Historia
We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century, that bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays, autocracies are underpinned not by one dictator, but by sophisticated networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures, surveillance technologies, and professional propagandists, all of which operate across multiple regimes, from China to Russia to Iran.

Applebaum makes a compelling argument for the time of law and against collusion. We need to fight against those who would like to destroy our agency.

Historia
Sola Mahfouz was born in Afghanistan in 1996. That same year, the Taliban took over her country for the first time. They banned television and photographs, presided over brutal public executions, and turned the clock backwards on women’s rights, practically imprisoning women within their own homes and forcing them to wear all-concealing burqas. As time passed, Sola began to understand that she was condemned to the same existence as millions of women in Afghanistan. Driven by this devastating realization, Sola began a years-long fight to change the trajectory of her life.

Good History Review of the US
Revisado: 02-02-23
This was a good Birdseye view of the history of the US. It was detailed enough to cover most important historical occurrences, but not so detailed that the telling became bogged down.

Refreshingly Sincere and Thoughful
Revisado: 08-01-22
The path this man took through his search of truth and faith was engaging and informative. I learned of ways to approach and view mine and other’s faith in new, healthy, and inclusive ways. I learned of charitable thinking that expands my understanding of my reality as well as other’s living reality. I learned that the religious history of the world and learning about different ways of sincere worship helps me understand and love my fellow travelers better. Last, I believe that a well told, true life experience such as this is the perfect antidote to the divisive political polarization that is happening in today’s society and will be a mind expanding experience for others as it was for me.

But it also reveals how Washington's hardball tactics transformed the era between the Cold War and the present day, undermining what could have become a lasting partnership.

There is no other author quite like Prachett! This is fun a fun and engaging story with the addition of containing such cleaver and tight communication that you can probably open it to any page, start to read, and be thoroughly entertained! Definitely a book I'll read more than once.

Historia
In 1912, at the height of World War I, brilliant Shakespeare expert Elizebeth Smith went to work for an eccentric tycoon on his estate outside Chicago. The tycoon had close ties to the US government, and he soon asked Elizebeth to apply her language skills to an exciting new venture: code breaking. There she met the man who would become her husband, groundbreaking cryptologist William Friedman. Though she and Friedman are in many ways the Adam and Eve of the NSA, Elizebeth's story, incredibly, has never been told.

So much light shed on truth!
Revisado: 02-15-18
It was very refreshing to listen to this book and get a perspective on the history of the United States that ran just before my birth and that I could only learn about through the history books and talking with my elders. I think it is important to realize that even first hand accounts are colored by views and news stories that may not have shown the real truth. I'm very glad that Elizabeth Smith Freedman's memoirs were preserved and declassified.

An education on apartheid and South Africa
Revisado: 06-28-17
I was an adult during the 1980's and 1990's at the ending of apartheid. I remember Nelson Mandela's release but what I don't remember was what apartheid really was. I never really had an understanding of it. I feel this book was very enlightening to me in this area so man many years later.
Besides the historical context it gives, the life of Trevor Noah was very interesting and was worth reading about. I would have preferred he leave out the swear words though.
