It seems impossible in today’s world to approach the Israeli Palestinian conflict in a way that could satisfy people who hold differing views. I’m very impressed by Sacks’ portrayal of the internal conflict produced by the topic, the all too relatable ways we fall short of our own empathy. All this while showing a beautiful first love story that captures all the magic of those first experiences.
The readers were a bit slow and deliberate so speeding them up helped.

A beautiful and haunting story

I don’t normally leave reviews but I feel more people could benefit from reading this book. I feel a great sense of being seen and belonging from the story told, from the depth and density of the characters and their complex inner lives and relationships. It captures so nicely what it felt like to be young and desperate in the early 2010s, the shared struggle a crucible for the relationships you forge during that time, making them strong as tempered steel.
