Historia
Casey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress trying to escape a streak of bad press, has retreated to the peace and quiet of her family’s lake house in Vermont. Armed with a pair of binoculars and several bottles of bourbon, she passes the time watching Tom and Katherine Royce, the glamorous couple living in the house across the lake. They make for good viewing—a tech innovator, Tom is powerful; and a former model, Katherine is gorgeous.

Good story, poor narrator
Revisado: 09-29-24
When the story is a first person narrative, the voice should match the character. Casey is in her 30’s, but the narrator sounds much older. Also she read in a very strange and distracting cadence, and she didn’t vary the characters’ voices at all. It really took away from my enjoyment of the book. I wish I had sampled the narration before I purchased it or at least read the reviews.

Historia
Someone's out to get Los Angeles bookseller Adrien English. His best friend has been viciously murdered, now he's getting weird phone calls and sinister gifts from a mysterious "admirer." The cops think he's trying to divert suspicion from himself - with the exception of sexy and homophobic homicide detective Jake Riordan. Is Riordan really such a great detective - or does he have a few secrets of his own? Is his offer to help Adrien on the level or is he out to nail his favorite suspect - to the wall?

One of my favorite series.
Revisado: 06-03-23
I love Josh Lanyon, and Adrien English is my favorite series. Chris Patton is a lovely narrator. The characters are easily distinguished and he really catches Adrien’s sarcasm and humor. This is a fun series and I’ve read it a few times.
I saw a couple reviews call it homophobic, but it’s not the book that’s homophobic, but a few characters that are. Adrien deals with them the same way he deals with everything: stubbornness, sarcasm and humor. This series makes you laugh, cry and growl in frustration.
I love Adrien with an E.

I loved this book. It made me laugh, cry and growl in frustration. I’ve enjoyed many of this author’s works. I love her writing style. The narrators were both excellent, conveying emotion convincingly and making the characters all clearly different.

Historia
A former foster kid, Jane has led a solitary life as a waitress in the suburbs, working hard to get by. After graduating, Jane accepts a job offer at a distinguished law firm in downtown Toronto. Everyone at the firm thinks she is destined for failure because her boss is the notoriously difficult Edward Rosen. But Jane has known far worse trials and refuses to back down. Edward has never been able to keep an assistant—he’s too loud, too messy, too ill-tempered. Yet there’s something about Jane that intrigues him. As their orbits overlap, their feelings begin to develop.

Good plot, okay performance
Revisado: 04-04-23
The story itself is pretty good. I’m not quite sure if it’s the narrator or the text, but it sometimes sounds emotionless. It almost feels as though Jane is dead inside. I mean, she had a hard life, but the strong emotion on which the original is based seems absent. It’s otherwise we’ll written. She does have a very relaxing voice though.

Nora Stephens' life is books—she’s read them all—and she is not that type of heroine. Not the plucky one, not the laidback dream girl, and especially not the sweetheart. In fact, the only people Nora is a heroine for are her clients, for whom she lands enormous deals as a cutthroat literary agent, and her beloved little sister Libby.

I loved it!
Revisado: 10-28-22
It’s funny how so many people can read the same book and have such vastly different reactions. I enjoy the author’s writing style and sense of humor.
I’m a fan of several genres, so I don’t always read romance. If you’re looking for deep and meaningful, this probably isn’t it, nor do I think it’s intended to be. It has fun moments and moments of seriousness.
The main character, Nora, is not a perfect romantic heroine, nor is Charlie a stereotypical hero. They’re flawed, funny and, of course, made for each other. But I don’t like my main characters to be perfect.
It just depends what you want in a romance. For me, the author’s witty writing style is spot on.

Nothing good ever comes from drinking a box of wine alone. So when I decided to entertain my drunken self by setting up some hand-me-down podcasting equipment and reading the steamy parts from romance novels, I never thought anyone would actually listen. The fact that I admitted my huge crush on my sexy next door neighbor made the whole thing even more mortifying. But sometimes life surprises you, and that’s how my podcast, Heidi’s Discount Erotica, was born. Now I, Heidi Larsen, a sweet former kindergarten teacher in Waconia, Minnesota, lead a scandalous double life.

Loved it!
Revisado: 10-05-22
I have a friend from Minnesota and this was hilarious. I actually know people who talk like this. It was hilarious. I loved all the characters, especially her parents. This was such a fun story of self discovery. Even though I loved the ending I was sad to see it.
Also, Andi is one of my favorite narrators. A narrator can ruin a great book or make a mediocre book better. She always makes a book great. That she had a hand in writing this just makes it better.

Not at all accurate to the original and poor sound quality
Revisado: 08-17-22
First of all, Dom and Billy are as amazing in this as everything else. They do a great job.
I didn’t make it to the end. I’m a fan of the original books. For one thing, Sherlock would never pass up a chance to show up the police, especially in a foul mood. He loves to prove his genius. He would never proclaim someone guilty based on a letter and the police’s crime scene analysis. He wouldn’t trust them. Also, why would they enlist the help of someone like that?
So unless you want a totally different story that reverses the story in a way the barely resembles the original, you probably won’t enjoy this. If you’re willing to listen to it as something unrelated to the original, you may like it.
Beware, it does a lot of jumping back and forth in time, which some find hard to follow with audio. Also, the sound gets very tinny. I don’t know whether or not it’s intentional. The sound effects did add to the story. It felt like an old radio program.

Why?
Revisado: 07-09-22
I wanted to read the book, because I found the movie meaningful. Usually the book is so much better. I can’t figure out why someone made this into a movie. The narrator was great, but the story was like Cliff notes. It really read like a summary of a better story. The grammar wasn’t that great either, but I feel like that was intentional. I was left unsatisfied with the story. I had a teacher tell me once, “Show, don’t tell.” Each scene would give a little information, then suddenly we’re jumping to another scene.

Surprising
Revisado: 04-24-22
The title was a little misleading. This was a lot better than your average beach read. There was a depth of feeling and meaning that I didn’t expect. I liked the characters. They seemed very real and three dimensional. I became invested very quickly and I loved this.
I also loved the narrator. A good narrator is important.

Revisado: 04-21-22
Let’s be honest. I would listen to Richard Armitage read a dictionary. Of course he was amazing. The story was well written and it built up to better pace, but I’m not entirely sure the narrator didn’t affect the quality of the story. I did enjoy this audiobook, either way. Some people just have a voice for reading. And Joy Ellis writes an intense mystery.
