Essentialism is more than a time-management strategy or a productivity technique. It is a systematic discipline for discerning what is absolutely essential, then eliminating everything that is not, so we can make the highest possible contribution toward the things that really matter.

Historia
On April 10, 1970, Hill 927 was occupied by troopers of the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division. By July, the activities of the artillery and infantry of Ripcord had caught the attention of the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) and a long and deadly siege ensued. Ripcord was the Screaming Eagles's last chance to do significant damage to the NVA in the A Shau Valley before the division was withdrawn from Vietnam and returned to the US.

Historia
In the early morning hours of April 1, 1970, more than four hundred North Vietnamese soldiers charged out into the open and tried to overrun FSB Illingworth. The battle went on, mostly in the dark, for hours. Exposed ammunition canisters were hit and blew up, causing a thunderous explosion inside the FSB that left dust so thick it jammed the hand-held weapons of the GIs. Much of the combat was hand-to-hand. In all, twenty-four Americans lost their lives and another fifty-four were wounded.

Good story, badly written and narrated
Revisado: 09-27-23
There is a good story but this book doesn't do it justice. Boring writing, poorly paced. The narrator is awful. I tried to persevere until the author wrote that the US used Apache helicopters in Vietnam. Those came out long after the Vietnam War. If he got that wrong what else is incorrect and unreliable?

What does everyone in the modern world need to know? Renowned psychologist Jordan B. Peterson's answer to this most difficult of questions uniquely combines the hard-won truths of ancient tradition with the stunning revelations of cutting-edge scientific research. Humorous, surprising, and informative, Dr. Peterson tells us why skateboarding boys and girls must be left alone, what terrible fate awaits those who criticize too easily, and why you should always pet a cat when you meet one on the street.

Rambling, Preachy, Vague
Revisado: 01-15-20
I bought this book after I read an opinion piece the author did in the WSJ. His point there was that the leftists lost the battle to impose a socialist government in the USA (I'm not sure they've lost it yet) so now they are trying to impose 'cultural marxism'. I agree with that argument, that the MSM, Democrat party, mainline churches, and the universities are trying to undermine Western traditions and morality - hence the idiocy of transgender rights, wind energy, hating the American flag, etc.
Alas, his book meanders on an on about disconnected topics - how lobsters and wrens fight for dominance, how the Old Testament is a great font of wisdom for modern life, how you should sacrifice yourself like Jesus and Socrates did, etc.
And the narrator's (Dr. Peterson) voice is annoying. I made it through five chapters and gave up.

Historia
For over 40 years, Art Keller has been on the front lines of America's longest conflict: the War on Drugs. His obsession to defeat the world's most powerful, wealthy, and lethal kingpin - the godfather of the Sinaloa Cartel, Adan Barrera - has left him bloody and scarred, cost him people he loves, even taken a piece of his soul. Now Keller is elevated to the highest ranks of the DEA, only to find that in destroying one monster, he has created 30 more that are wreaking even more chaos and suffering in his beloved Mexico.

Very disappointing - drags and is anti-Trump krap
Revisado: 03-15-19
I've read most of Winslow's books. Power of the Dog was very good, I've read it two or three times. Cartel was step down - the ending was not believable at all. I didn't like at all the way Winslow tried to make the Eddie Ruiz character (based on real life thug called Barbie) like some hip cool dude who just happened to be a cartel assassin. Or the Chuy character, a psycho that Keller literally adopts and takes into his home. This latest installment is boring - lots of characters you can't remember on the Mexican side, Keller now the head of DEA - laughable given his anti-suit history, and BTW since when does a senator appoint the head of a government agency? and the anti-Trump b.s. gets old fast. Winslow would have us believe that the Trumps are in bed with the cartels.
And Ray Porter can be a good narrator but sometimes he is overwrought, especially doing Mexicans.

Historia
It is difficult to find another soldier's story to equal Captain Darrell Watt's in terms of time spent on the field of battle and challenges faced. Even by the lofty standards of the SAS and Special Forces, one has to look far to find anyone who can match his record of resilience and valor in the face of such daunting odds and with resources so paltry. In the fight, he showed himself to be a military maestro. After 12 years in the cauldron of war, his cause slipped from beneath him, and Rhodesia gave way to Zimbabwe.

Inspiring, Thrilling, Maddening
Revisado: 08-28-18
This is as good a book about combat and special forces as I've ever read. The Rhodesian SAS could got toe to toe with the SEALS, British SAS, Delta, Speznatz. They are maybe more admirable considering how little equipment and resources they had to work with. They were surrounded by hostile countries that played host to communist supplied, trained and in some cases advised on the ground. Worse, they were sold out by the Western powers including the UK and USA, who embargoed the country.
There's enough history of the country and the conflict to show the context of the struggle. If Israel had pulled off any of the exploits of the SAS there would be blockbuster movies about them. They planned and executed dramatic raids into enemy territory, outnumbered 10 to 1 and prevailed. I mean like 200 men fighting and beating 2,000 terrorists.
The maddening part is that the Western powers looked the other way when whole families of white farmers and white missionaries were butchered. When the terrorists shot down a passenger liner then raped and murdered the survivors the politicians in Washington and London looked the other way. But when the Rhodesians fought back, they were called racists and colonialists.
The courage of these men should inspire anyone who is not blinded by political correctness.

Dynamic Duo - Olsen and Pierce!
Revisado: 05-21-18
Jack Olsen is my favorite true crime author and one of my favorites in any genre. He writes like a great novelist, and gets into the characters' heads. In this book his depictions of the two killers are both hilarious and horrifying. Think of any fictional character and none can beat Cindy Ray and his dimwitted, pompous fool of a boyfriend David West. They're like characters out of Fargo at its best, or Elmore Leonard criminals. Cindy is a master manipulator, like Lady Macbeth, and seems to have multiple personalities, but this may be part of her act to manipulate. There are several other colorful characters, such as David West's Blanche DuBois mother, and Kim Paris, the beautiful operative for an investigator who finally broke the case.
Kevin Pierce is a great narrator. His dry, restrained style is perfect for the content. Some narrators get too hammy, or try to mimic accents with poor results. Not Pierce.
I've listened to several of Olsen's books narrated by Pierce and this is my favorite.

Historia
There are some odd things about Nate’s new apartment. Of course, he has other things on his mind. He hates his job. He has no money in the bank. No girlfriend. No plans for the future. So while his new home isn’t perfect, it’s livable. The rent is low, the property managers are friendly, and the odd little mysteries don’t nag at him too much. At least, not until he meets Mandy, his neighbor across the hall, and notices something unusual about her apartment. And Xela’s apartment. And Tim’s. And Veek’s.

Bad Imitation of Stephen King
Revisado: 01-29-18
What would have made 14 better?
Make the characters believable. Protagonist 'Nate" is 32 y/o college grad working dead end for close to minimum wage, lives in strange apartment building with other mostly 30 something losers. Interminable conversations about children's cartoon Scooby Too - thy even think of themselves as characters from same. They have no dating or personal lives excerpt to act like children from a King novel or Spielberg film - the Goonies comes to mind. Lots of chapters devoted to Nate drinking beer with grizzled old Marine type on the roof. Nate must be a virgin - he feels awkward to see his hot neighbor's bare breasts.
What was most disappointing about Peter Clines’s story?
All the 5 star reviews led me to believe this would be a well written thriller or horror novel, like something King or Dean Koontz would write.
Which character – as performed by Ray Porter – was your favorite?
No one. They are all cardboard.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Ray Porter's reading. He could read from a phone book and do good job.
Any additional comments?
How does a stinker like this get all the 5 star reviews? Is someone gaming the system?

Overwrought and Over-Cynical
Revisado: 06-26-17
What did you like best about The Force? What did you like least?
Lots of action, fast paced, fairly well plotted.
What was most disappointing about Don Winslow’s story?
Overly cynical. Not one decent character. Main character is dirty cop who, with his fellow thug cops, rips off and even murders drug dealers, does drug deals with Mafia, is bag man for city hall, and everyone from the mayor to the feds are corrupt.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
Narrator is skilled with different voices, and does good job with Winslow's frenetic writing style. It took a while to get accustomed to African-American narrating story about Irish-American NYC cop.
Any additional comments?
This story has been done before and better. Prince of the City, The Shield, Serpico, a movie with Richard Gene as the crooked cop (can't remember title).

Historia
When Robin Ellacott opens an unexpected delivery, she is horrified to discover that it contains a woman's severed leg. Her boss, private detective Cormoran Strike, is less surprised but just as alarmed. He suspects that four people from his past could be responsible - and any one of them is capable of sustained and unspeakable brutality. With the police focusing on the one suspect Strike has essentially ruled out, he and Robin take matters into their own hands and delve into the dark and twisted worlds of the other three men.

Disappointing & Disturbing
Revisado: 11-13-15
Would you try another book from Robert Galbraith and/or Robert Glenister?
Not sure. I enjoyed the first two in this series and looked forward to a new installment of Cormarant Strike. But I couldn't finish the first chapter, told from POV of a serial killer who tortures and dismembers young women, and he's stalking the hero's girl Friday Robin. It appears to be a cynical attempt to cash in on the serial killer craze, which I avoid like the plague.
Would you ever listen to anything by Robert Galbraith again?
See above.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
He didn't, it's the material.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Career of Evil?
The whole book.
