Sorry... Really? Thrust? Anyway, Danny Kendrick was a down-on-his luck performer who always struggled to find his place. He certainly never wanted to be a hero. He just hoped to earn a living doing what he loved. That all changes when he pisses off the wrong guy and gets sucked into a fantasy realm straight out of a Renaissance Fair. Getting used to a new world is tough. It's even tougher when you're surrounded by axe-wielding barbarians, super hot elf assassins, strange magic, and a jaded System that doesn't appear interested in being charged with yet another companion.

Good grief
Revisado: 12-04-24
I recognize that for there to be character development the character must start from some low point and rise but this main character was absolutely obnoxious. It took 3/4 of the book for him to become a half-decent person. Some of the oversights were SO stupid. Were not for the fact that I paid cash for the book I would return it. Had I been able to return it, I would not have left this review as a small kindness, but as fate would have it I can save a few folks some annoyance. The narration is top notch although some of the sound effects when eating are a bit overdone, but that's a small thing. Award-winning narration, cannot cover for a garbage main character. The ending was OK; I only made it to the end because I hate not finishing a book. I nearly stopped 5 or 6 times. I had to force myself to finish, and afterward, I wanted to bleach my brain by watching the news of all things.

this was a phenomenally well-crafted story with good character development and great action. I honestly wish there were a lot more to read. I would love a sequel but I respect that it wraps with such a nice finish.

So disjointed!
Revisado: 09-18-23
I love hard science fiction, but holy crap. The book starts off with quick changes between characters without giving much reason to care about them. Then the story jumps back and forth for one particular character's past and present, without any chapters or transitions so it's easy to get lost where you are in the story and who is being written about. This is more complicated because the POVs of other characters are still interspersed. The disjointed nature makes it so hard to really enjoy the book. It's been a long, long time since I had to force myself to finish a book at 2x speed and wait for the end with bated breath, so to speak. If you have an issue with the narrator I will say that listening to the story at 1.25x or 1.5x can make a positive difference.

Most days, Sarya doesn't feel like the most terrifying creature in the galaxy. Most days, she's got other things on her mind. Like hiding her identity among the hundreds of alien species roaming the corridors of Watertower Station. Or making sure her adoptive mother doesn't casually eviscerate one of their neighbors. Again. And most days, she can almost accept that she'll never know the truth - that she'll never know why humanity was deemed too dangerous to exist.

dood story despite goddess overuse
Revisado: 07-18-23
if you tend to like Epic sci-fi space operas then you will probably like this. there's definitely in the vein of something Andy Weir would write. if you liked Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson, you'll probably like this as well. it's nowhere near as complex as those stories but it's that sort of story. the only thing that bothered me was the overuse of the word goddess. imagine a 1950s character that uses the word golly with every sentence and replace the word golly with goddess. that got a little old, LOL. nonetheless it was a decent story. not sure it's one I'd read twice but I enjoyed reading it.
if you don't enjoy the story because you find it too difficult to follow it may be that your current tier is too low. lol!

Unbelievably good science fiction
Revisado: 04-27-23
Too often, science fiction, especially stories about aliens, basically comes down to some creature that's like a known human creature but somehow different. The aliens in this story are truly alien, and terrible, and wonderful. that Humanity might someday destroy itself is within the range of belief and one can't help hoping that we should be so lucky to be found by an alien race such as this. the narration is well done and I only wish that there were more audiobooks to stay immersed in this story. I Now understand deeply why Octavia Butler is a legend in the genre. wow what a ride!

On May 18, 1860, William H. Seward, Salmon P. Chase, Edward Bates, and Abraham Lincoln waited in their hometowns for the results from the Republican National Convention in Chicago. When Lincoln emerged as the victor, his rivals were dismayed and angry. Throughout the turbulent 1850s, each had energetically sought the presidency as the conflict over slavery was leading inexorably to secession and civil war.

four books of short it's amazing I struggled so hard to finish it. I'm not sure if this is intended for children but I certainly hope it was. Otherwise it is completely asinine and I'm not particularly religious.

Historia
A week ago, 17-year-old Lela Santos’ best friend, Nadia, killed herself. Today, thanks to a farewell ritual gone awry, Lela is standing in paradise, looking upon a vast gated city in the distance - hell. No one willingly walks through the Suicide Gates, into a place smothered in darkness and infested with depraved creatures. But Lela isn’t just anyone - she’s determined to save her best friend’s soul, even if it means sacrificing her eternal afterlife. As Lela struggles to find Nadia, she’s captured by the Guards, enormous, not-quite-human creatures that patrol the dark city’s endless streets.

So close to good, but dang the angsty romance! >:(
Revisado: 08-12-16
What would have made Sanctum better?
The lack of internal consistency. If the main character has been raped and molested for years AND decides to go into HELL for a friend she cares about more than anything else, WHY, WHY, WHY would she spend all of her time falling apart and wooing over a man?!?!? Why would she forget about her friend so often that even for the reader Nadia becomes little more than an after thought? For a character with that background romance should have built more slowly. For a such a strong and determined character (think of the focus of female athletes) she should have been focused on her goal and perhaps having to push away romantic thoughts or slowly sorting them out throughout the book, but always pushing towards her goal.
Has Sanctum turned you off from other books in this genre?
No, but I will be a bit more wary.
What aspect of Amy McFadden’s performance would you have changed?
Give her some practice or maybe a class on accents. Spanish, Eastern European, British... doesn't matter, all the accents sound vaguely Russian.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Sanctum?
Get rid of the romance altogether or having it be something that builds more slowly and believably into a relationship/romance that really would have made the reader cheer for the heroine and hero coming together in the end. As it is, you want to smack both the characters at every turn... particularly after you've been forced to smack your own forehead long enough to leave a palm print. Seriously, I've read and loved many YA novels that have a romance element, but this is SOOOOOOOOO obnoxiously done.
Any additional comments?
I know that so much work goes into writing and narrating a story and so I really hate that I couldn't like this book. Given the world that Sarah Fine created, this book had some truly amazing potential. I'd hoped that skipping past the pointless angsty romance would allow me to finish the book and see the rescue of this wonderful friend Nadia (who is all too often completely forgotten - see "romance"), but when a story loses internal integrity it's sort of downhill from there. Honestly, if the romance element were treated with a gentler touch and allowed to slowly blossom this book would be a run away hit with most audiences. Sadly that opportunity was missed.

The greatest book you will ever read
Revisado: 07-31-16
I do a lot of reading and so I do not say this lightly. This is the greatest book I've read so far in my life. the autobiography John Quincy Adams was really good but it covered the life of one man though he was great. this book reintroduced me to Classics I hadn't touched in years and introduce me to books that I never thought worth reading, but this professor makes the works so amazingly accessible and applicable to one's life. if you have reached that point at which you are turning Inward and learning about who you are I can't recommend this book highly enough.
