Historia
A peaceful summer night is shattered by gunfire as an unseen assailant tries to murder police officer John Busby. Though horribly wounded, Busby survives. But the perpetrator remains at large, meaning neither Busby, nor his wife, nor their three children are safe. In separate chapters John and his daughter, Cylin, who was nine at the time, recount the story of that year. John writes graphically, and movingly, of his wounds, his pain, his multiple surgeries, and his rage.

Heartbreaking. Justice just out of reach.
Revisado: 01-07-14
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, perfect example of how bad things happen when good men stand by and do nothing. The man who shot John Busby got by with it because he was a bully who scared others into LETTING him get by with it all.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
It made me feel sorry for the family, made me appreciate those who take public service seriously and made me MAD as hell at those who stand by and do nothing.

Historia
At the height of World War II, Oak Ridge, Tennessee, was home to 75,000 residents, consuming more electricity than New York City. But to most of the world, the town did not exist. Thousands of civilians - many of them young women from small towns across the South - were recruited to this secret city, enticed by solid wages and the promise of war-ending work. Kept very much in the dark, few would ever guess the true nature of the tasks they performed each day in the hulking factories in the middle of the Appalachian Mountains.

"My name is Tucker Max, and I am an asshole. I get excessively drunk at inappropriate times, disregard social norms, indulge every whim, ignore the consequences of my actions, mock idiots and posers, sleep with more women than is safe or reasonable, and just generally act like a raging dickhead. But, I do contribute to humanity in one very important way: I share my adventures with the world."

Pointless filth...not funny
Revisado: 12-31-13
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Nothing...this is just not for me at all.
What was most disappointing about Tucker Max’s story?
The fact that a person would be PROUD of being an arrogant ass and treating people like trash. Also, the fact that another human would LET him.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Tucker Max?
Anyone! He reads WAY too fast and his puctuation is so bad that it is hard to follow.

The acclaimed writer A. M. Homes was given up for adoption before she was born. Her biological mother was a twenty-two-year-old single woman who was having an affair with a much older married man with a family of his own. The Mistress's Daughter is the ruthlessly honest account of what happened when, thirty years later, her birth parents came looking for her.

Zero emotion in this book....which is very strange
Revisado: 12-31-13
What disappointed you about The Mistress's Daughter?
There really was no story to tell. Like the author wrote a book for the sake of writing a book. No caring or feeling in this one.
Has The Mistress's Daughter turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, not at all.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Very monotone and cold

Slow moving
Revisado: 12-31-13
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Eh....not really. The book moves VERY slow and then at the end when it starts to get interesting it seems as though the writer just wanted to finish the book and rushed through writing it. Probably could've taken the story farther at that point and left out most of the first half of the book.

Historia
What would you do if you were given the opportunity to become another person - one whose life promised to be more glamorous and prosperous than your own? That was the question posed to Judith Patterson when, at age 33, she met the birth mother who had given her up for adoption as a child, who now revealed to her an extraordinary secret. Patterson, her mother told her, was the illegitimate daughter of a Texas oil mogul, one of the most powerful businessmen in the country in his day.

Potential for a good story here.
Revisado: 12-31-13
What disappointed you about The Oilman's Daughter?
It was definitely too short. There was some potential here for a really interesting story but I feel like too much was left out. I think there was more to all this but we never find out what it is really.
What does Evan Ratliff bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Nothing outstanding but the narrator was good. I've definitely listened to better books with WAY worse narrators.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Revisado: 12-31-13
What made the experience of listening to Water for Elephants the most enjoyable?
The narrators were great and a perfect match for this story.
What does David LeDoux and John Randolph Jones bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Both narrators have such emotion in their voices. It really makes you feel what the character is going through.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Not really....just a good story. I'm more of a non-fiction reader but this was still a great story.

Would you listen to The Boy at the Gate again? Why?
Yes! This book is so beautifully written and so full of meaningful content that I would listen again in hopes of catching anything missed the first time.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Danny himself. He is a GREAT storyteller and has quite a story to tell!
Any additional comments?
If you liked Angela's Ashes, then The Boy At The Gate is an absolute MUST read!! I am a HUGE fan of Frank McCourt and never thought anyone would be able to come close to being compared to him. Then I met Danny. Danny's story is heart wrenching and heart warming all at the same time. What an extraordinary man and an extraordinary storyteller! Hearing him tell the story in his own voice is absolutely priceless. I literally laughed and cried at the same time on multiple occasions. I cannot sing the praises of this book high enough. I have suggested it to everyone I know!

Historia
Growing up, Molly Walling could not fathom the source of the dark and intense discomfort in her family home. Then, in 2006, she discovered her father's complicity in the murder of two Black men on December 12, 1946, in Anguilla, deep in the Mississippi Delta. Death in the Delta tells the story of one woman's search for the truth behind a closely held, 60-year-old family secret. Though the author's mother and father decided that they would protect their three children from that past, its effect was profound.

Revisado: 08-22-13
Would you try another book from Molly Walling and/or Angela L. Rice?
Molly Walling? Yes. Angela Rice? NO
What did you like best about this story?
Great story of family secrets.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
No feeling whatsoever!! VERY robotic in speaking. Punctuation was awful and absolutely NO feel for the southern dialect which is SUPER important in this particular book. The narrator is SO bad that it is hard to stay focused on the actual story line.
Any additional comments?
If I were the author of this book I would be furious with the narrator for ruining my writing.
