Disappointing story couldn't finish

I own every one of LE Modesitt Jr.'s audiobooks from the Recluse series and love them; however, as much as I really tried to finish this one, I just got bored and lost interest in the story.
I am sorry even to write this, but I think this author is awesome and will continue to follow.

Charming story and wonderful to listen to.

Michael Miller is now an author I will be watching for. He has a very good grasp of how to tell a story that keeps the listener waiting for the next chapter. The plot was entertaining, and I bought the second book immediately upon listening to this one.

My First Review after 2000 Audio Books

I was captivated by the first chapter and found I did not want to turn it off to go to sleep. I just kept playing the story.
I have always liked the Academy theme sci-fi books, but this one has twist after twist, and I couldn't wait to hear what was going to happen next. I liked the main character and how he thought out his challenges and mostly avoided potential problems.
The writing by Brian Nordon was excellent, and the narration is perfect. I am 15 chapters into this and hate to have to go to work.
I will look for anything new this author brings us.

I miss the cleaver writing and the fun characters

Wish I liked the main characters in this book more.
I had to buy the kindle book just to speed read the last half of the book which lost my attention with all the endless detail of inner turmoil each character in the book felt we needed to know before any action was taken.
I loved the part in the book where the king was give an jeweled egg as a gift, and the first few chapters of the prince in the jungle.
I just think when you have lived over 800 years, like the prince had, that you would be slightly smarter and not have had such a "nothing" life. And the argument of why that would not be so did not hold up for me.
I will not be buying the next 2 releases of this series which I am sorry about because I have loved so many other books by this author.
I have in my audible library hundreds of book purchased over the last 5 yrs. This is the first time I have felt the need to review a book with so few positive things to say about it.

New twist on a familial story

What made the experience of listening to Cast Under an Alien Sun the most enjoyable?

The author has a lot of actual scientific knowledge,as well as earth history, which makes the story so much more believable and entertaining.
He describes a man named Joe, from our time being placed on an alien world but in a time period similar to the 1700s on earth. Joe's ability to bring technology to this group of peaceful island dwelling farmers is limited to materials available or known to the alien residents whose ancestors came from earth thousands of years ago..
The story is captivating as he discovers what can actually be produced to enhance their lives and perhaps used to defend his new friends against an aggressive race from across the sea set on their destruction. .
I really enjoyed listening to the detailed descriptions of what it might take to make things we take for granted in todays world.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Cast Under an Alien Sun?

After a mid air plane explosion, Joe finds himself on an alien space craft for an extended period of time talking to an AI who will determine his future. These interchanges were very thought provoking and interesting.

Have you listened to any of Jonathan Davis’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I did want to listen to this book all in one sitting. But instead have been listening to it on a long car journey from Texas to Ohio and back over several days.

Any additional comments?

Was disappointed that the other 2 books in the series are not on audible. I bought the kindle versions of the last 2 so I could finish the story.

I would have had it less about a Romeo and Juliet story, and more of the contrast of the world all this happens on

I would not think it was the same author

Was The Dragons of Dorcastle worth the listening time?

Really might find some fans with the teen audience

A story for a younger audience

What did you like best about Jaunten? What did you like least?

I liked the narration but did found the story very simple with a bland plot. Kids might like it though.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

I liked the horse Night who could talk, but found the constant complaining of the young colt, was overdone. The entire scene of feeding and caring for the baby Night seemed silly The constant references to remember to thank his mother for being a great mom and the on going inner dialog about how hard it was to put up with the brat colt was tiresome. .

Which character – as performed by Mark McClain Wilson – was your favorite?

He did a great job with the taking Nightmare creature.

Could you see Jaunten being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

The plot was so thin, I don't see it as a movie.

this story seemed like a poor copy of the great work, of L. E. Modesitt Jr. and his seven book series which I love.
I did like the book King Slayer, by this author, and wished that this book had been a sequel to that story.

Very well thought out story

Would you listen to Dark Eden again? Why?

No, because I rarely listen to novels twice. Self help book several times.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jeff. Jeff was always asking the right questions, even if his group had no idea of what he was talking about. He saw animals not just as food, but as having personal lives of their own, with interests and purpose.

What about the narrators’s performance did you like?

It was a lot like listening to a play with all the different voices. Very interesting and gave the story an extra dimensions.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I could not put it down but listened to it in about two days time. This was so unusual that could not wait to see what would happen next. There is a bit in all of us that wonders what is on the other side of the mountain....this story took that idea to a new level. I hope there will be a second book to continue the journey.

Any additional comments?

All the characters were very believable as we heard the personal thoughts of each one, and saw the world from their unique perspective. The dialog was coherent with the type of language that might have evolved if no one corrected it for a few hundred years. In addition I loved the kids made up slang, which was fun and believable.

You are going to LOVE It!

What made the experience of listening to The Lies of Locke Lamora the most enjoyable?

I like stories where we see the main character develop from childhood. The back story was terrific and painted a unique picture of a world that may have been a bit earth, like but was mysterious and magical. I was entranced and enjoyed every hour of this book. I I found myself getting emotionally involved in the outcome of Lock and his gang of outrageous thieves,laughing at their cleaver antics and cheering for their victories.

What did you like best about this story?

Here was a Fantasy story that surprised and delighted me at every turn, had me laughing out loud, or waiting in nervous anticipation of how Lock would untangle himself from the most terrible of situations." I loved the verbal dance of insults between characters too.

What about Michael Page’s performance did you like?

He has a lovely voice to listen to. I liked his accents and all the different voices he could make. He was perfect for this book.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

yes, but it is long so I had it on my i pad in the car, in addition to playing it during the day when I was working on the computer or around the house. If there was a free moment I had it playing and then immediately bought the sequel to keep the story going..

I hope the author Scott Lynch writes more books. He is a great talent. I don't bother doing a lot of reviews but wanted to shout from the rooftops that this is a fantastic book.

Best book SF book of 2013 so far

Would you listen to Written in Red again? Why?

No, because I have a great memory and never listen to any book twice.
But I would give it as gift......

What other book might you compare Written in Red to and why?

While its in the vampire and werewolf catagory, I think it stands alone. The author has crafted a unique world that has devided humans from "the others", and where humans are part of the food chain,barely tolerated as cleaver monkeys. It just keeps getting more twisted and better and better.

What about Alexandra Harris’s performance did you like?

She seemed to catch the feelings of the characters and bring you into the excitement of the story easily. She was perfect for this story. There is a warmth in her voice I really liked listening too.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It did make me laugh, and I found myself being very upset when the main character, Meg was injured or in peril.

Any additional comments?

I have read a lot of vampire stories, but this book is very unique. I loved it and hope the author makes it into a series. Based on this book I have gone back and bought her Blood Queen series, Heir to Shadows, but so far it has left me flat.
