I've heard him since he left NPR, proves that he's still got it.
Having said that, this wasn't his best interview ever. He elicits a lot of interesting statements from Lucinda Williams, but the two of them don't always seem to be connecting. I blame that as much on Lucinda as on Bob; she seems sluggish and detached through the whole thing. It is an unfortunate choice on his part to try to elicit a political, antiwar statement from the singer; she's not really a political artist. It's still a good interview, but not Bob's best work.
A nice bonus in this episode is a short interview with Mark Potok of the Southern Poverty Law Center, about the new anti-Semitism in neo-Nazi circles.

Historia
This week in Studio 360, the material is the message. Host Kurt Andersen and curator Paola Antonelli talk about how materials drive art and design. Hear why Pop artist Ed Ruscha started drawing in blood and chocolate. Also, we will listen to a string quartet play four instruments cut from a single maple tree. Plus, a convicted robber takes up embroidery in prison. And, an amateur flutist goes to Mongolia to learn to play like a goatherd.

Chocolate and grass stains and iron, oh my!

This is a fascinating show about all the different materials artists have used over the years, and some of the cutting-edge materials they are using now.

Historia
On this edition of Fresh Air, host Terry Gross speaks with Michael Pollan. To learn more about the meat industry in the US he bought a calf, and then followed the process from fattening it to slaughter. He wrote about it in the Sunday, March 31st issue of The New York Times Magazine. The article "Power Steer" is the cover story. Pollan is also the author of the book, The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World.

One of the best episodes ever
Revisado: 08-30-05
I like Terry Gross best when she's interviewing a writer about a topic of current interest. This is one of my all-time favorite episodes: it's a fascinating and informative discussion of an eye-catching topic. Michael Pollan makes it clear that he has no problem eating meat, and he doesn't preach; his tone is clear and informative. What he says is a real eye-opener.

I would have liked a different accent better
Revisado: 08-30-05
These stories are classics, but I wasn't crazy about the reader's ultra-plummy Shakespearean accent. My husband wasn't bothered by it.
