You don’t have to agree with everything the author says to recognize that supply side/trickle down economics has been a horrible scourge for all people, and especially for persons of color. Capitalism as it’s currently practiced is not sustainable for people or the planet. It’s time to break up.

Historia
Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow reveals in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency.

The Story of a Profoundly Good Man
Revisado: 02-04-24
This biography conveys the nature of Grant as a profoundly human and decent man with some incredible talents. The narration is superb. As someone educated in the myth of the lost cause, as my generation was, it’s good to learn the truth about this incredible man. Well written and entertaining, these were hours well spent.

Historia
In the 1950s, a young Indianapolis minister named Jim Jones preached a curious blend of the gospel and Marxism. His congregation was racially mixed, and he was a leader in the early civil rights movement. Eventually, Jones moved his church, Peoples Temple, to northern California, where he got involved in electoral politics and became a prominent Bay Area leader. But underneath the surface lurked a terrible darkness.

This work weaves together the complex social conditions and personal situations that come together as a catalyst for tragedy. This complex combination comes together more often than we think. Jones, Hitler and Putin undoubtedly have shades of these elements and mass followings to go with them. There is a lot to learn from this excellent work.

With dramatic flair, Jeff Guinn delivers the definitive portrait of Bonnie and Clyde. These media-savvy outlaws appealed to America's Depression-era hunger for swashbuckling characters. Glowing radio and newspaper reports transformed these "public enemies" into celebrities - much like the cinema gangsters of the time.

A Masterpiece
Revisado: 02-18-23
This is not just the story of Clyde and Bonnie but the story placed in the context of society, faith, family and the criminal justice system of the time. It is hard not to have sympathy for Clyde and Bonnie and it is impossible to not translate their story to conditions today. Jeff Guinn is a master at telling a historical story and placing it in context with the times.

For the first time in thirty years, more than a dozen former ATF agents who participated in the initial February 28, 1993, raid speak on the record about the poor decisions of their commanders that led to this deadly confrontation. Revelations in this book include why the FBI chose to end the siege with the use of CS gas; how both ATF and FBI officials tried and failed to cover up their agencies’ mistakes; where David Koresh plagiarized his infamous prophecies; and direct links between the Branch Davidian tragedy and the modern militia movement in America.

This is a thorough and compelling account of the siege at Mount Carmel. This challenged everything I thought of the raid which was shaped by the government’s account at the time. Jeff Guinn does an excellent job at presenting both sides of an event that, by any measure, was a horrible mistake and tragedy. It was a great listen.

Historia
Award-winning journalist Masha Gessen's understanding of the events and forces that have wracked Russia in recent times is unparalleled. In The Future Is History, Gessen follows the lives of four people born at what promised to be the dawn of democracy. Each of them came of age with unprecedented expectations, some as the children and grandchildren of the very architects of the new Russia, each with newfound aspirations of their own - as entrepreneurs, activists, thinkers, and writers, sexual and social beings.

So much gibberish
Revisado: 04-25-22
You may wish to invest more than a chapter, but after listening to this silliness for an hour, I realized life is too short. It’s a disjointed discussion of nothing of consequence. The title of the book, and the premise were so promising, but there just isn’t any there there. Good luck if you can slog through this.

Political violence rips apart several towns in southwest Texas. A far-right militia plots to kidnap the governor of Michigan and try her for treason. An armed mob of Trump supporters and conspiracy theorists storms the U.S. Capitol. Are these isolated incidents? Or is this the start of something bigger? Barbara F. Walter has spent her career studying civil conflict in places like Iraq, Ukraine, and Sri Lanka, but now she has become increasingly worried about her own country.

Essential For Our Times
Revisado: 02-05-22
This book is absolutely accurate, and ends on a hopeful note. There are extremely powerful domestic and foreign interests working very hard to end the American experiment. They are using a tried and true playbook. But because they are so predictable, we can take steps to stop them, and the book identifies sensible steps that will control these forces. But we have to get smart. The truth is that demographics and time are on the side of the American experiment. I am hopeful after listening to this book.

For all the literature about Adolf Hitler, there have been just four seminal biographies; this is the fifth, a landmark work that sheds important new light on Hitler himself. Drawing on previously unseen papers and a wealth of recent scholarly research, Volker Ullrich reveals the man behind the public persona, from Hitler's childhood, to his failures as a young man in Vienna, to his experiences during the First World War, to his rise as a far-right party leader.

Excellent History
Revisado: 11-21-21
I’ve read most of the seminal works on Hitler, and have a degree in history. I hesitated to listen to another book on the subject. This work goes carefully into Hitler’s disposition, personal life, and political approaches without crossing the line into pure conjecture. Where accounts differ, both sides are presented. There is no way one can listen or read this account, and not believe that there are dramatic parallels to recent events in the US. This is a cautionary tale for all generations, and conditions can change on a dime.

Historia
During the 20th century, America managed to make its economic and social systems both more and more fair and more and more prosperous. A huge, secure, and contented middle class emerged. All boats rose together. But then the New Deal gave way to the Raw Deal. Beginning in the early 1970s, by means of a long war conceived of and executed by a confederacy of big business CEOs, the superrich, and right-wing zealots, the rules and norms that made the American middle class possible were undermined and dismantled.

Great History and Prognostication
Revisado: 09-13-20
This book cogently, and with ample documented support, explains how the right has systematically stripped power from the masses and concentrated it in the hands of corporations and the wealthy. The reality is that the Reagan administration did untold damage that we’re now reaping a generation later. Trump is the ultimate expression of this dystopian dysfunction, and it’s going to get much worse if we don’t do something about it. Solutions thought to be radical by the right are common sense. A universal basic income, Medicare for all, and a Green New Deal are not radical; they’re common sense. These are my takeaways, and they may challenge your point of view, but the author has carefully researched his work and supports his positions. There is nothing on the right as cogent.

One of today's premier biographers, Jean Edward Smith, has written a modern, comprehensive, indeed ultimate book on the epic life of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. This is a portrait painted in broad strokes and fine details. We see how Roosevelt's restless energy, fierce intellect, personal magnetism, and ability to project effortless grace permitted him to master countless challenges throughout his life. Smith recounts FDR's personal battles and also tackles head-on and in depth the numerous failures and miscues of Roosevelt's political career.

What a leader really looks like
Revisado: 05-31-20
This book captures the essence of FDR. Far from a perfect man, he was an amazing leader, and was truly selfless. He literally created what has been best about America, and never wavered in his duties. The book criticizes Roosevelt where it is deserved, and presents supporting facts. It also debunks the myths that have shamelessly been used to sully the memory of this great American. It is no exaggeration that he saved America during the depression, and led America extraordinarily during WWII. While Churchill and Roosevelt are two of my personal heroes, I was completely open to an unvarnished portrayal of FDR. That is what this is. All generations have had choices to make in their leaders. In these trying times, where men of substance seem so hard to find, this book will remind you that our obligation is to accept no less.
