Incredibly boring
Revisado: 01-29-16
Well..."this novel is a saddening bore, 'cause she's lived it ten times or more" Bowie could have told.
The start is fascinating, but it soon becomes so dull and repetitive! The style is so plain that I wonder how this book could have such a great success.
The reader doesn't help, but I surely don't envy her.
First time I am so disappointed by an Audible audiobook.

Historia

Ben scritto e benissimo raccontato.

Historia
Oliver Sacks is well known as an explorer of the human mind - a neurologist with a gift for complex, insightful portrayals of people and their conditions. However, he is also a card-carrying member of the American Fern Society, and since childhood has been fascinated by these primitive plants and their ability to survive and adapt in many climates. Oaxaca Journal is Sacks' spellbinding account of his trip with a group of fellow fern enthusiasts to the beautiful, history-steeped province of Oaxaca, Mexico.

Oliver Sacks at his best: intelligent, compassionate, mind-opening.
Wonderfully written and read, a delightful diary of a trip to Mexico: ferns, carpets, history, food and plants and much more.

Historia

Historia
When Helen MacDonald's father died suddenly on a London street, she was devastated. An experienced falconer captivated by hawks since childhood, she'd never before been tempted to train one of the most vicious predators: the goshawk. But in her grief, she saw that the goshawk's fierce and feral anger mirrored her own.

This is an outstanding memoir and very well read too (I wasn't very confident about this, because the reader is the author herself, but well! Helen, you got it right!).
Grief and falconery, literature and biography.....

Historia
A powerful, blazingly honest memoir: the story of an 1100-mile solo hike that broke down a young woman reeling from catastrophe and built her back up again. At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. After her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she decided to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than an idea: vague, outlandish, and full of promise.

Powerful
Revisado: 03-14-15
I feared the narration of such a journey could be not up to the task of capturing the beauty, emotion and challenges that such an endeavour must have been for ms. Strayed.
Well I was pleasantly surprised.
It is totally captivating and a great read!

Historia
In Being Mortal, best-selling author Atul Gawande tackles the hardest challenge of his profession: how medicine can not only improve life but also the process of its ending. Medicine has triumphed in modern times, transforming birth, injury, and infectious disease from harrowing to manageable. But in the inevitable condition of aging and death, the goals of medicine seem too frequently to run counter to the interest of the human spirit.

You must read this book
Revisado: 01-07-15
Because you - like me - are going to die one day. Because maybe you - and maybe I too - will become one day old and frail.
Because maybe you too - like me - have an old parent to care for. Maybe you too - like me - have lost a parent to a terminal illness.
And we have a lot of doubts, and hopes, and fears. This author helps us a bit, with his compassionate interest for unpleasant and important questions that concern us all.
Don't miss this book, it's important.

One cold autumn night, a woman is found hanging from a beam at her holiday cottage. At first sight, it appears like a straightforward case of suicide; María had never recovered from the death of her mother two years previously and she had a history of depression. But then the friend who found her body approaches Detective Erlendur with a tape of a séance that María attended before her death and his curiosity is aroused. Driven by a need to find answers, Erlendur begins an unofficial investigation into María's death.

Historia
The new novel - a book that sold more than a million copies the first week it went on sale in Japan - from the internationally acclaimed author, his first since IQ84. Here he gives us the remarkable story of Tsukuru Tazaki, a young man haunted by a great loss; of dreams and nightmares that have unintended consequences for the world around us; and of a journey into the past that is necessary to mend the present. It is a story of love, friendship, and heartbreak for the ages.

A bit colourless indeed.
Revisado: 10-24-14
Being a huge Murakami fan, I expected the best.
This book disappointed me a little. A quiet story, some plot twists left unresolved, not much energy overall.
What I enjoyed the most though, was Bruce Locke's excellent reading. It really makes the difference and gives true colour to the colourless Tsukuru.
