Historia
Kiese Laymon is a fearless writer. In his essays, personal stories combine with piercing intellect to reflect both on the state of American society and on his experiences with abuse, which conjure conflicted feelings of shame, joy, confusion, and humiliation. Laymon invites us to consider the consequences of growing up in a nation wholly obsessed with progress yet wholly disinterested in the messy work of reckoning with where we’ve been.

Historia
A small Georgia town erupts in panic when a young college professor is found brutally mutilated in the local diner. But it's only when town pediatrician and coroner Sara Linton does the autopsy that the full extent of the killer's twisted work becomes clear. Sara's ex-husband, Police Chief Jeffrey Tolliver, leads the investigation - a trail of terror that grows increasingly macabre when another local woman is found crucified a few days later.

Some factual inconsistencies that would have been cleared up with a tougher edit but overall good thriller.

Sssssss the actor can't speak clearly
Revisado: 08-11-17
Listen to a sample before buying.
The actor is probably a fine person but drags his s's and ch's and it drives me crazy... not what I would expect from a serious paid performance

Historia
Five figures gather 'round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult-sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken, but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood. Years later a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders that shock the Black Country.

Enjoyed this book.... A little stretched in places.... She is more rebellious than would be tolerated in reality.

Hard to Rate
Revisado: 05-09-05
Ok - the main character is a bomb - the author uses the typical self destructive actions and unfocused anger to convey/cover her sorrow and grief. How she still has any friends is completely a mystery - why people are attracted to her is a mystery.
But I give this book a high rating for the protrayal of a high functioning autistic man - the son of the boss. The narrator does an excellent job conveying the strange speech patterns of an autistic person. And the author does a good job of using an autistic's different way of thinking/seeing the world to help with the investigation. My seven year old son has high functioning autism and I see the limitations and extraordinary abilities first hand everyday. One fault on this character - while I think my son would love the riddles - and no he can not solve problems like the ones in this novel - he could never visit these crime scenes without having a meltdown and subsequent nightmares / anxiety.

Historia
Greenwich, southeast London. The Met's crack murder squad is called out by nervous CID detectives to a grim discovery. Five bodies have been found, all young women, all ritualistically murdered, dumped on wasteland near the Millennium Dome. When a post-mortem examination reveals a singular, horrific signature linking the victims, officers realize that they are on the trail of the most dangerous offender known to the force: a sexual serial killer.

Great Modern Detective Novel

One of my favorite "listens" since I joined audible. Be warned the contents are graphic (think CSI) but the characters are engaging - I wanted to know more about them with each passing minute. Reader is great as well.

Disturbing
Revisado: 04-30-05
Birdman is a graphic detective novel concerning a serial rapist / mutilator. Not for the faint of heart, but I loved the detective work.
This novel "The Treatment" picks up approximately one year later and focuses on the serial killer/pedophile. Several times I was tempted to stop listening, but I just had to know more about Caffey's missing brother. I would give this book a four stars, but the violence against children drops it to a 3.
