Historia
Verity Jane, gifted app whisperer, takes a job as the beta tester for a new product: a digital assistant, accessed through a pair of ordinary-looking glasses. "Eunice", the disarmingly human AI in the glasses, manifests a face, a fragmentary past, and a canny grasp of combat strategy. Realizing that her cryptic new employers don’t yet know how powerful and valuable Eunice is, Verity instinctively decides that it’s best they don’t.

Hamfisted Sequel
Revisado: 02-07-24
This was a prime example of the follow-up being no where near the quality of the original. The author preaches his politics in the most lackluster ways (White woman good! Orange man bad! EU good! Brexit bad!), doubling down on the worst aspects of the first book. He also went from the whodunnit mystery of the first book to a paint by numbers. The readers, along with the main character, have no idea what's going on the entire book. This is the "And then?" of novels.

While only a sub-hour long book, this does more to inform the reader and prove the (in)correctness of the LDS Church than any Sunday School, Seminary, or Institute class I ever attended.

Buyer Beware
Revisado: 05-18-23
I bought this on the recommendation of a group of small business owners. I should have looked further into it. It has such a strong start and then devolves into a religion that couldn't be less based on the idea of being in charge of your own life and situation. How the author holds these contradictory ideas in his head is beyond me. Credit wasted.

Historia
Religious fundamentalists and biblical literalists present any number of arguments that attempt to disprove evolution. Those with a sympathetic ear often fail to critically examine these creationist claims, leading to an ill-informed public and, perhaps more troubling, ill-advised public policy. As Aron Ra makes clear, however, every single argument deployed by creationists in their attacks on evolution is founded on fundamental scientific, religious, and historical falsehoods - all of them.

Worth a listen, and a relisten, and another
Revisado: 03-19-23
Aron's style might not be for everyone, he's well-versed, unapologetic, and a bit braggadocios. And I couldn't have asked for a better book. This book is everything I wish I had learned growing up, instead of being indoctrinated by the same high-demand religion Aron narrowly avoided (LDS/Mormons). This is the textbook I wish I had back then. I'm so glad I found it now and I can't wait to come back to this excellent resource and entertaining narration again and again.

Historia
The original Dungeons & Dragons released by TSR (Tactical Studies Rules) in 1974 created a radical new medium: the role-playing game. For the next two decades, TSR rocketed to success. But by 1997, a series of ruinous choices and failed projects brought TSR to the edge of doom—only to be saved by their fiercest competitor, Wizards of the Coast. Unearthed from Ben Riggs’s own adventurous campaign of in-depth research, interviews with major players, and acquisitions of secret documents, Slaying the Dragon reveals the true story of the rise and fall of TSR.

Fascinating and Well-Researched
Revisado: 03-19-23
Kudos to the author for what was a well researched book told in a very compelling way. I especially appreciated the even-handed way he dealt with the few people he was unable to interview before writing this story. If you only read one book on this topic, this is the one I'd recommend.

Most books about the history of humanity pursue either a historical or a biological approach, but Dr. Yuval Noah Harari breaks the mold with this highly original book. From examining the role evolving humans have played in the global ecosystem to charting the rise of empires, Sapiens integrates history and science to reconsider accepted narratives, connect past developments with contemporary concerns, and examine specific events within the context of larger ideas.

It started so well...
Revisado: 03-19-23
I really, really enjoyed Part 1. Part 2 was okay but was sadly over-simplified and slightly biased. Part 3 just launches itself off a cliff. If you buy into the U.S.'s 2 party system and have dedicated yourself to cheering for the team they call "Left", you'll really enjoy the preaching to the choir. For anyone else, this probably isn't for you.

This is a search for truth. Every week, we will take a deep dive into the real facts behind each question posed by the CES letter, and analyze the CES letter reply to distinguish fact from fiction. Both have inaccuracies. Both have an agenda. But we will dig deep and see which have history on their side. This podcast is written and recorded by Lani Lee, a fully practicing member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, and full-time BYU student, who has become increasingly disillusioned with the Church's policies and history. If you would like to follow along each week, there is a ...

Revisado: 07-31-22
I had hoped this would be an honest evaluation of the letter and the reply. instead it's just a "reading" of the reply with the letter given a "sinister" tone and the reply a "gosh golly mister" tone. She even compliments the reply for using humor to avoid having any honest conversation. If this woman is questioning her faith, then I'm the tooth fairy...

Charlie Gordon knows that he isn't very bright. At 32, he mops floors in a bakery and earns just enough to get by. Three evenings a week, he studies at a center for mentally challenged adults. But all of this is about to change for Charlie. As part of a daring experiment, doctors are going to perform surgery on Charlie's brain. They hope the operation and special medication will increase his intelligence, just as it has for the laboratory mouse, Algernon.

I decided to give the longer version a shot after catching the short story version in the SciFi compilation. On the one hand, there used to be so many more resources and help for the mentally impaired and that was fascinating to watch play out. On the other hand, it made it that much harder to read and process.

Liberals scoff when conservatives denounce Obama and his policies as socialist. After all, they argue, Obama isn’t Stalin and America is nothing like the Soviet Union. But socialism doesn’t always resemble the Berlin Wall or the Iron Curtain, as National Review editor Kevin Williamson proves in his new book, The Politically Incorrect Guide to Socialism.

It Starts So Well...
Revisado: 04-20-21
This book was so good... when it stuck to the facts, the history, and the information regarding prices. And then about 2 hours from the end, it just goes off the rails. All of the sudden it's knee deep in fear-mongering, pro-Isreal, anti-peace with such gusto that I had to make sure it was the same book. it brings it back around at the very end but it still leaves a sour aftertaste. Yet another almost great book that I'd never recommend to a friend lest they start thinking I'm some conspiracy theory nut.

Historia
Greg Donahue’s The Minuteman, tells the story of one of Newark’s native sons; ex-prizefighter and longtime Zwillman enforcer Sidney Abramowitz, a.k.a. Nat Arno, who took over leadership of the Minutemen in 1934 and made it his personal business to put an end to what he saw as the Bund’s “anti-American” activities. For six years, Arno and his crew of vigilantes battled Newark’s Nazis at every turn. The Minuteman is a story of the ethics of violence in the face of fascism; a forgotten legacy that is as relevant now as it was nearly a hundred years ago.

No One To Root For

Two groups of ultra-violent people with superiority complexes, proficient at dehumanizing each other, attack each other. We're supposed to cheer for one of these groups and agree with the dehumanization of the other... but I personally just found both groups to be sad, disturbing, and contemptible.
