Historia
In Argus, North Dakota, a collection of people revolve around a fraught wedding. Gary Geist, a terrified young man set to inherit two farms, is desperate to marry Kismet Poe, an impulsive, lapsed Goth who can't read her future but seems to resolve his. Hugo, a gentle red-haired, home-schooled giant, is also in love with Kismet. He’s determined to steal her and is eager to be a home wrecker. Kismet's mother, Crystal, hauls sugar beets for Gary's family, and on her nightly runs, tunes into the darkness of late-night radio, sees visions of guardian angels.

Just kind of blah

Just such a sloooow start. Don’t love the narrator. She reads like she knows a back joke that we don’t know.

Good story with very good actors. Had a little “To Kill a Mockingbird” flavor but, really, that book is so wonderful that it’s ok for this to be a re-telling with some character twists.

I was entertained and intrigued by some of the characters. Loved the narrator. Some elements of the storyline were a little implausible but, hey, what’s a novel for!!

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

I’m just confused
Revisado: 11-10-23
How is this book an award winner? It is a copy of David Copperfield down to the almost identical character names, descriptions, and outcomes. What am I missing?! The detailed descriptions of drug use/abuse I can do without—the language is offensive. I’m going to re-read David Copperfield to remind myself what is real literature.

Really great read/listen
Revisado: 10-25-23
Poignant and funny—this book will have you laughing and crying a little at the exploits of the aging protagonist. Landry really brings Tapscott to life, and you might find yourself turning up the ac during the descriptions of the Louisiana heat. Looking forward to the sequel!
