Historia
It’s a signal paradox of our times that we live in an information society but do not know how it works. And without understanding how our information is stored, used, and protected, we are vulnerable to having it exploited. In Fancy Bear Goes Phishing, Scott J. Shapiro draws on his popular Yale University class about hacking to expose the secrets of the digital age. With lucidity and wit, he establishes that cybercrime has less to do with defective programming than with the faulty wiring of our psyches and society.

Exceptional exploration of modern day hams and their perpetrators
Revisado: 02-15-24
It is rare to find a book written by a university law professor that is both engaging and informative. This one is exceptionally clear and deals with the number of complex issues, as well as their real world reflections in popular society. It is definitely recommended reading for anyone interested in cyber security and modern day technological evolution on social media. The discussion of the difference between upcode and down code is also very elucidating. The clear distinction made between hacking and cyber warfare is also very helpful to an understanding of of why interference in a state’s politics is not an act of war. Enjoy!

Historia
You may be surprised to learn that microchips are the new oil—the scarce resource on which the modern world depends. Today, military, economic, and geopolitical power are built on a foundation of computer chips. Virtually everything—from missiles to microwaves—runs on chips, including cars, smartphones, the stock market, even the electric grid. Until recently, America designed and built the fastest chips and maintained its lead as the #1 superpower, but America’s edge is in danger of slipping, undermined by players in Taiwan, Korea, and Europe taking over manufacturing.

Excellent Overview of the History of the Development of Semiconductors and their key role in the post-industrial world.
Revisado: 02-16-23
Required reading for everyone concerned about the US-China relationship and the role of semiconductor dependency on Taiwan in preventing a confrontation. The first 2/3 of the book provides a against history of the development of semi conductors and their core role in the modern world, a story told in more detail elsewhere.

Historia
In The Accursed Tower, Roger Crowley delivers a lively narrative of the lead-up to the siege and a vivid, blow-by-blow account of the climactic battle. Drawing on extant Arabic sources as well as untranslated Latin documents, he argues that Acre is notable for technical advances in military planning and siege warfare, and extraordinary for its individual heroism and savage slaughter. A gripping depiction of the crusader era told through its dramatic last moments, The Accursed Tower offers an essential new view on a crucial turning point in world history.

This book provides an excellent historical record of the end of the Latin kingdoms in the Levant including vivid characterization of the principal combatants in the fall of Accra in the late 14th century. The presentation is very evenhanded.

The Other Side of History
Revisado: 02-22-20
There are only a few professors in the Great Courses that I would love to meet and quiz. Robert Garland is one of these. He delivers these lectures with such insight, compassion and perspectives that it is really hard to tear yourself away from listening. Even after 24 hours, you want more. I only wish he had included other locations in the Ancient World like China, Japan, India and Central Asia (its understandable why these are excluded as he is a Classics Professor after all).
I guarantee you will enjoy this course and it gives you real insight into what life was like among our ancestors during the rise of civilization. Very cool topic.
