love story based on love and respect
Revisado: 07-07-24
Dislike:
Mispronunciations such as pronouncing the silent 'g' in words like 'long,' and using the schwa sound in the word 'the' when it appears before a vowel sound (it should be a long e), as in the angel, are very distracting.
Note: If an uneducated character misuses words, that makes sense, but that should not affect how the narrator speaks.
Like very much:
The concept that 2 young adults can begin a relationship without immediately jumping into bed is not only refreshing, but realistic for many people, contrary to popularopinion.
The main characters being well-educated, intelligent folks who are also other-centered and kind made reading this story uplifting. The history of Martha's Vineyard tossed in was a pleasant bonus.
Who doesn't like a happy ending?

The use of alliteration and of synonyms throughout the book were amusing.
Revisado: 06-20-24
Dislike: The word "the" was consistently mispronounced when occurring before a word beginning with a vowel sound. This was very jarring to hear.
Like: As with all Koontz books I've read, I enjoyed the characters' sense of right and wrong, the author's sense of humor, and his handling of those differences that sometimes make people targets of the mean-spirited among us.

Very Enjoyable historical fiction
Revisado: 05-04-23
I enjoyed this so much more than I expected. The background of the war means "we know what happened" on the large scale. The personal stories of each of these interesting characters makes the reader care about what happens to each on the individual level. Well-written, well-narrated. It was delightful to read of the Catholic social justice in action, and the prayer lives of some of the characters, which were likely to be part of the lives of such people in that place and time, without the scoffing that so often shows up in modern literature when religion comes into play. .

All credit cards have stopped working. Today. This morning. What cash you have in your wallet is it. ATMs and bank systems are down. You can't get gas, or groceries. Commerce has essentially come to a halt. Such is the backdrop of The Back Door Man. Our society is computer centric. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn. We're plugged in. Managing our finances online. Downloading apps for our iPhone. Reading the WSJ on our Kindle. There are things out there on the cutting edge we don't even know we need to fear. The Back Door Man takes us there.

excellent story
Revisado: 09-12-22
The story was gripping, fascinating, can"t-put-it-down good.
I found jarring some of the grammar issues and misused words or phrases. Example: the character is said (twice) to have made a "split decision" when he'd actually made a "split second decision."
I still recommend it for the plot, the characters and the suspense.

Monsters, indeed
Revisado: 01-02-21
In several places, a sentence or 3 would be repeated, like a skip in a record. This mechanical malfunction was my only problem.
Otherwise, this was, as expected, another enjoyable collaboration between Sturgis and Delaware, solving crimes and delving the depths of human depravity.

Historia
Four years ago, LAPD detective Harry Bosch was on a movie set, asking questions about the murder of a young production assistant, when an armored car arrived with $2 million cash for use in a heist scene. In a life-imitates-art firestorm, a gang of masked men converged on the delivery and robbed the armored car with guns blazing. The crime was never resolved, and the young woman's murder was in the stack of unsolved-case files Bosch carried home the night he left the LAPD.
