Julie Andrews has a way with words, humor and telling stories, in addition to her singing and acting skills. Lots of detail, emotions and episodes of her life makes for an interesting listen. Her sensitivity and sense of humor shine throughout this work and professional life chronology. One of the best memoirs I've read. Makes you want to hear the rest of the story.

I enjoyed this audiobook, especially since I was a nursing student in America in the late 1970's and am an Anglophile. This was a well written story, partly very funny; partly sad, but always true to reality regarding the nursing profession from my perspective. I noted similarities and vast differences in my own experiences as I listened to her antics and stories about her student years and beyond. Interestingly, the author relates all that is noble in nursing to the NHS and fails to do the same regarding poor working conditions and low pay, both of which dismayed the young nurse upon entering the profession. I’m not sure why she felt the need to malign the historical viewpoint, still shared by many, that nursing is a calling or vocation, but she did. Despite these facts, I would buy another of her books should she write again.

Delia Owens wrote a thoughtful story with enticing elements and I wanted to hear the ending early on in the book. The major theme of a young (6 year old) girl who raises herself (and publishes books!) after everyone in her family abandons her, is not believable in my opinion, and this interfered with my enjoyment of the excellent writing. Not one person in her world took responsibility for her being alone over the next 20 years? Unlikely. Still, I enjoyed the informative nature descriptions and the well written ending. I would buy another of the author's books.

I could not listen to a sample before buying this book--the site wasn't working properly. Wish I had! The reader doesn't always use proper inflection and rhythm in her performance, and it distracted me from listening to the storyline. Also, the story moves very very slowly, and I found myself yelling at the ipod to hurry up and get to the point. Finally, it seems the author was encouraged to write a very PC story while plugging Ebay and Amazon, which bugged me. I suggest finding a different story.

Refreshing Honesty

This was a great audio book read by the author. Sometimes these fall short and would be better read by another reader, but in this case, Sarah Palin adds credibility to the words. She is so sincere in her reading, which makes it feel like she is having a direct conversation with each listener. Sarah is open and honest and comes across as an above average person living an average American family life by choice. She lives her convictions, which is rare today.

Loved every minute of this one!

There is nothing negative to report on this book, and much to enjoy. I can't wait to hear another story from this author. Honest telling of the 1960s from both sides: the white employers and black maids who spoke out through an aspiring author as the main character. I loved each of the 4 narrators, and thought they were cast perfectly in their respective roles. I hope there is a sequel!

Disappointing

I couldn't even finish this book. The narration was annoying with an overdone Irish accent and I found the story to be wanting. The main character seemed to find every stupid thing she did while on drugs to be hysterically funny, but I didn't get the humor it the storylines or in the telling of the story.

Interesting storyline

This was an interesting storyline and overall I enjoyed it. However, Audible ought to have a rating system for language, to forewarn about the excessive use of swearing. One character in particular swore like a sailor, and it was disturbing to me. In written form, you can gloss over things like that, but in audio you can't escape the effect, and neither can anyone in the room with you.

Compelling Story

This was a well thought out story about an ethical and moral dilemma. I liked how the characters each spoke from their own perspectives. The end was surprising, not the one I anticipated, which was good since it kept me interested to the last sentence. I didn't care for the unnecessary references to the gay lifestyle (no reason in the story line - it was contrived.) And the author could do better to avoid harsh language - it didn't improve the product but did make it uncomfortable to listen with my teenage daughter even though the story appealed to both of us, which is rare. Overall it was a story that made me think about it between listening sessions, and made a 15 hour car trip seem much shorter.
