Another fine story by Kristen with one caveat!

Another outstanding story in the continuing Green Rider saga and Karigan G'ladheon’s adventures across Sacoridia. The relationship between Karigan and King Zachary continues to develop while war with Second Empire begins and other conflicts are unleashed. The story ends on a cliffhanger. My caveat to new reader/listeners of Kristen Britain, is that she must be the modern world’s slowest published author. Count on your listening devise, ebook reader, or actual book gathering dust before the next book is published!

Read this AFTER “Her Scandalous Pursuit”

This should be the second book in the series. “Her Scandalous Pursuit” details Thisbe’s and Desmond’s story. In “Mesmerized” they are already married and it’s about 7 years later.

Who says this is the end?

So, who says this is the end of the series? I just finished The Voice of Life, Book 4, and there are all kinds of plot threads left dangling. What happens when Elena is introduced to the Royal Court as Lucas’ Betrothed? She is singularly unprepared to swim among that school of piranhas. Then there is all the upheaval that change brings to the kingdom. Among the the Common Born there will be “haves” and “have nots,” those whose life force is blocked and are allowed to learn to read and write, and those who can’t because there aren’t enough Mages willing to make the sacrifice of blocking their own power. No cause for resentment there! And speaking of Mages, where do think a disproportionate number of those required to be blocked will come from? Wealth and power has its privileges, so its the lesser Houses who will be pressured more. Resentment much there, too? Peace has a price, too. All those veterans of the war come flooding home, looking for work, what will that do to the kingdom’s economy? It seems to me it will take somebody like the Spoken Mage who has entree and social cachet at all levels to navigate this minefield!

2016 Hugo Award Nominee

I highly recommend this story. Naomi Novik is the author of the Temeraire: League of Dragons series. This novel is a separate standalone story and, as the title indicates, it is a 2016 Hugo Award nominee. The setting is Eastern European folklore reminiscent of C.J. Cherryh’s Rusalka. Other reviewers have commented on the narrator's accent as a negative. I found her accent contributed to the story and I had no trouble understanding her in most ways. I did, however, find her constant mispronunciations of words like "paused" a minor irritant.

I really enjoyed this series by Katherine Kurtz. I hope that the later books will also soon be available in audiobook format.
