Historia
In The Half Has Never Been Told, historian Edward E. Baptist reveals the alarming extent to which slavery shaped our country politically, morally, and most of all, economically. Until the Civil War, our chief form of innovation was slavery. Through forced migration and torture, slave owners extracted continual increases in efficiency from their slaves, giving the country a virtual monopoly on the production of cotton, a key raw material of the Industrial Revolution.

Good history of the economics of slavery
Revisado: 05-03-18
Expanded my understanding of the ‘whys’ of slavery and the economics that created the political environment.
I wish it was more directly about economics and that connection to politics. I think that the author tried to wrap too many additional connections into it. Those were interesting but served to confuse the thesis a little.

Historia
The National Baseball Hall of Fame is the holiest institution in American sports. It’s not just a place to honor great athletes. It’s where America’s pastime announces to the world what it is and what it wants to be. It’s not just a sports museum; it’s a mirror of American culture. As Zev Chafets points out, it’s no coincidence that the first black Hall of Famer, Jackie Robinson, was inducted in 1962, at the height of the civil rights movement. Or that the Hall is now planning a wing to honor Latino players.

Decent 'Story' but Narration Annoying
Revisado: 01-30-18
The good: the story and opinions are good - not great. Be aware that it is not as much about the rogues IN the hall of fame (of which there are many) but the rogues OF the hall. It is great info that is not elsewhere but maybe not as riveting to some.
The bad: the story is incomplete and is more of a singular opinion on many things and does not fully develop both sides of many of the arguments.
The ugly: the narrators voice intonations were horrible. Listening at 1.25 speed made it easier to listen too. I do not know what he was doing, the inflections were just wrong - dramatic inflections maybe but oddly placed and very repetitive. I'll avoid in the future.

Historia
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed. Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil’s name.

Needs updates
Revisado: 12-12-17
I read the book years ago when it came out. It is a great overview of the game and really does make the reader baseball smarter. But, baseball evolves and this book needs some minor updates to maintain relevancy. Overall, I was still happy to listen - a very easy and quick and enjoyable time!

Historia
The Arsenal of Democracy tells the incredible story of how Detroit answered the call, centering on Henry Ford and his tortured son Edsel, who, when asked if they could deliver 50,000 airplanes, made an outrageous claim: Ford Motor Company would erect a plant that could yield a “bomber an hour”. Critics scoffed: Ford didn’t make planes; they made simple, affordable cars. But bucking his father’s resistance, Edsel charged ahead.

Revisado: 08-04-16
The Arsenal of Democracy is a decent story but not at all what I expected or what the title led me to believe. There was a lot more to the story from FDR and Detroit in creating the Arsenal of Democracy. Unfortunately, this story would better be titled Edsel Ford: Getting out of dad's shadow, overcoming dad's henchman, his love of airplanes, and his role in creating the arsenal of democracy.

Hmm... states the problem but no answer
Revisado: 08-04-16
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
Baseball fanatics and those that want to hear an incomplete story. The author has a young son and does not want him to be hurt. I have a son that I don't want to be hurt. The promise of an answer is never satisfied... The problem is somewhat defined but the genesis of WHY the problem occurs or how to fix it is NEVER revealed. I guess there is no answer YET. Maybe this book will spur the scientific research that is needed to answer this.

Historia
In The Dorito Effect, Mark Schatzker shows us how our approach to the nation's number-one public health crisis has gotten it wrong. The epidemics of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes are not tied to the overabundance of fat or carbs. Instead we have been led astray by the growing divide between flavor - the tastes we crave - and the underlying nutrition.

Good idea, too long winded
Revisado: 01-29-16
An article would have been of sufficient length for the story. It makes some thought provoking points but I continually wanted the book to get to the punchline.

The story was great and gave my 10-year old daughter the idea to write from the perspective of an animal. She is now writing a book about the lost dog we found and then found a way to get home.
