Wildly Imaginative and Fun
Revisado: 04-18-25
I'm so impressed by this book. The author used his deep knowledge of the Victorian era, including the infamous urban legend called Spring Heeled Jack, and created a smashing alternate history.
The narrator is excellent and perfect for this book. I could easily listen to it all over again. The combination of true Victorian details and extremely fanciful, dystopian Steampunk devices, is outstanding.

Historia
The Little Stranger follows the strange adventures of Dr. Faraday, the son of a maid who has built a life of quiet respectability as a country doctor. One dusty postwar summer in his home of rural Warwickshire, he is called to a patient at Hundreds Hall. Home to the Ayres family for more than two centuries, the Georgian house, once grand and handsome, is now in decline - its masonry crumbling, its gardens choked with weeds, the clock in its stable yard permanently fixed at 20 to nine.

A Thinking Person’s Ghost Story
Revisado: 10-25-23
Beautifully written and masterfully performed by Simon Vance, this historical horror story will stay with you long after the last word fades. The main character, Dr Faraday, begins as a kind and genial narrator, but after the first disaster occurs, he's revealed to be unreliable in his recollection of the strange events at Hundreds Hall. Full of perfect period details, sharp characterizations, and rising dread, I can't recommend this audiobook strongly enough.

Outstanding
Revisado: 12-16-22
A wonderful collection of old-fashioned ghost stories, expertly performed. The selections are varied and the narrator, Simon Stanhope, does the voices and dialects admirably.

I can’t help but say it: just stick with Phillipa Gregory. She isn’t without her sins, but she knows how to tell a story. This is lifeless.

A great beginning
Revisado: 06-09-21
An unusual Victorian story (set in California) brimming with wonderful historical details. Riot and his associates do plenty of Sherlock Holmes-style deductions as they unpick a knotty mystery. Heading straight for book #2!

Historia
English magicians were once the wonder of the known world, with fairy servants at their beck and call; they could command winds, mountains, and woods. But by the early 1800s they have long since lost the ability to perform magic. They can only write long, dull papers about it, while fairy servants are nothing but a fading memory.

Wonderfully Performed
Revisado: 08-07-18
This is a terrific book, performed and enhanced by the skilled narrator, Simon Prebble. A joy to listen to. I first watched the BBC program on Netflix and found the book greatly expanded and deepened the story.
