Not sure if an editor was involved in this book. THere were so many mistakes, it was almost painful. I like Robert Bryndza, especially his Kate Marshall series. But in this book:
-A person was killed and dismembered in one location. His body was packed in a suitcase and brought to another location, where it left a huge pool of blood. Meat doesn't bleed.
-A woman was beaten, thrown in a closet, the closet locked and the key taken. Her phone was used to make a call. Later, her phone is discovered with her.
-A drug mule, who owes his supplier $6000, is discovered with $30,000 i his stomach--no explanation.
-A car is borrowed, then returned. Apparently someone threw up in it. THat isn't part of the story.
-in the next book, 6-foot tall Erika borrows someone's size 6 shoe. I am 5'4" and wear a size 7.5.
There are similar issues in other Erika Foster books, but these are the most egregious and unnecessary. Again, I like the series, but where is the editor?? And why is Erika so unlikeable to her friends and olleagues? It's hard to find smpathy for such a non-sympathetic character.

I was concerned that no one could do justice to the voices of Russell and Holmes with the loss of the great Jenny Sterlin, but Amy Scanlon did not let us down. Her rendition is different, of course, but convincing nonetheless. And the story, well…wow.

I know it’s hard to switch narrators mid-stream, but I love Jenny Sterlin. If you have listened to Laurie R. King’s Mary Russell series ( and you should!!) you will already know and love her.

I LOVE this series. Diehard fan.But this was a tough book for a couple of reasons...

It's pretty out there. Mostly Walt's fever dream, which is fine, but at times a little tedious. If you haven't read a Logmire before, this is NOT the place to start. And it's essentially a continuation of the prior book, so if you haven't read that, forget it.

A bunch of key characters from earlier books (including the first) make an appearance here, so is you aren't familiar with them, the book won't have as much meaning for you.

That said, it's a brilliant series. Whie George Guidall isn't great at female characters, he IS Walt, Henry, Lucien and Virgil. His cadence and pacing are perfect. The characters are unforgettable, and the plots compelling. Do yourself a favor, and listen from the (brilliant) beginning.

I have liked everything I've read by Dervla McTiernan--a lot--her Cormac Reilly series especially. Her plots are interesting and tight, her characters complex and sympathetic. But this book...

It's like no one gave it a read-through for inconsistencies and loose ends. Was it rushed to press? Did they publish her first draft? Here's an example of the sloppiness: "Hannah wanted to check her phone for the time. She didn't wear a watch." Next page: "Hannah checked her watch and saw that it was 11:30". This is one of 5 examples I could list off the top of my head (others involve timing, such as leaving a place at 7:45 with an hour's drive ahead and arriving there at 8; dangling plot threads, such as Sean telling Sam "We'll fool them! We'll switch cars!" with no reference to switching cars; you get the idea).

On top of that, there's a whiplash-inducing plot shift that, paradoxically, I could see coming, and at which the protagonist doesn't bat an eye.

The narrator who voices Laura is great, really great. She's not just a reader, she's an actress. The other 2 narrators are just ok. If you have a British character, you need to have a narrator who can consistantly carry off an English accent.

THe story isn't a complete waste of time, but if I didn't know it was McTiernan, I never would have guessed it was her work. If this is your first experience of her writing, give her another chance with The Ruin, and the following books.

I loved the first Orphan X book, and was looking forward to the sequel. It was every bit as good as the first, from the story to the performance, with all sorts of interesting twists along the way. Saddled with a discarded Orphan who has tremendous powers of her own, this is as much a story about X as it is about his battles with the bad guys. Very exciting, ingenious and surprising, start to finish.

I have really been enjoying this series. The characters are real, the situations are harrowing, and the continuity between stories is fantastic. I'm sure you could begin anywhere, but there is a richness in the narrative that you'd lose if you started in the middle.

Henrietta Meire is tremendously talented with voices and accents, so it's easy to tell the characters apart even if their names aren't mentioned. I just wish her narrative had more personality. It's not bad at all, but she might as well be reading a weather report or doing television news--the cadence is monochromatic when there's no dialog. Still, she is now the voice of Nicki, Joseph, Dave and Kat in my head, and I wouldn't exchange her for anyone.

Off to download the next book!

Narrators should master accents

I love reading these books. This is the first one I've listened to. I find it painful to hear a narrator try to read in accents he hasn't mastered--South Boston, and British--especially when the main characters are from South Boston and England. It's so distracting (to me, anyway) that it gets in the way of the narrative. Serious pet peeve, that will prevent me from listening to this narrator in the future.

I was really put off by reviews and delayed listening to this book. The subject matter is horrible. But I figured it was Anna, so goodness would prevail (it does, of course). However, I was really disappointed in the lack of good editing and plotting that left holes you could drive a truck through. Claire hadn't smoked in 20 years--she quit when she was pregnant with her seven year old (for example). Where did all of Jordan's pictures come from? Where did all of Claire's untraceable money come from? How does Claire regain her health so quickly at the end? And so on. Just a lot of sloppy stuff that I don't usually see in these books.

As for the story, well, you have to stick with it because if you don't, the subject is so unremittingly awful, you might just succumb to despair. Listening to the end provides enough resolution to bring some relief.

If you are an Anna fan, and you probably are, you will like a lot about the story. But you also will have high expectations that might not be met. I'm glad I listened to it, as I have listened to all the others, but it is not my favorite, for sure.

I like Joyce Bean as a narrator. I think she has a lot of talent, and did the characters of Claire and Jordan justice, which can't have been easy.

Great story, completely gripping. The characters are vivid, especially as read by Robert Glenister--wow. All those different accents, which kept the individuals separate and distinct. I can't wait to listen to the others in this series. And I didn't know the true identity of the author until the credits at the end--now I'm even more of a Rowling fan!
