Historia
At seven minutes past midnight, thirteen-year-old Conor wakes to find a monster outside his bedroom window. But it isn’t the monster Conor’s been expecting - he’s been expecting the one from his nightmare, the nightmare he’s had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments. The monster in his backyard is different. It’s ancient. And wild. And it wants something from Conor. Something terrible and dangerous. It wants the truth.

Historia
Tuscany, 1944: As Allied troops advance and bombs fall around deserted villages, a young English soldier, Ulysses Temper, finds himself in the wine cellar of a deserted villa. There, he has a chance encounter with Evelyn Skinner, a middle-aged art historian who has come to Italy to salvage paintings from the ruins and recall long-forgotten memories of her own youth. In each other, Ulysses and Evelyn find a kindred spirit amidst the rubble of war-torn Italy, and set off on a course of events that will shape Ulysses's life for the next four decades.

I’m conflicted on this one
Revisado: 10-16-24
It starts slow but because of other reviews, I was aware of this from the beginning. I myself didn’t think it started that slow though and in fact I liked it from the get go.
As the story progressed I became deeply attached to the characters and the author had a beautiful way of weaving lives together. I needed to know what happened in each of their lives and couldn’t put the book down. Her narration was absolutely amazing as well
But towards the end, we delve into the story of Evelyn and it felt so disjointed. I felt like I started a whole new book. It became very anticlimactic and once it ended I was dumbstruck

Historia
Young Hiram Walker was born into bondage. When his mother was sold away, Hiram was robbed of all memory of her - but was gifted with a mysterious power. Years later, when Hiram almost drowns in a river, that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he’s ever known. So begins an unexpected journey that takes Hiram from the corrupt grandeur of Virginia’s proud plantations to desperate guerrilla cells in the wilderness, from the coffin of the South to dangerously idealistic movements in the North.

I didn’t know this would have a supernatural element in it and I think that’s what wrecked it for me. I did love the main character, he was a hero and very likable

Historia
In September 1969, a fumbling, cranky old church deacon known as Sportcoat shuffles into the courtyard of the Cause Houses housing project in south Brooklyn, pulls a .38 from his pocket, and, in front of everybody, shoots the project's drug dealer at point-blank range. The reasons for this desperate burst of violence and the consequences that spring from it lie at the heart of Deacon King Kong, James McBride's funny, moving novel and his first since his National Book Award-winning The Good Lord Bird.

Glad I stuck it out
Revisado: 05-24-24
So James McBride stories contain a LOT of character development. That’s a good thing. This novel however had me really debating whether to continue on because so many scenes seemed to drag on and on. But in true James McBride fashion he ends up bringing everything together, tying up all the loose ends and touching your heart. The depth of the story just wouldn’t have been possible without all that detail and in the end you’re so grateful he fleshed out all those characters so well because I truly miss hanging out with them now that I’ve finished.
I did like The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store a bit more than this one but either way, his story telling is phenomenal.

Historia
Kentucky, 1850. An enslaved groom named Jarret and a bay foal forge a bond of understanding that will carry the horse to record-setting victories across the South. When the nation erupts in civil war, an itinerant young artist who has made his name on paintings of the racehorse takes up arms for the Union. On a perilous night, he reunites with the stallion and his groom, very far from the glamor of any racetrack.

I guess I’m the odd duck, I really didn’t like it
Revisado: 05-15-24
I was so excited to read this based on reviews, but I just don’t get it. I didn’t find the Story moving and it was very slow. There wasn’t enough conflict or a tension to have me turning the next page to see what happens, it just read like a day in the life of the character over and over and over again. I also felt the narration was lacking.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

I started it over again the minute I finished it!
Revisado: 05-08-24
I was hesitant to read this because frankly, I’m emotionally spent by all the racial tension in the world today. I wasn’t sure I wanted to be immersed in a story about it for many hours and wear out my heart even more. But it received wonderful review so I gave it a try and I’m so glad I did.
It takes a while to get going, and there is a lot of time devoted to setting up the backstory and character development, which in the end you are very grateful for.
I cannot say enough how moving and heart wrenching this book is. Such a glorious story of triumph and love against all odds. I highly recommend it!!

I don’t understand the good reviews
Revisado: 04-19-24
The story is so basic and cliche and the characters are so boring and *predictable*. This author tells rather than shows so it’s not compelling or interesting.
The narration is awful - she sounds like a female Rod Serling narrating the Twilight Zone. The accents are grating and the male voice is flat and monotonous.
Not even going to finish this one unfortunately

Skip this, the writing is ridiculous
Revisado: 02-22-24
I found this impossible to finish for two reasons. The female narrator was grating to listen to. She has a certain cadence that she never strays from and after several hours of it I could take no more. She often over performed and it was annoying
Secondly, the story was juvenile. Scenes that were supposed to be suspenseful were instead so over the top melodramatic with a predictable outcome. The female character also whines INCESSANTLY. She’s so insufferable I couldn’t care less what happened to her.

Historia
To some, the concept of having faith in a higher power or a set of religious beliefs is nonsensical. Indeed, many view religion in general, and Christianity in particular, as unfounded and unreasonable. 6Norman Geisler and Frank Turek argue, however, that Christianity is not only more reasonable than all other belief systems, but is indeed more rational than unbelief itself. With conviction and clear thinking, Geisler and Turek guide listeners through some of the traditional, tested arguments for the existence of a creator God.

Incredibly comprehensive. Doesn’t just present evidence but also presents the skeptics objections and then handily answers them as well. I’m on my third listen. It’s helped me in so many conversations with skeptics
