Where is the typical John Scalzi humor. Dark defective isnt really your thing mate. The plot didnt even make sense. The fantasy element the added that reality twist does not really affect the effectiveness of the "techniques" you mention at all..

The narrator was meh. Barely any distinct voices in dialog and quite monotone.

I kept waiting for stuff to happen. It did not.
Even the grammar sucked.
Poor penmanship.
I will be returning this title.

This is about my 131st fantasy listen here on audible. Many of which were litrpg. I recommend Brandon Sanderson's work. This book series pales in comparison and actually even ales all on its own just fine..

This series "peaks" in book two. The main storyline is mostly absent in book one, which reads as a loosely affiliated string of events used to set up a needlessly convoluted and bureaucratic magic system. The monsters are often completely random with no connection to the storyline and in many cases even the connection to their spawning environment is flimsy at best.
The characters are dimwitted and shallow woth no real arc to build them up nor any solid connection to the world.
The writer tries to use some fancy words here and there to cover up the lack of sophistication, which only really pisses me off.

The narrator is decent. Solid character voices but not spectacularly rich. The Irish accent works well enough. the rest decent but bland. he has trouble with annunciation and what is the word for knowing where to accent a word? That thing.
English is not my native language but I wrote better then this.

Will be exchanging all three titles.

Having listened to all previous Hank books it took me a while to get over my dissapointment at meeting a different narrator. The previous guy was brilliantly unique and had me waking up the wife in bed at night unable to contain my laughter. Yet after a chapter or two I realised that Gabrielle was spot on with character voices and inflection and totally captures Stevens gritty wit and absurd nihalism. The best part was that to me she sounded like she was picked up in some bar a week before the book reading for audible and never bothered to sober up. The slight drunken slur in her voice barely masked, perfectly authenticates her as the right voice for this golden toilet roll of a book.

I will leave it up to you, obscure review reader to navigate potential sarcasm in my words and judge my review favorable or not.

This work is superior in its quality on all fronts. I expected brilliance coupling the grand master writer Brandon Sanderson with a team of master narrators, yet this production emerged into something far greater then my expectations. I can not wait to listen to the rest of the series.

The writing is both free and sublime in structure. Bending cliches into humorous plot twists that mess with the readers head in a way previous writers have only attempted and failed at. It is truly the first time I have seen meta writing shine. I blame Sanderson's quirky sense of humor for making this taboo work.

The narrators are top notch. Their voices both interesting and well trained. To say the characters are distinct would be a severe understatement. They litteraly all have their own voice actor. The most amazing thing about this is that they are all solid professionals who understand things like inflection, tone, tèmbre, annunciations and accents. The stage play like format used makes the story come alive in a way no other team of narrators has done so far. Well not as well anyway. I enjoyed not having to listen to all the "she says" and he said" additives that are often so superfluous when using character voices in narration. It made the story flow in a much more actionable way.

Special mention for the music and sound effects. I have seen these aspects ruin an otherwise well produced piece often enough. No such violation here. These people went for tried and tested musical themes and instruments. No awkward experiments. My ears recognised what the music was trying to add to the scene without effort or distraction. Let that be a lesson: it is not about you, effect abd music people, you are in service to tge scene! Props to this team of sound engineers.
The volume was adequate. A bit much in the higher pitch which made the sound effects and certain instruments somewhat sharp here and there but adjusting the volume down just a bit took care of that. I think the music and effects might have been mastered more for heavier speakers then in ear headphones. Something to look into perhaps.

Have I said Brandon Sanderson is a grand master?
May you live long and bring us plenty more of what is still floating around in that beautiful brain of yours. And thank you for this work.

Because that is what we all want right? Especially when we are looking for a cool superhero story. To escape the drudgery of your day job, there is nothibg like a good book about.. your dull day job.

Damn Drew, how did you ever think this was a good idea? Write what you know. Sure. Yet write what you know and love mainly, not what you hate. Or destroy what you hate in the book. That is acceptable. Unless you are the only haman alive who enjoys middle management. Then there is just nothing more to say.

I felt like the writer was tired and reaching for something that never quite came. Where is book 2 the characters felt alive and actively developing, the main protagonists here felt flat and static. I had difficulty getting involved.

Also waaaay too many varrients on the same thing. Yes there are shifters and wearwolves and whatnot other subraces and so on but does it really make the story better to all give them their own angles and plot twists? The whole thing jut lost cohesion like that.

I did like the way the combat and different magics and class features were described. If you are a roleplayer there is some inspiration there even though not all of it is raw or even makes sense. And the narration was excellent once more. Much better then the 'rum' girl from the spinnoff form book 2.

All in all not worth my time. Will be returning the book.

liqor diluted with juice does not burn duuuuuh, Only stuff 60 percent up burns so even if the booze was 100 percent youd have to have less then 40 percent juice mixed in. Something no selfrespecting cheap barman swindler would ever do!

Dont shut your players down. You do that too often.
