Historia
During the 17th century, the Netherlands, despite having only 1.5 million people in 1600, became a global maritime and trading power. By contrast, France at the time had 20 million people, Spain had eight million, and England had five million. Nevertheless, Amsterdam became one of the most important urban centers in the world and the location of the world’s first stock market, and Dutch merchant ships and pirates plied the Atlantic Ocean, the Indian Ocean, and the Pacific Ocean.

Historia
As raiders and explorers, the Vikings played a decisive role in the formation of Latin Christendom, and particularly of western Europe. Now, in a series of 36 vivid lectures by an honored teacher and classical scholar, you have the opportunity to understand this remarkable race as never before, studying the Vikings not only as warriors, but in all of the other roles in which they were equally extraordinary - merchants, artists, kings, raiders, seafarers, shipbuilders, and creators of a remarkable literature of myths and sagas.

It's pretty good
Revisado: 03-02-22
Frankly, you should not take the hysterionic reviews seriously. I did quite a bit of higher education, including a B.A. in history in my undergrad and this is exactly what you should expect to find in an undergraduate history course. Maybe they were expecting "dad history?" The delivery is fine. He speaks clearly and isn't yelling. Just a deeply weird review that got pushed up on this.

Historia
There is something profoundly romantic about lost civilizations. Davies peers through the cracks in the mainstream accounts of modern-day states to dazzle us with extraordinary stories of barely remembered pasts, and of the traces they left behind. This is Norman Davies at his best: sweeping narrative history packed with unexpected insights. Vanished Kingdoms will appeal to all fans of unconventional and thought-provoking history, from listeners of Niall Ferguson to Jared Diamond.

Breezy non-history
Revisado: 12-25-21
Author should have written a travel guide since this book is 70% travel guide, 20% poor art review, and 10% history. what a bummer.

Historia
Marcellino D'Ambrosio dusts off what might have been just dry theology to bring you the exciting stories of great heroes such as Ambrose, Augustine, Basil, Athanasius, John Chrysostom, and Jerome. These brilliant, embattled, and sometimes eccentric men defined the biblical canon, hammered out the Creed, and gave us our understanding of sacraments and salvation. It is they who preserved the rich legacy of the early Church for us.

sectarian sermon
Revisado: 05-26-21
If you are looking for a solid history of the early church and it's theological arguments then this isn't it. This is a profoundly dull sermon and the author has a superficial knowledge of Greek and Roman history, but lacks the humility to go crack a book before writing about it anyway.

Historia
In this effortlessly erudite account, Russell Shorto traces the idiosyncratic evolution of Amsterdam, showing how such disparate elements as herring anatomy, naked Anabaptists parading through the streets, and an intimate gathering in a 16th-century wine-tasting room had a profound effect on Dutch - and world - history. Weaving in his own experiences of his adopted home, Shorto provides an ever-surprising, intellectually engaging story of Amsterdam from its golden age to the present.

Personal Essay instead of history
Revisado: 11-08-19
Author is intent on being a writer instead historian and manages to be unengaging at both.
