Historia
Wendell Combs is as local as they come. Born and raised in the small town of Saybrook, Connecticut, his venture into the larger world was met with heartbreak. Now, middle-aged and a confirmed bachelor, he seeks solitude from his tour of duty as a soldier back in his hometown, working as head caretaker for wealthy Alan Lancaster’s forty-acre estate, White Pines, a place he has come to love for its beauty, peace, and quiet.

My only complaint was there were too many characters. I have trouble remembering who's who but I was able to follow the main characters and just let the others go.

Historia
Biblical womanhood - the belief that God designed women to be submissive wives, virtuous mothers, and joyful homemakers - pervades North American Christianity. From choices about careers to roles in local churches to relationship dynamics, this belief shapes the everyday lives of evangelical women. Yet biblical womanhood isn't biblical, says Baylor University historian Beth Allison Barr. It was born in a series of clearly definable historical moments.

Good argument but I also need theology
Revisado: 07-24-22
Allison Barr is a historian and does not claim to be a theologian. She makes a persuasive and powerful argument from an historical and cultural perspective. Her theory about Paul's writing doesn't go far enough. It left me wanting the theological piece before I am able to say that I believe this book. I do admit that I have always seen the biblical contradictions to the teachings of evangelicals on the subject of women in the church. However, being a nerd, I did not get an adequate explanation here.

I like romance but I need more
Revisado: 04-02-22
I like a little romance along with a very good story. This book is maximun romance with numerous sex scenes and not much else. It was very predictable, over the top sugary sweet, eye rolling love dialog with almost no conflict at all to spice things up. Just not my cup of tea.
Julia Whelan is an exraordinary narrator, but even she couldn't save it for me. The story goes back and forth between the two main characters. Julia Whelan does a decent male voice when she tells her side of things but the male reader does an icky artificial female voice. I kept wishing Julia was speaking when he did her character's voice.

This is a pleasant little respite from real life
Revisado: 09-12-21
Julia Whelan is as good as it gets as a narrator. I thoroughly enjoy her. The story is predictable and somtimes goes on and on about the characters feelings but even so, it was a lovely story.

This is a great story and a wonderful narration.
Revisado: 04-22-21
At first I thought it was going to go on and on about the consequences of Addie's bad decision and that's all there is. Then, the real story began to develop. I loved it. Julia Whelan, one of my favorite narrators was just spectacular with this book. Luke's voice was knowable without him needing to identify himself. This is now one of my all time favorites.

Heart wrenching story
Revisado: 04-03-21
In the beginning, I wasn't sure if I would like this book. The main character was on the dull side and her family was really unlikeable. I really need to like at least one of the characters to enjoy a book. While I was busy hating her original family and disliking her new family (she was a teenager forced into a shotgun wedding), her character began to grow and I started to empathize with her. As she persevered through unthinkable suffering while unconditionally loving her children, I started to root for her. The terrible things she lived through really put our current discomfort with the pandemic into perspective. I was sorry when it ended...I just wanted the story to continue.

Revisado: 02-03-21
I don't know how to write a review that isn't a spoiler. Each thing that Bob did was a pleasure for me to experience and I don't want to ruin it for you. I was entertained by his humor and facinated by his creativity. I don't know when a book has made me smile so much. There were amusing references throughout to Star Trek and Star Wars that I loved. Overall, it was just fun. A perfect escape.

A different story told with a well-used method
Revisado: 08-02-20
I really liked the story and the narration. It's told by switching back and forth between the past and the present. Each chapter begins with the name of the character and the date. This is the third book this year that I've read (listened to) that followed the exact same format. It works but it's starting to seem stale. That said, I still enjoyed it and I liked the ending.
