Meaningful and Educational and Funny, Too
Revisado: 09-22-22
This book is well worth reading for any of us who live with or will encounter or dearly love persons who bravely face physical disabilities. That eventually will include all of us. I grew to love and respect these characters.

Historia
Addie Baum is "The Boston Girl", born in 1900 to immigrant parents who were unprepared for and suspicious of America and its effect on their three daughters. Growing up in the North End, then a teeming multicultural neighborhood, Addie's intelligence and curiosity take her to a world her parents can’t imagine - a world of short skirts, movies, celebrity culture and new opportunities for women.

Linda Lavin Makes This Story Sing!
Revisado: 02-11-21
I purchased this book on sale because I appreciate Anita Diamant’s writing. Instead of merely enjoying an easy listen at a great price, The Boston Girl became a delightful and insightful lesson in history. I learned about the plight of new immigrants to the US in the early 1900’s, AND I was swept along in a rich story about family ties, the friendship of resilient women, and Boston’s development.
I loved Linda Latin’s expert narration. She was droll, hilarious, and serious, all at appropriate moments. I could have listened to Addie’s voice for seven hours more.

Historia
It was a typical evening at a mall outside Portland, Maine. Three teenage friends waited for the movie to start. A boy flirted with the girl selling sunglasses. Mothers and children shopped together, and the manager at the video game store tended to customers. Then the shooters arrived. The chaos and carnage lasted only eight minutes before the killers were taken down. But for those who lived through it, the effects would last forever.

Surprised
Revisado: 01-02-20
I am surprised by how much I loved this crime romance. It almost felt silly at first. Teenage silly. Girl gets dumped. Sees boyfriend at theater. I hardly wanted to continue the listen. But then I got hooked by the intrigue and the characters. This was a sweet treat!

What a sweet, insightful and funny family story! It was full of honest emotions —especially about grief issues, which was a real plus. The narrator was excellent. I’m going to look for more books by this author.

This story leaves me so grateful for excellent writers. I listened in awe, and I have little knowledge of Texas, Mexico, or the life of a cowboy. That shallow description of this beautiful story embarrasses me. Just listen to this novel and allow yourself to be swept away by history, geography, the mix of cultures and languages, a love story, and a coming of age saga that is so lovely that it will leave you in awe.

I Want More from Department Q!
Revisado: 08-19-14
What did you love best about The Purity of Vengeance?
I love all of Jussi Adler-Olsen's books. I am very fond of the humorous and caring relationships among the office mates.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Assad is still a mystery to me, and I want to learn more about him.
Which character – as performed by Graeme Malcolm – was your favorite?
Rose is very intriguing--in all her complexity.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Although the detective work and some of the situations are hard to stomach, I want to read / listen because the characters have become very real to me. They matter to me as individuals.
The bond among Carl, Assad, and Rose becomes very poignant in this book.

Historia
Dellarobia Turnbow is a restless farm wife who gave up her own plans when she accidentally became pregnant at 17. Now, after a decade of domestic disharmony on a failing farm, she encounters a shocking sight: a silent, forested valley filled with what looks like a lake of fire. She can only understand it as a cautionary miracle, but it sparks a raft of other explanations from scientists, religious leaders, and the media.

Captivating listen -- life lessons abound!
Revisado: 01-04-13
Would you listen to Flight Behavior again? Why?
Absolutely. I have already returned to it twice. The story made me laugh out loud, listen intently, and think hard about the effects of my own life upon the environment.
What did you like best about this story?
I loved Kingsolver's depiction of characters. Whether in a lead role or just part of the side story, the people became dear to me. I just heard Will Steger speak right before I began to read this book. His presentation about global warming was compelling, and Flight Behavior put a face (and butterfly wings) on this important issue.
I appreciated Barbara Kingsolver's inclusion of important information about the environment, and the impact that so many of our choices make upon the earth. Some readers/listeners may think that the scientific details slowed the progress of the story line, but I feel that they made the characters' decisions even more engaging.
What about Barbara Kingsolver’s performance did you like?
Barbara Kingsolver's voice is quite ordinary, and even a bit flat. However, the tone of her voice made no difference to me because I was swept up into the story from the first page.
I would listen to any book that Barbara Kingsolver has written. Her stories are memorable and the issues she cares about are worth delving into with her thoughtful guidance.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Absolutely, but it would be a long sitting. I did not want to stop listening, and when I did, I was anxious to get back to the story.
