Action movie script
Revisado: 10-05-24
Yikes I feel bad writing bad reviews bc I feel for the author. This isn’t actually a bad review it’s more just a heads up for potential listeners. I did listen all the way through, the end is much better than most of the book. I had to listen at a higher speed though bc seriously, 90% was just like reading a script for a generic action movie. Most of it completely predictable. Some cringy cliche stuff. And also I imagine the glaring big piece re Sarah - how to say this without a spoiler- but it’s just a bit unbelievable she wouldn’t have questioned certain things a lot sooner. One of the twists did get me which was cool. Kudos there.
I get how great Richard A is in so many ways- but it’s not a thriller worthy of so many stars. Sorry. I appreciate the audible plus catalog a lot. And sometimes you stumble across something amazing. I’m really glad I didn’t waste a credit on this one. But- if you’re in the mood for a mindless action story to play in the background , it’s not bad. Especially if you go into it knowing it really just wants to be a movie script :)

Pleasantly surprised !!
Revisado: 08-10-23
Wasn’t sure if I would be able to get into this as I’m not into the typical sappy “beach read”… but this was really enjoyable! I had just binged a bunch of thrillers so the slower pace on this was fine for me. Like hanging out w these lovely people. Is it feel good and idealistic? Sure. But the humor and the characters come alive enough to pull you in and make you laugh. I’m even going to have to go find a print version or rewind to write down that rewritten “Lord’s Prayer”. I about fell over w laughter . And I loved how there was humor and respect when she was in the “center”… won’t call it what she does bc no spoilers… but man that could have taken a wrong direction writing that part with so much humor, but it worked.
This had faint reminiscence of Fannie Flagg books…

This was good, I loved that road trip too!
And I love this narrator! Although I agree with another reviewer her mispronunciations of some things are pretty funny but it’s not that big of a deal. I definitely hope she does more bc she is definitely one of the best I’ve listened to!

Definitely not as good as her other books
Revisado: 08-06-23
I’m really surprised at all of the positive reviews. I feel like maybe I’m working backwards in her skills as a writer? The first one I listened to was Stranger in the Woods and it was INCREDIBLE. She is a talented writer. Birds in Flight was also excellent. And even the first one in this series was a bit better than this one. I actually returned this initially bc I was bored very early on and her writing skills were not as honed. Like she hadn’t quite figured out the finesse in her use of adjectives and descriptions. I was also cringing from halfway into the book until they figure out a major plot point bc it was so glaringly obvious, and I kept thinking, Kate and the others are not this stupid to not get it! Once they do and things start unraveling it was a bit better. And I was actually surprised at one of the reveals so that was cool.
I made myself listen bc I do want to complete the series. And overall I have been enjoying her books. Perhaps the writer was in a rush or had some personal things going on, or some other reason. I’m still keeping her up there as an excellent writer.
As for the narrator, I agree with a lot of the commentary that she is good, BUT I do agree her accents are super cringeworthy. Especially of any Asian character. The fact that she isn’t great at other accents as well maybe makes it understandable, but I hope she’s been getting some lessons to work on improving that, bc until that improves you will just cringe until those lines are over as it is.

Two years ago, the McGregors' daughter Elodie was abducted and then died in that playhouse. The townspeople insist her abductor had to be a stranger in their town. Blown away!
Revisado: 08-02-23
Wow.
Was not expecting this to be so good.
I just needed a free book to listen to while working on a project and this was available on the audible plus catalog so I gave it try.
The narrator was incredible- melodic and almost hypnotizing.
The writing was superb, especially for being a book in the “thriller/ mystery” genre. Usually you’re lucky if you find a writer that is a decent story teller and you don’t expect them to be a beautiful weaver of words in the telling of their thriller, you just want a good, entertaining story that draws you in and keeps you going. But that writer manages to do both. Right from the start I knew she was a beautiful writer, and I wouldn’t have to ignore any cheesy descriptions or the superficial tools used by most thriller writers. This was much more in the genre of literary fiction. And of course, at the same time, weaving quite the suspenseful mystery along the way.
I was hooked, mesmerized and hanging on every word until the end. Pretty sure I even cried a bit here and there. I’m sad it’s over but I’m off now, crossing my fingers she’s written other books, and I’m also going to check out other books this narrator has performed!
Phewy! If you like a good suspenseful mystery but you also love literary fiction definitely add this to your list!

I guessed the mystery right in the beginning but the writing, especially as it gets further in- is really awesome and something I feel I just wanted to memorize and repeat to everyone! What does it mean to be a woman? What defines one? Good stuff

Buckhead isn’t a place you live, it’s a place you survive. And that applies even to the wealthy housewives that have it all. Fancy cars, designer clothes, and daily salon appointments aren’t nearly enough to keep them fulfilled and happy. Because in this town, privilege and opulence go hand in hand with betrayal and revenge. Jenny, the owner of Glow, an exclusive membership-only beauty salon, knows that better than anyone, because she knows everything about these housewives—down to each individual strand of hair.

I try not to write reviews but…
Revisado: 05-13-22
I understand that books have categories and their quality should be judged according to the category in which they fall.
So that gives leeway for a book in a “suspense romance” or any other variation of categories available for fiction.
I’m saying this bc my rating isn’t because this isn’t wonderful literature. Holy mother of all you pray to the writing of this is the exact opposite of that. But even though my favorite books are quality literature (there is a point here, I promise, and has nothing to do w me) I also can appreciate a good fun murder mystery, a clever romcom, etc. I can appreciate the value in some fun stuff.
This however. I’m still trying to figure out why I listened to the whole thing . (I cheated and had to eventually put it on 1.8 speed bc they were annoying me so much) .
I think someone mentioned in another review the author wrote this like a screenplay and that makes so much more sense. This would work better as a cheesy fun quick stupid fun series w her written cues shown- but reading them as the characters speak them is the most horrible writing I think I’ve ever come across. Of course the characters are going to be cliche. But somehow the author makes cliche characters even more awful and cliche. I think I stayed through to the end on speed listen bc I was traveling by car in no service areas and bc I wanted to see if she would redeem herself at all. She does a little bit with some of her ending stuff. Not necessarily surprising if you’ve ever read a book before but at least you can… well.. I’m not one for spoilers.
Listen if you want. It’s free. It’s awful. Entertaining and distracting if you can stand the awful writing and sometimes awful narration . Good luck.
I’m sorry author. I am not trying to hurt your feelings. It takes courage to write a book . So if you love it then that’s all that matters. If you were writing this for word count and not caring and according to someone else’s rules…. Then please go follow your heart instead. You have a draw to something somewhere in you w a story. Go for it for real.

Lovely and slow but warning 1 narrator is horrible
Revisado: 06-30-21
I’m not even finished w the book yet but I have to comment.
So far the story is fine. It’s lovely, but slow, but I’m sticking w it for the gardens. But it is slow, and not on the top of the best historical fictions or multiple timeline books I’ve read, which I love. But I’m sticking w it. I’m sure it will be a fine gentle (albeit not super exciting) read altogether.
I don’t know why the other reviews haven’t mentioned though that that narrator for Venetia is AWFUL. She’s so horrible I had to buy the kindle book so I read every chapter she speaks. That’s how bad she is. I mean, even if I tried to just grin and bear it, her voice changes the character of the written word in a way that is so diminutive to the character in the book. It’s just awful. So, enjoy the book, but just warning you, you’ll need to get the kindle as well unless you are made of stronger stuff than me. FYI, I hate criticizing anyone in expressing their talent, but honestly I think she would be fine if she didn’t try so hard to add so much gross dripping drama to her voice. If she read it in a regular tone in would be just fine.
