Historia
Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

Loved the narrator, story is compelling, and informative. Really enjoyed learning about this slice of American history and Martha Ballard’s contributions.

Historia
There is a voice of longing inside each woman. We strive so mightily to be good: good partners, daughters, mothers, employees, and friends. We hope all this striving will make us feel alive. Instead, it leaves us feeling weary, stuck, overwhelmed, and underwhelmed. We look at our lives and wonder: Wasn’t it all supposed to be more beautiful than this? We quickly silence that question, telling ourselves to be grateful, hiding our discontent—even from ourselves.

I love it when a book expands my understanding in some way. This one does so with a number of different topics. I’m excited to listen to it again!

Best book I’ve read in a longtime. Unique perspective on life, love, and time. Unpredictable until the end.

Friends, Daughters, Mothers, and Food
Revisado: 01-31-15
Thought provoking, frustrating, and disturbing at times. As a daughter, I came away from this book really appreciating the balance my own mother provided me. As a mother of a young girl, I'm challenged to review my relationship with her and how food is presented and discussed. Narration was really good, but I didn't walk away from this book relating to any characters. I guess that's a good thing for me.
