Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Really struggled with this one
Revisado: 03-02-24
I found the narration really difficult to understand and it really prevented me from getting engaged in the story. I understand the intent of having a narrator like this, giving the listener an almost first hand account feel of the story, but it was just tough for me personally. I largely purchased this book because of reading empire of pain.

Aged Like Milk
Revisado: 11-26-23
In a post COVID world this is not the book that will improve lives. Viewpoints are already dated and borderline cringe corporate propaganda. Let's stop idolizing corporate executives as all knowing masterminds and show them for who they are, human beings with fragile egos and positions of privilege that they were able to leverage to their personal benefit. There are, however, small nuggets of wisdom which are widely dispersed through name-dropping to substantiate the product and the marketing of additional products. This book is the quintessential regurgitation of hack, hustle, and new age master your mind propaganda that corporate executives love to push. After all if you BELIEVE your contribution to the corporate entity is valuable because it's vision statement resonates with you then you will work harder and be more productive, and essentially buy in to everything their selling you. Nevermind if the vision statement itself is a complete force. This is psychology, and those at the top know more about how to motivate the masses than the masses themselves. Honestly, I recommend starting there. Elephant in the Brain provides an excellent demonstration of how individuals, and collective groups decieve themselves, and why our minds are structured to do so. Self awareness is the first step, of many, in self transformation. Not this book, and definitely not an expensive subscription to this product

Good people in good marriages are having affairs. The workplace and the Internet have become fertile breeding grounds for “friendships” that can slowly and insidiously turn into love affairs. Yet you can protect your relationship from emotional or sexual betrayal by recognizing the red flags that mark the stages of slipping into an improper, dangerous intimacy that can threaten your marriage.

A Good Book You'll Wish You Didn't Have to Read
Revisado: 06-06-22
I suspect if you're reading this book, you're likely in the aftermath of an affair that has rocked your marriage. While the book touches on all the different types of affairs and who gets involved in them the meat of the book is on affairs that start as friendships and turn into both emotional and physical affairs. These combined affairs are particularly destructive to the primary relationship, and have become more common as women achieve greater equality in society. If you're the betrayed spouse listening at times can be very painful, as you can easily imagine your wandering spouse going down the road Dr. Glass describes in the book. The only knock on the book is that it's nearly 20 years old and could use an update based on new trends and the role technology plays in affairs. Most of the advice is timeless though. A great read, but I really wish I wasn't compelled to read it...

Prof. Hamburg Randomly Picked Topics
- De Bob Savage en 11-15-14
Good broad overview but needs several updates
Revisado: 01-30-22
3.5 Stars. Nobody listening to this course can accuse it of lacking in brevity. Indeed 12 hours is a bit too little time to be paid to the seven decades of Soviet history. Several topics such as the Cuban missile crisis, Chernobyl, the crushing of the 1956 Hungarian Uprising are either omitted or just so briefly touched on, that this course could use another 6 or 8 hours to cover those and other topics as listed below. This course was recorded in the 90s and it shows. There's a bit too much "great men" focus on not nearly enough on the mood or effects on the larger society. You'll notice this especially at the end of the course which rightfully focuses heavily on Gorbachev and his reforms, but really doesn't spend nearly enough time in talking about how everyday people lost faith in Soviet way of life.

In 1558 the ancient stones of Kingsbridge Cathedral look down on a city torn apart by religious conflict. As power in England shifts precariously between Catholics and Protestants, high principles clash bloodily with friendship, loyalty, and love. Ned Willard wants nothing more than to marry Margery Fitzgerald. But when the lovers find themselves on opposing sides of the religious divide sweeping across the country, Ned goes to work for Princess Elizabeth. When she becomes queen, all Europe turns against England.

Excellent addition to the Kingsbridge series
Revisado: 02-02-20
While I loved both Pillars of the Earth and World without End, I was unsure if I would find this book all that enjoyable due to the time period it was set in. I remember vaguely from high school and college the reformation and Elizabethan periods, but they failed the capture my imagination the way the medieval period did at the time. Follett really brought this period to life for me and kept me glued to my headphones.
Follett always masterfully weaves his characters into real historical events, and this was no different, and maybe even better than other two books since so much takes place outside of Kingsbridge.

Who understood the risk inherent in the assumption of ever-rising real-estate prices, a risk compounded daily by the creation of those arcane, artificial securities loosely based on piles of doubtful mortgages? Michael Lewis turns the inquiry on its head to create a fresh, character-driven narrative brimming with indignation and dark humor, a fitting sequel to his number-one best-selling Liar’s Poker.
