Historia
On a day that begins like any other, Hal receives a mysterious letter bequeathing her a substantial inheritance. She realizes very quickly that the letter was sent to the wrong person - but also that the cold-reading skills she's honed as a tarot card reader might help her claim the money. Soon, Hal finds herself at the funeral of the deceased...where it dawns on her that there is something very, very wrong about this strange situation and the inheritance at the center of it. Full of spellbinding menace and told in Ruth Ware's signature suspenseful style, an addictive thriller.

Enjoyable mystery with lots of twists. Beautifully read!
Revisado: 02-12-25
Great book! It is a nice, twisty mystery with an Agatha Christie feel- murder with a cup of tea kind of thing. Do yourself a favor and don't read too much about it...you might see something that spoils the ending. Also, the narrator is AMAZING! Enjoy!

Historia
A comedic look at the experience, pitfalls, and road blocks of online dating on various apps, and an exploration and eventual acceptance of the fact that we all have nonnegotiable deal breakers. Your deal breakers may bear no resemblance to the ones included in this collection, but you will still recognize and relate to the dizzying variety of ways in which one can be put off. If you learn nothing from this book, and you likely will not as it is a silly, joyful observation, take this with you: choose your words carefully. And check your punctuation.

Hilarious look at the world of online dating
Revisado: 10-01-24
A short, sassy, and (despite it all) bravely optimistic look at online dating. The author narrates- loved it!

Amos Decker's life changed forever - twice. The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good and left him with an improbable side effect - he can never forget anything.

I love the genre, but the actual "mystery" here is pretty thin. A short and unremarkable ride.

sounds better than it is...
Revisado: 01-11-20
The best thing about this book is the premise. Interesting idea for a story. The mystery component is entertaining....lots of twists. What i didn't enjoy was the delivery. The main characters are...silly. Lots of melodrama and over-the-top dialogue. It has the feel of an 80's soap opera. Entertaining, but just over-done. That said, the narrator WAS good. She made it easy to listen.

Good. twisty story...not a fan of the narrator
Revisado: 08-22-19
This is my third Wendy Webb book...
I think, in general, she knows how to pull in the reader with a formula that works like this: take a confused/endangered protagonist. place her in a creepy, haunted and affluent setting. Then, add in small cast of characters the reader can't quite trust (including a love interest).
The vanishing was well-placed and enjoyable enough, if a little predictable. My big issue was the narrator. She seems to be working hard to infuse a calm, nonchalant tone throughout. She almost seems bored with story. It really detracted from book. It's as if she wants to keep reminding you that there IS a narrator, rather than just letting the story carry you away.
i would listen to the author again, but only if the narrator were different.

Revisado: 06-29-19
I really enjoyed this one! First, the narration is very, very good. January Lavoy has wonderful voice. She really pulls you in. Second, this is a well-crafted story! Think: small, charming town filled with interesting characters. Now, add in a whole bunch of secrets, people being naughty and a missing child. Who took the kiddo and WHY???? Enjoy! I was sorry it had to end. good one.

Historia
Near an isolated mansion lies a beautiful garden. In this garden grow luscious flowers, shady trees...and a collection of precious “butterflies” - young women who have been kidnapped and intricately tattooed to resemble their namesakes. Overseeing it all is the Gardener, a brutal, twisted man obsessed with capturing and preserving his lovely specimens.

ugh...glad to be done
Revisado: 06-12-19
Let's start with the narration. There are two narrators...the male sounds like a sports announcer. Overly dramatic, with an unnatural high/low cadence. No one speaks like that. It's ridiculous and ruins the book. The female was better, but only a little. Her sweeter than sweet voice is silly, squeeky and high-pitched. I get that she is portraying a teenager, but seriously...no teenager actually speaks like that. She sounds like a 7 year old who has inhaled helium. I ordinarily LOVE audiobooks, but this one is better off read.
As for the storyline, it was an interesting concept, but badly managed. Dialog was weak and the characters just drifted through the book. The unnatural complacency of the women being held captive makes it hard to really take them seriously. And the Gardener. He's a cup of crazy, but pretty one dimensional for all of that. His sons are just just caricatures...one overly brutish, the other overly sensitive. ugh. My advice....keep looking and pick something else.

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

I love a book like this...clever set-up, good pacing, and a twisty, satsfying finale! Well-narrated too.
Go ahead and spend that credit...and don't read too much about this book beforehand. Just enjoy the ride.
