Kirsten Raymonde will never forget the night Arthur Leander, the famous Hollywood actor, had a heart attack on stage during a production of King Lear. That was the night when a devastating flu pandemic arrived in the city, and within weeks, civilization as we know it came to an end.

Really good story
Revisado: 09-14-24
The audio performance was great. The story was super interesting. It spared a lot of the cliches of other post apocalyptic novels. The idea of music and theater continuing was cool. I felt that the hinge pin, Arthur, was weak and unlikeable, so at the end I didn’t really care much about him or his legacy. The ancillary characters were much better. There was also some loose ends that could’ve been tied up to make it a little more worth the wait.

Historia
Isolated by a disfiguring injury since the age of seventeen, Sean Phillips crafts imaginary worlds for strangers to play in. From his small apartment in southern California, he orchestrates fantastic adventures where possibilities, both dark and bright, open in the boundaries between the real and the imagined. As the creator of Trace Italian—a text-based, role-playing game played through the mail—Sean guides players from around the world through his intricately imagined terrain, which they navigate and explore, turn by turn, seeking sanctuary in a ravaged, savage future America.

Nothing like it that I've seen/read
Revisado: 04-10-24
This is a unique novel. It is strange yet compelling. I found the pace a bit hard to latch on to at first, but after I got it down, it was easy to follow. What I like most is that the author allows the reader to come to his own conclusions without guiding him to a conclusion that was preordained. It left me thinking, and I am still thinking about it days later. It is one of those books that I will use to compare other books to. I don't want to list many plot points for fear of spoiling it, but the idea that a drastic accident causes someone to create an alternate universe in the form of a mail order role playing game is something that I never thought would exist, let alone hold my attention throughout. I would hesitate to recommend this book to anyone who doesn't have a wide scope of interests or a tolerance for this unique style (sort of like Chuck Palaniuk). If you do read it, I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Slow burn to a fizzle
Revisado: 11-22-23
Stephen King said the best horror novel of the 21st century so far. It must’ve come out January 2000. It’s ok. Would’ve been an equally good short story.

Exhausting protagonist
Revisado: 05-11-23
I always preface my reviews with: could I do better than the author? No.
The protagonist is supposed to be the “top of her class” in everything FBI related, yet she can’t hold it together, ever. How did she ever focus enough to complete basic FBI training, let alone finish at the top?
I found myself getting so tired of her breakdowns and inabilities to function at times and her lack of the stoic virtue I’d expect from a dynamic agent.
The narrator was great.

Narrator ruined it
Revisado: 09-21-22
I tried really hard to get used to the narrator, but his breathing and changes in volume drove me to checking out and reading the actual book. I’m not lazy; I read a lot, but I was hoping this would make my commute more enjoyable, and all it did was leave me irritated that I couldn’t immerse myself into the setting because of the distracting narration.

Great story by an interesting person
Revisado: 06-18-21
I found this book after reading an article in the Chicago Tribune. Man, am I glad I did.
The author/narrator is so positive and energetic, yet it is easy to feel the darker imagery of the back story of the carnies he meets.
He is so worldly and intelligent that I found it easy to consider his remarks on the many subjects covered in this book.
I would recommend this to anyone with the desire to learn about human behavior and anyone who loves a good journey story.
I feel like I learned something and like I have more empathy for others. That’s no small feat for a book about a guy hitchhiking to carnivals.

Revisado: 06-09-21
I’ve read a few self-help parenting books, but this one felt different; it is more causal and flows well. The narrator (author) is charismatic and down to earth.
I enjoyed it and plan to incorporate a lot of in to my daily life.

Great for me (beginner)
Revisado: 12-01-19
I’ve tried a few other meditation apps/recordings. I like how this one uses movement. I always struggled with sitting completely still and often lost focus. I find myself more focused during these affirmations. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to feel good in the morning.
