Historia
This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

A Great Package of Fact and Fiction
Revisado: 01-15-20
This is the best intro possible for those interested in the Napoleonic Wars at sea. Great narration adds to the pleasure. Adding Dr. Maturin as the clueless (about war at sea) physician allows O'Brian to give us textures missing from the other solid versions of this story by C.S. Forrester (Captain Hornblower) and Alexander Kent (Captain Bolitho), both of which are fun too.

Old, but good up very well against the new guys, I'm Brian and Kent. Feels much cleaner and more true to the old reality of the hard service.

Historia
They first appear as a series of dots on astronomical plates, heading from Saturn directly toward Earth. Since the ringed planet carries no life, scientists deduce the mysterious ship to be a visitor from another star. The world's frantic efforts to signal the aliens go unanswered. The first contact is hostile: the invaders blast a Soviet space station, seize the survivors, and then destroy every dam and installation on Earth with a hail of asteriods.

Wordy, Wooden and Weak

Good idea, but way too long in development.
and Niven's names, Lord God, his names...!
(Difficult enough to read see e.g. Ringworld and it's progeny) but to listen to on tape-'shoot me before I kill again.'
not worth the time to hear, nor the powder to blow it to Hell. (and I'm a huge Niven fan. Read all the books multiple times, except this one. Gag me.)

This shouldn't have gotten past the editor.
Way too long and sloppy. Atreides, the first volume, is now revealed as the beginning off a slide into mediocrity.

A Brilliant Follow-on to Neuromancer
Revisado: 06-19-19
Great things about reading a Gibson years after it's written is to see just how much he was ahead of the curve as to various technological and social developments. The Internet, got it perfectly right . Cell phones? Totally missed it.
Courtney Liefje the reader, however, is his ability to talk about the technological backdrop of his work without preaching about it too much-it just is , like the beat up Sam crawlers in the first Star Wars movie . No explanation, just pay attention and get with it. Find away my favorite sci-fi writer of the last 30 years

Revisado: 06-16-19
As a lover of the A- M series, it pains me to pan this one.
Necessary to the narrative flow though it may be, in and of itself it's slow going.

Nineteenth Century Hillside Ripper
Revisado: 06-12-19
About the French Revolution in its early phase. Escape from the revolutionary rabble. (Bernie Sanders families need not read.).
Read it long ago in my youth. Loved it. Listened to it this week in periods of insomnia. Less enchanted, but still listened to the end with great pleasure.
Baroness Orkzy writes from the woman's POV, to great effect on a current audience, both positive and negative. A little skewed by 19th C ideas about womanhood, but a great read for young girls and boys, esp if paired with Scaramouche, about the same period in history.

Historia
It is 1819, and Captain Adam Bolitho is ordered once again to Freetown in West Africa with secret orders for the senior officer there. The slave trade has been outlawed by many nations, but a hundred thousand slaves are still shipped out annually, the profit for slavers considered worth the risk of interception by the Royal Navy. For Adam, newly married and as fiery as ever, Africa will bring reunions and unexpected allies, and a treachery that wears the mask of friendship, and threatens the very heart of all he loves.

Insomniac listening to these night after night.

Audible not listing in sequence, and skipping titles, drives me crazy. Ditto inability to read summary after download, to try to figure out sequencing.
O'Brien is better, but these are fun.
