Historia
Lithuanian immigrant Jurgis Rudkus has invested every last hope in achieving a prosperous new start in a new country. But the only job open to him - in the appalling stockyards of Packingtown, Chicago - will become a brutal, dispiriting, and dangerous challenge to his pride, his family, his life, and his faith in the American Dream. A scathing condemnation of capitalism, corporate corruption, and the exploitation of the working class, The Jungle was a sensation when first published. It stands as one the greatest and most influential proletarian novels ever written.

Great performance, from a great classic. There was so very much more to the story than I had envisioned. It is a definite must listen/read for all of us.

Historia
In 1803, President Thomas Jefferson selected his personal secretary, Captain Meriwether Lewis, to lead a voyage up the Missouri River, across the forbidding Rockies, and - by way of the Snake and the Columbia rivers - down to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis and his partner, Captain William Clark, endured incredible hardships and witnessed astounding sights. With great perseverance, they worked their way into an unexplored West. When they returned two years later, they had long since been given up for dead.

Extremely informative with much of the verbiage being the actual writings of the journals. Narration was good and the story flowed well. I discovered much that was unknown to me pertaining to the actual happenings along the journey.

It's beyond belief that they aren't all in prison!
Revisado: 12-16-18
I was already aware of how bad things were, but I didn't realize how deep this despicable government's wards had become. Criminals each and every one. It's beyond belief that they all aren't in prison for the corruption they've committed.
The story is good, and the narration is good, but it's just sickening to hear about how corrupt nearly all of our government is.
Definitely worth listening to.

Historia
In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world. Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains.

UNBELIEVABLE...
Revisado: 12-16-18
I've watched several shows on the expedition, each numerous times. I've read about the epic journey and been utterly amazed, but this narration literally puts you right into the very expedition! Prebble does a fantastic job of bringing "text-to-life" and it seems as if it is totally effortless. The expedition, in of itself, without all of the unforeseen happenings, would be enough to cause average persons to just give up and surrender. And yet, many of the men were just average middle-aged persons and Shackleton was able to create magic through his leadership and get the entire crew to NOT succumb to and or surrender.
To understand, as best we can, what these men went through and how unbelievable the conditions were along with all of the setbacks which were at every-single-turn it makes a person proud to be a part of the same species.
To truly put it into perspective, the best I can, think of this. When the Apollo 13 mission became life threatening, they had the NASA engineers and experts able to give them a great deal of assistance. They had the world praying for them around the clock, and although they were on the very edge of a life and death situation there had to be a sense that although they were so very far away, they weren't totally alone (not trying to lessen their situation at all, but to put things into perspective).
When the crew of the endurance left South Whales they were alone (except for their one-way, receiver) from the rest of the world. When their ship sank, they were alone on an ice flow in the Southern/Antarctic Ocean, and no one else on the planet knew it! Making matters worse,; despite the fact that no one knew where they were, there was no one who could go and rescue them! Oh, and there was a little matter of a World War going on...and so they were the only ones who could get them out of the predicament they were in.
In my opinion, the greatest of man's raw abilities put down on paper...

The true story (on which the film Jeremiah Johnson was partially based) of John Johnson, who in 1847 found his wife and her unborn child had been killed by Crow braves. Out of this tragedy came one of the most gripping feuds - one man against a whole tribe - in American history.

The Movie had nothing on this
Revisado: 12-16-18
I'm a huge fan of Robert Redford's Jeremiah Johnson, but I have to admit that it's a distant second to this book. Understandably, you can't cram everything into a movie that you find in the book, but having an accurate account of the life of the legendary mountain man portrayed by the narrator is extremely satisfying to one who is hungry to learn as much as he can about Johnson. It was also interesting to see that DelQue was much of the book's support. There was much more to comment on, but I also want to give a huge note of gratitude to the narrator's performance...superb to say the least!.

The Eagles are the bestselling, and arguably the tightest-lipped, American group ever. Now band member and guitarist Don Felder finally breaks the Eagles years of public silence to take fans behind the scenes. He shares every part of the bands wild ride, from the pressure-packed recording studios and trashed hotel rooms to the tension-filled courtrooms, and from the joy of writing powerful new songs to the magic of performing in huge arenas packed with roaring fans.

Revisado: 09-06-18
Narration sounded like Felder himself was telling the story. Don's early life was interesting, but I was waiting for all the juicy stuff and this story delivered. It was truly a sad thing, but now I have a much greater understanding of why the breakup occurred...it definitely makes sense to me know.

Historia
Peter Schweizer explains how a new corruption has taken hold, involving larger sums of money than ever before. Stuffing tens of thousands of dollars into a freezer has morphed into multibillion-dollar equity deals done in the dark corners of the world. President Donald Trump’s children have made front pages for their dicey transactions. However, the media has barely looked into questionable deals made by those close to Barack Obama, Joe Biden, John Kerry, Mitch McConnell, and lesser-known politicians who have been in the game longer.

Autumn 1944. World War II is nearly over in Europe but is escalating in the Pacific, where American soldiers face an opponent who will go to any length to avoid defeat. The Japanese army follows the samurai code of Bushido, stipulating that surrender is a form of dishonor. Killing the Rising Sun takes listeners to the bloody tropical-island battlefields of Peleliu and Iwo Jima and to the embattled Philippines, where General Douglas MacArthur has made a triumphant return and is plotting a full-scale invasion of Japan.

A natural storyteller and raconteur in his own right - just listen to Paddle Your Own Canoe and Gumption - actor, comedian, carpenter, and all-around manly man Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) brings his distinctive baritone and a fine-tuned comic versatility to Twain's writing. In a knockout performance, he doesn't so much as read Twain's words as he does rejoice in them, delighting in the hijinks of Tom - whom he lovingly refers to as a "great scam artist" and "true American hero".

Historia
Ernest Hemingway said, “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn". One hundred years after its author’s death, this classic remains remarkably modern and poignantly relevant. In this new edition, Elijah Wood reads Huck in a youthful voice that may be the closest interpretation to Twain’s original intent. His performance captures the excitement and confusion of adolescence and adventure.

Due to certain personal limitations, I couldn't get through this book on my own (that way with many), but I've wanted to for a long, long time. This audio allowed that to happen, and Elijah Wood brought it to life...way better than a movie could have.
