Historia
In the glittering and ruthlessly competitive world of opera, Maria Callas was known simply as la divina: the divine one. With her glorious voice, instinctive flair for the dramatic and striking beauty, she was the toast of the grandest opera houses in the world. But her fame was hard won: raised in Nazi-occupied Greece by a mother who mercilessly exploited her golden voice, she learned early in life to protect herself from those who would use her for their own ends.

Excellent review of a remarkable woman
Revisado: 08-11-24
I did not know much about Opera and this was a bookclub selection. I enjoyed every chapter of the book, particularly on Audible with the musical excerpts. I knew the name Maria Callas, but really enjoyed learning her story. Whether you are an opera fan or not, this was the most enjoyable story.

Historia
Lydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier, the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city, is published, none of their lives will ever be the same.

Migrant challenges looking for a better life.
Revisado: 07-07-24
It was an eye-opening story about the dangerous cartels in Mexico. I learned a lot about these issues from listening to the audible version. It was a tragic story and I wish we could have heard more at the end about the migrants who made it across the border I hope they found a better life in America.

This book uncovered lots of facts about Harry Truman, but I didn’t know.

I love learning about so much that I missed in history classes in college. I’m also pleased that the perception of him as a president changed over the years in a positive way

Historia
Raymond Jaffe feels like he doesn’t belong. Not with his mother’s new family. Not as a weekend guest with his father and his father’s wife. Not at school, where he’s an outcast. After his best friend moves away, Raymond has only two real connections: to the feral cat he’s tamed and to a blind ninety-two-year-old woman in his building who’s introduced herself with a curious question: Have you seen Luis Velez?

Growing up Black in rural North Carolina, Ray McMillian’s life is already mapped out. But Ray has a gift and a dream—he’s determined to become a world-class professional violinist, and nothing will stand in his way. Not his mother, who wants him to stop making such a racket; not the fact that he can’t afford a violin suitable to his talents; not even the racism inherent in the world of classical music.

Revisado: 06-24-23
Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book on Audible. Hard to put down, but easy to pick up. Especially enjoyed the author’s notes at the end of the book. What’s not to love about Ray’s amazing story! A musician in our book club recommended it and I can hardly wait for our discussion. Five stars all the way around!

Historia
In September 1949 Jacqueline Bouvier arrives in postwar Paris to begin her junior year abroad. She’s twenty years old, socially poised but financially precarious, and all too aware of her mother’s expectations that she make a brilliant match. Before relenting to family pressure, she has one year to herself far away from sleepy Vassar College and the rigid social circles of New York, a year to explore and absorb the luminous beauty of the City of Light.

A fascinating story!
Revisado: 01-09-23
I knew so little about Jacqueline Bouvier and her college year spent in Paris! I love that many of the experiences were true, but understanding the post war time in France kept me glued to the book and opened my eyes. I’ve read other books by Ann Mah, but believe this is her best one yet.
