Worth the time
Revisado: 12-12-12
What did you like best about this story?
I first read this as a battered paperback long ago, and remembered that I liked the story. Hearing the audiobook reminded me of why! It's a well-plotted story in the classic Agatha Christie mode.
What about Hugh Fraser’s performance did you like?
Hugh Fraser did an excellent job with the pacing of the narration, which moved briskly without my feeling rushed.

Narration at its best
Revisado: 12-12-12
If you could sum up The Fellowship of the Ring in three words, what would they be?
sensitive, nuanced, well-paced
Have you listened to any of Rob Inglis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
Rob Inglis' reading was spot-on; the pace was fast enough but he also was true to the poetry and delight in Tolkein's rich and vivid language throughout. Don't be discouraged that it's only one reader; this version is by far the best!

Great story, but . . .
Revisado: 06-02-09
I've love the book for many years, and had looked forward with great anticipation to the audio version. Things which bothered other reviewers didn't bother me overmuch - the grunting voices are actually almost authentic (if grating) - it's a style common in Kabuki theater. I was deeply disappointed, however, that a professional production staff could turn out a program in which the pronunciation of the most basic Japanese phrases (which are integral to the story) were so horribly mangled. I couldn't get past the lack of authenticity in the repeated pronunciations that would have taken a hour for the reader to learn with a even a casual speaker of Japanese. Clavell's depiction of the subtleties of Japanese culture deserved better.

Historia
January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb.... As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends - and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is.

I didn't want the story to end
Revisado: 06-02-09
This is a truly engaging book, and is very well presented in the audio recording. The readers seemed to have genuinely engaged with their characters, and varied the pace of their narration to suit the different tempos of the letters and telegrams. I didn't want it to end!

Audiobook review
Revisado: 10-15-08
Steven Crossly turned in a fine performance reading this absorbing tale. The story starts out slowly, but picks up speed as the plot develops. I particularly appreciated Crossly's pacing, which keeps the story moving, but also allows the listener to absorb the myriad complex details which author C.J. Sansom embedded throughout the narrative.
Good historical fiction is hard to find - C.J. Sansom's well-researched novels help to fill a major void.

Deeply disappointing
Revisado: 08-07-08
I don't require or even enjoy excessive emotion (including imitating "foreign" accents) in a narrator's voice while reading classic books. After 5 minutes of this performance, however, I was numbed by the completely leaden voices, devoid of any expression. Derek Jacobi's recorded Holmes stories are infinitely superior. Unfortunately, he hasn't done the entire set of stories (yet).
