Best in the series.

Might be the best one in the series. Very entertaining. The one issue I have is small, the author overuses the expression ‘raised an eyebrow.’

Historia
Having inspired a classic film and Broadway play, The Caine Mutiny is Herman Wouk's boldly dramatic, brilliantly entertaining novel of life—and mutiny—on a Navy warship in the Pacific theater. It was immediately embraced upon its original publication as one of the first serious works of American fiction to grapple with the moral complexities and the human consequences of the Second World War. In the intervening half century, this gripping story has become a perennial favorite, selling millions throughout the world, and claiming the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Herman Wouk is a great story teller.
Revisado: 04-12-19
This was the second time I’ve read this novel, the first being long enough ago that I remembered less than I thought. So that was good news.
The better news is that within minutes of starting to listen to this novel, I did recall that Wouk’s stories were always fun. I’d forgotten though how well the storylines interweave and how he is able to carry the story at many levels. At once, it’s a basic tale built around a very unique set of circumstances that make it all together unique; and woven throughout is a well tempered use of symbolism.
I can’t say enough good things about this novel.

Historia
During the course of a career that began in the late 1940s, Lenny Bruce challenged the sanctity of organized religion and other societal and political conventions; he widened the boundaries of free speech. Critic Ralph Gleason said, "So many taboos have been lifted and so many comics have rushed through the doors Lenny opened. He utterly changed the world of comedy". Although Bruce died when he was only 40, his influence on the worlds of comedy, jazz, and satire are incalculable.

Where is the Lenny Bruce of this era?
Revisado: 02-20-19
Before reading his Autobiography, I thought Lenny Bruce was just a stand up comic who got in trouble for using dirty words in his performance.
I had no idea how adept he was as a serious social commentator. He was spot on in his comedy as he revealed the hypocrisy of ‘the establishment.’ As well, he fought like a tiger for the 1st Amendment, which, our current generation of leaders, from both sides, want to trample into Soviet-Like silence.

Didn’t Disappoint
Revisado: 11-25-18
I’ve read quite a few of Anthony Horowitz’s books, beginning when I read the Alex Rider series to my them young son.
As well, when I was younger, I read most of the Ian Fleming Bond novels, loving them all.
So my expectations were high when I started Forever and a Day. I was not disappointed. Horowitz delivered a heck of a story that aligned well with the James Bond I’ve grown to love.

Bellow evokes all the rich colour and exotic customs of a highly imaginary Africa in this comic novel about a middle-aged American millionaire who, seeking a new, more rewarding life, descends upon an African tribe. Henderson's awesome feats of strength and his unbridled passion for life earns him the admiration of the tribe - but it is his gift for making rain that turns him from mere hero into messiah.

I Didn’t Like the Interview After the End of the Novel
Revisado: 02-06-18
I loved everything about this except for the weird interview put in after the close of the novel. It had nothing to do with the story. No doubt, it was meant to be about Bellow, and I get that. The trouble is the Interviewee never said anything despite talking nonstop through the entire interview.

A fictional portrayal of an aging revolutionary, this novel is a powerful commentary on the nightmare politics of the troubled 20th century. Born in Hungary in 1905, a defector from the Communist Party in 1938, and then arrested in both Spain and France for his political views, Arthur Koestler writes from a wealth of personal experience.

Relevance Holds Over Time
Revisado: 11-09-17
Allow me to state up front that I am not a practiced reviewer of books.
That said, I maintain a strong interest in political philosophy and the history of political thought. And while there were many profound monologues in this book, the theme that stuck out to me is the importance of freedom of thought.
I highlight this because the injustice dealt out by The Party for thinking or stating anything deemed ‘political incorrect’ rings familiar. First rule in maintaining complete control over a group of people is to define, somewhat vaguely, what they can and can not say or think.
How different are the methods used by The Party to control speech than those used by Today’s Group, that arbitrarily defines what words are Politically Correct, uses to shame and crush anyone who states something that they view as offensive.
Freedom of Speech and thought is without a doubt going to create situations where someone is going to feel offended. I love this quote and believe it captures the idea better than any others.
In The Friends of Voltaire, Hall wrote the phrase: "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

Still, they persevere, and their relationship comes to represent goodness in a world of utter devastation.

This Novel Will Gain Full Acceptance As One Of The Greats
Revisado: 09-04-17
I first read McCarthy years ago when someone suggested "All the Pretty Horses" to me. I really enjoyed the book and then went on to read a couple more. I stopped about halfway through the third one, deciding I had read enough of McCarthy to get his point.
I held off reading this one since it first came out despite all of the accolades given to it. I finally made the plunge and what a plunge.
This novel, though filled with desperation, blew me away. I could not put it down. I thought about Stephen King's novel "The Stand", which I think is probably his best, while reading "The Road". "The Road" is simply more terrifying because it is all together so believable.
While I am not preparing for an apocalypse, I can easily imagine the aftermath of one being very similar to the one in which this story is set.
"The Road" is a must read novel.

A Must Read for Anyone Trying to Grasp from Which 'Out of the Blue' Dimension the Opiate Epidemic Arose
Revisado: 01-20-17
So I'm a middle aged father of a pre-teen son. Luckily I wasn't the right age to be a target for the spread of Opiates. I heard about the overdoses but honestly never paid a great deal of attention to them, being busy with my own life.
But I've always been curious to learn if the epidemic was somehow being blown out of proportion to keep the 24 Hour News Cycle going, or alternatively if it was really true.
Finally someone who is only a couple of degrees separated from suffered a fatal overdose. A young boy with seemingly a lot going for him. At that point I understood how very true the epidemic is and wanted to learn about where it came from.
This book crystallized it for me. The Author did a fantastic job of connecting the dots. And for a father of a preteen boy, I believe now that the danger is much greater than I had understood. Like many parents, I know that there will always be unknowns when raising a child, but at least now I know that this monster is far bigger and meaner than I'd ever expected.

This is a truly remarkable novel. In my opinion it is Steinbeck's best. If he had only written one book and this was it, that would be the only thing he need do to solidify his place among the greatest novelist of the 20th Century.

Universally acclaimed as a musical genius, Miles Davis was one of the most important and influential musicians in the world. Here, Miles speaks out about his extraordinary life. Miles: The Autobiography, like Miles himself, holds nothing back. For the first time Miles talks about his five-year silence. He speaks frankly and openly about his drug problem and how he overcame it. He condemns the racism he encountered in the music business and in American society generally. And he discusses the women in his life.

Miles Davis Was the Artist Who Drew Me Into Jazz Music
Revisado: 01-25-16
I'm not a musician but have always wanted to be. For whatever reason, mostly lack of ability, I've never been able to learn an instrument. But I love listening to music, all types. At some point a long time ago I was listening to a lot of Grateful Dead - I love the Jerry songs, and realized that it must be very close to Jazz. Knowing very little about Jaxx I started picking up some CDs. And then bam, I bought Steamin and it changed my whole music orientation. I loved that album even though I couldn't explain to anyone what was going on. bIt was the mood that I loved, and his trumpet playing.
I didn't understand that he was such a rebel until I listened to this book. He's so similar to me, seeing rules as suggestions, recipes as something to use as a basis for making something better and thumbing my nose at authority.
I love Miles and even more so now. The whole time I was listening I kept wondering what I would say or ask him if I'd ever had a chance. Alas, I'll never know. Peace.
