Historia
Southern Afghanistan was slipping away. That was clear to then-Captain Rusty Bradley as he began his third tour of duty there in 2006. The Taliban and their allies were infiltrating everywhere, poised to reclaim Kandahar Province, their strategically vital onetime capital. To stop them, the NATO coalition launched Operation Medusa, the largest offensive in its history. The battlefield was the Panjwayi Valley, a densely packed warren of walled compounds that doubled neatly as enemy bunkers.

Great story bad narrator
Revisado: 08-14-24
Great first hand account of the fight in and around Kandahar. Narrator seemed like he tried to make the worst stereotypical accents for each person.

Good story bad dual narration
Revisado: 01-06-24
Love these books and the usual single narrator. However the dual narration in this one became disjointed and did not seem well planned. The narrator playing Ms Robert’s sounds more like an AI generated Reba McEntire.

Historia
Defense expert Seth Jones argues that the US is woefully unprepared for the future of global competition. While America has focused on building fighter jets, missiles, and conventional warfighting capabilities, its three principal rivals - Russia, Iran, and China - have increasingly adopted irregular warfare: cyber attacks, the use of proxy forces, propaganda, espionage, and disinformation to undermine American power. Jones details the key steps the United States must take to alter how it thinks about - and engages in - competition before it is too late.

Read more like a policy paper with some I throughout. The Long Game and China's Asian Dream are much more thorough and show the progression of Chinese thought and plans

Great but...
Revisado: 11-14-21
Rereading on audiobooks to refresh my memory before the TV Series. Love hearing Michael Kramer but Kate Reading is very one dimensional. When she reads and all characters sound the same, additionally she has the same robotic tempo as in other books in which she narrates. Yearned for Michael Kramer to take back over the narration as characters come alive and allow you to just experience, he is excellent. When Kate read I found myself forgetting who was speaking and not enjoying the story.

eh....ok as a filler until Rothfus, Sullivan...
Revisado: 08-07-21
Got this while waiting for Joe Abercrombie, Patrick Rothfus, and Michael Sullivan's next books. hate writing negative reviews. This book is ...OK. Author borrows liberally from characters, scenes, and themes in the above authors. Also laziness in developing characters, describing the world( just uses modern terms and lingo)....also over explains subtleties that the above authors allow the reader to interpret. You know what Hadrian, Royce, Kvothe, and Logen are thinking as the authors have developed great characters in which you have a deep understanding. Will I get book 3....maybe, if I cannot find another series to read in between, but there is no investment in the story or characters. Saving grace is the narration.

Historia
Roshar is a world of stone and storms. Uncanny tempests of incredible power sweep across the rocky terrain so frequently that they have shaped ecology and civilization alike. Animals hide in shells, trees pull in branches, and grass retracts into the soilless ground. Cities are built only where the topography offers shelter. It has been centuries since the fall of the 10 consecrated orders known as the Knights Radiant, but their Shardblades and Shardplate remain: mystical swords and suits of armor.

struggled to get into it, seemed he went too far out of his way to make up a world and try to be different instead of develop a good story, which made relating hard and interest wanted quickly. wanted to finish it after I was 20 hours in, may continue with next books unless I can find another long epic. and last thing, good narration, but could the narrators get together and agree on how to pronounce names?

not returning for the next book
Revisado: 07-21-16
Very difficult to get into this book. Characters are not believable and their motivations are not realistic. The book jumps around many times trying to explain a decision by making up a history for the character. I was impressed with the narrator and the voices she had to employ. Too bad she did not have a plot to support her.

Historia
Seventeen years ago, a long and bloody rebellion wracked the six united regions of the Kingdom. Now the new King wields the vast and unvanquished army of Midlan with his right hand, and with his left has granted a small group of thugs, the nobles he calls his Sovereign Five, unbridled rule over the other regions. As if this weren't bad enough, the King has also outlawed the practice of whispering - which is a problem for Kael.

Not what I was looking for...
Revisado: 09-23-15
Would you try another book from Shae Ford and/or Derek Perkins?
No. Writing was a bit immature and full of blatantly obvious plots and characters. Perhaps better for a much younger audience.
What was most disappointing about Shae Ford’s story?
I was looking for an Epic read with interesting characters that are detailed and developed throughout the story, sub plots, twists, and that intangible compulsion to be a part of the story and relate to the characters. Nothing. The plot was see through from the beginning and the characters were used to explain everything thoroughly and hit you over the head with each basic standard fantasy theme.
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
Yes. Narrator was great with voices and would have really shined with a better story.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment that I had spent 1 credit.
Any additional comments?
If you are looking for a read to replace Joe Abercrombie, Robin Hobb, Anthony Ryan, George R.R. Martin, Brent Weeks, or Brian McClellan do not stop here. If you want a very young reader's fantasy with the templated fantasy story lines this is it. I will not be spending credits on the next two books as I already know how it will end.
