It’s 1967 in the Chagos Archipelago—a group of atolls in the Indian Ocean—and life is peaceful and easy for hardworking Marie. Her fierce independence and love for her home are quickly apparent to Gabriel, the handsome and sophisticated Mauritian secretary to the archipelago’s administrator; it’s love at first sight. As these two lovers from neighboring islands welcome a new son, Joséphin, a bright future seems possible. But Gabriel is hiding a terrible secret.

Another injustice committed by Britian and America that I was completely unaware of.
Revisado: 03-06-25
I liked the very human depictions of the characters and the development of the characters over time. I liked the descriptions of the Chagos Islands and what life was like there before the forced removal of the Chagosians. I enjoyed learning about the Seychelles. I really enjoyed learning about new cultures. I actually like learning about the crimes and injustices committed around the world to poor and marginalized people.

Historia
Ta-Nehisi Coates originally set out to write a book about writing, in the tradition of Orwell’s classic “Politics and the English Language,” but found himself grappling with deeper questions about how our stories—our reporting and imaginative narratives and mythmaking—expose and distort our realities. In the first of the book’s three intertwining essays, Coates, on his first trip to Africa, finds himself in two places at once: in Dakar, a modern city in Senegal, and in a mythic kingdom in his mind.

Powerfully and masterfully written, The Message is enlightening and deeply moving.
Revisado: 01-15-25
I listened to the Audible version even though I had bought a hardback copy. I liked that Ta-Nehisi read the book himself. I liked that he presented information, ideas, and perspectives that were new to me. He also said a lot of things that I knew and agreed with. I was made aware of this novel one morning when I saw Tony Dokoupil verbally and almost physically attack the author on the CBS Morning Show. I was shocked and horrified as the other two hosts allowed it to happen. No more CBS Morning Show for me.
I admire the author's courage in exposing to the world what he personally saw and experienced as a visitor to Palestine. Please listen to his message. Do not allow it to be erased or buried under the rubble of Palestine which has been mostly destroyed by Israel.

Eyeopening!
Revisado: 08-04-22
This account of a boy's journey from Ghana across Africa and ultimately to Spain is informative and touching. It chronicles his hopes and highlights how little he knew about the realities that he would be forced to face on his journey. He sees so much death and cruelty. But, he also encounters kindness and compassion. He understands how very lucky he is to have survived and prospered. It's not a long book. It is well worth taking the time to listen or read. She

Gut wrenching!
Revisado: 06-10-22
This novel is for me an amalgamation of many real stories that I heard over many years of teaching English to immigrants. I couldn't help but think of the hardships and difficulties endured by so many very real people. This was very painful for me to listen to, but I hope that more people do read or listen.

Historia
Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed.

Satisfying conclusion to this series.
Revisado: 04-21-22
I enjoyed this book. I like the world of the ancestor series and the characters. The story is very intricate and quite interesting. The narration is good. I binge read the series. About the middle of this last one, I did get tired of all the fighting. Mark Lawrence did keep changing up the tactics and results of the use of the various powers. I am ready to read The Girl and the Moon which is the third book in the Book of the Ice series by this author, but I will read something without fighting first.

Historia
It's been centuries since the robots of Panga gained self-awareness and laid down their tools; centuries since they wandered, en masse, into the wilderness, never to be seen again; centuries since they faded into myth and urban legend. One day, the life of a tea monk is upended by the arrival of a robot, there to honor the old promise of checking in. The robot cannot go back until the question of "what do people need?" is answered. But the answer to that question depends on who you ask, and how.

A quirky delight
Revisado: 02-12-22
A tea monk goes out into the wild lands searching for crickets and something that seems missing from their life. They encounter a friendly self aware robot who offers to accompany them and hopes that they will accompany it as it checks in on the humans that the robots had left many years earlier. Something like friendship ensues. This is a wonderful novella that should leave you smiling like it did me.
