Historia
"No killing Goblins." So reads the sign outside of The Wandering Inn, a small building run by a young woman named Erin Solstice. She serves pasta with sausage, blue fruit juice, and dead acid flies on request. And she comes from another world. Ours. It's a bad day when Erin finds herself transported to a fantastical world and nearly gets eaten by a Dragon. She doesn't belong in a place where monster attacks are a fact of life, and where Humans are one species among many. But she must adapt to her new life. Or die.

I loved the characters, world building, magic structure.. the parallels and divisions from our world to this were perfect. 10/10 if you want a Harry Potter meets Lord of the Rings and today’s pop culture adventure.

Bryony and her sisters have come down in the world. Their merchant father died trying to reclaim his fortune and left them to eke out a living in a village far from their home in the city. But when Bryony is caught in a snowstorm and takes refuge in an abandoned manor, she stumbles into a house full of dark enchantments. Is the Beast that lives there her captor or a fellow prisoner? Is the house her enemy or her ally? And why are roses blooming out of season in the courtyard?

I loved the thought put into this book-the characters, the curse… all were so well thought out and much more realistic than the Disney version of this tale, which was my childhood favorite.

Notes from the author: The following is a short story I wrote in the Elantris world back in January of 2006. There were always a few holes in Elantris where I decided not to include viewpoints or sections of explanation in the name of streamlining, particularly at the end. In the back of my mind, I knew what happened. This story talks about one of those holes; it is meant to be heard after you’ve finished the novel and takes place during the events of the climax.

I loved hearing more of the Elantra story (this was like a blip though compared to most Sanderson works) but some voices are too soft compared to others so it was a little harder to hear than a typical audiobook.

Revisado: 03-20-25
This book has such great detail that I can see it in my mind’s eye as if it were a movie. It has a bunch of action and well threaded story lines. You have to read the first book before you read this one so it makes the most sense. I can’t wait to read book 1.5 now that I know it exists, and I sincerely hope there are more books added to this series!!

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

One man, two equally hard but very different phases of life. I am glad I experienced this book, and would recommend others do the same, but it doesn’t make my “must re-read” or “loved it” lists.

Historia
The irascible A. J. Fikry, owner of Island Books - the only bookstore on Alice Island - has already lost his wife. Now his most prized possession, a rare book, has been stolen from right under his nose in the most embarrassing of circumstances. The store itself, it seems, will be next to go. One night upon closing, he discovers a toddler in his children’s section with a note from her mother pinned to her Elmo doll: I want Maya to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about such kinds of things. I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her.

A great read about the downs of life that will make you cherish the ups
Revisado: 03-13-25
My great aunt who recently lost her husband of 50+ years said she read this book in her book club so I was surprised that the book dealt so much with death, but through it all, this is a story about life. A true celebration of literature and life, if ever I have read one. This is a book for when you want to appreciate literature and the joy it brings to others. This is a book-lovers’ book.

Historia
In this groundbreaking work, evolutionary biologist Jared Diamond stunningly dismantles racially based theories of human history by revealing the environmental factors actually responsible for history's broadest patterns. It is a story that spans 13,000 years of human history, beginning when Stone Age hunter-gatherers constituted the entire human population. Guns, Germs, and Steel is a world history that really is a history of all the world's peoples, a unified narrative of human life.

I found the information book to be interesting, but I admit it made me drowsy more than once. It took several sittings for me to make it through the whole book. Typically, I can knock out a book this long in one sitting. Great to read if you’re having trouble sleeping. I would definitely consider this a textbook, perfect for an academic setting.
