Hauntingly brilliant
Revisado: 06-19-23
I don't know where to start with this book or how to describe it in a way that does it justice. Despite the horrors described in brutal detail it was unputdownable. A lot of the chapters start with the phrase "every negro walk in a circle," and as it was for me as the reader. I found myself walking in circles emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, and mentally. Each character is so profoundly complex that it was hard to find a binary feeling for them, which is often so easy in literature. Do I like or hate them? The book details just how grotesque and complex slavery affected the psyche of everyone involved: slave and master.

Historia
Set on the outskirts of Umuahia, Nigeria, and narrated by a chi, or guardian spirit, An Orchestra of Minorities tells the story of Chinonso, a young poultry farmer whose soul is ignited when he sees a woman attempting to jump from a highway bridge. Horrified by her recklessness, Chinonso joins her on the roadside and hurls two of his prized chickens into the water below to express the severity of such a fall. The woman, Ndali, is stopped her in her tracks. Bonded by this night on the bridge, Chinonso and Ndali fall in love.

A somewhat frustrating tragedy to read
Revisado: 04-09-23
I know it's meant to be a tragedy so I'm okay with a character's demise. In my opinion the author had really powerful techniques available, such as Igbo cosmology and a narrator that can experience beyond the protagonist. However, he failed to use them effectively, and in the end created a character with a truly frustrating narrative to follow. Many of the images just didn't have the same lucidity as other major Nigerian authors.

Historia
Pacifique Irankunda’s childhood in Burundi was marked by a 13-year civil war - a grueling struggle that destroyed his home, upended his family, and devastated his country’s beautiful culture. As young boys, Paci and his brother slept in the woods on nights when the shooting and violence grew too intense; they hid in tall grass and watched as military units rolled in and leveled their village.

A beautiful read from a talented young author
Revisado: 07-30-22
A beautiful love story to a war torn country that is at once inspiring, emotional, funny, and delicately heart breaking.
