Tedious Poirot
Revisado: 09-18-24
This book has the most moralizing Poirot I’ve ever read, not to mention his verbosity and deep dive into the psychology behind every actions and motive. Dear-me, so much navel gazing and introspection induces boredom. Agatha would have kept the plot bubbling along with more action, fewer words, a more impact book and far more enjoyment.

As Canon Daniel Clement tries to steady his flock, the parish is joined with Upper and Lower Badsaddle, bringing a new tide of unwanted change. But church politics soon become the least of Daniel's problems. His mother - headstrong, fearless Audrey - is obviously up to something, something she is determined to keep from him. And she is not the only one.

Historia
Ever since disgraced associate Orrie Cather’s suicide, armchair detective Nero Wolfe has relished retirement in his Manhattan brownstone on West 35th Street. Two years after Cather’s death, only a visit from Maria Radovich - and the urging of Wolfe’s prize assistant, Archie Goodwin - could draw the eccentric and reclusive genius back into business. Maria’s uncle, New York Symphony Orchestra conductor Milan Stevens, formerly known as Milos Stefanovic, spent his youth alongside Wolfe as a fellow freedom fighter in the mountains of Montenegro.

As a continuation, post, Mortem, of a well loved author, this is among the better works. For anyone who fell in love with the Nero Wolfe’s “oevre,” this will be greeted with great appreciation.

Historia
The year is 548, and Empress Theodora is dead of disease. Such is the belief of everyone in Constantinople, capital of the Roman Empire - everyone except Emperor Justinian, who orders John, his Lord Chamberlain, to find her murderer or suffer the consequences. There is no sign of foul play, but many of the aristocrats at the imperial court had good reason to want Theodora dead.

Revisado: 08-16-22
While this book claims to contain old Time radio stories of the detective Hercule Poirot, It is also full of contemporary advertisement as well as extraneous, unhelpful commentator drivel. Compare BBC productions of golden age mystery writers this book is a true clunker.

Historia
In 1919 England, in the shadow of The Great War, many look to the spirit world for answers. But it will take an all-too-earthbound intrigue to draw in the discerning heroine of Anna Lee Huber's latest mystery. It's not that Verity Kent doesn't sympathize with those eager to make contact with lost loved ones. After all, she once believed herself a war widow. But now that she's discovered Sidney is very much alive, Verity is having enough trouble connecting with her estranged husband, never mind the dead. Still, at a friend's behest, Verity attends a seance.

Jeeze, edit this book!
Revisado: 05-20-22
But the time I was 3/4 away through this book I began to think that the author really could write if she stuck to the storyline. The very phony upper crust accent of the reader was particularly annoying in the beginning but evened out with her very competent mirroring of other nationalities. My major complaint was the very one dimensional offended macho husband in this troubled marriage. But he was only out done by the tortured muteness of the overwrought wife. Less hand wringing and tighter writing to the plot would make this a vastly improved book.

England, 1919. Verity Kent's grief over the loss of her husband pierces anew when she receives a cryptic letter suggesting her beloved Sidney may have committed treason before his untimely death. Determined to dull her pain with revelry, Verity's first impulse is to dismiss the derogatory claim. But the mystery sender knows too much - including the fact that during the war Verity worked for the Secret Service, something not even Sidney knew.

Interesting era, mediocre writing
Revisado: 03-01-22
The positive abt this review is that the book covers an Interesting era and plot. But, all that is overwhelmed by the negatives: and insufferably fake posh accent at the narrator, some clunkers in terms of medical knowledge within the storyline, some week tweaking of emotional reaction and reasoning to further the plot, and a rather 2 dimensional husband. And okay read if you like mediocre soap operas.

If this were a mystery, it would encapsulate the cozy genre. It has everything: small Scottish town, faithful servants, local characters and a wry observation of the quirks of the human condition. Beautifully broadcast, it is a gem of the BBC storytelling, revealing the events in the life of a idealistic Scottish country doctor.

Not Georgette Heyer!
Revisado: 11-02-21
While this was originally written as a defense against some of the more unbelievable Georgian Romances, the characters are pretty flat and the story obvious. Fortunately for us MC Beaton got it right in her Hamish McBeth and Agatha raisin series later in her life.
