Historia
With their supplies reclaimed and food enough for the future, the group at Barry's cabin can do more than just scrape by. Between fruitful gardens, great friends, and sturdy fences—not to mention karaoke—life in the zompoc is better than ever. Nothing is perfect, however. Across the country, safe zones are mysteriously going dark, and Oregon's summer weather has turned the forest into a tinderbox. As the unknown danger closes in and smoke begins to fill the sky, the survivors are all too aware of how quickly plans unravel, fences fall, and luck runs out.

Prepare for heartbreak
Revisado: 07-05-24
I’ve listened to all of Sarah Lyon Flemings’ books. She is a master of building relationships and putting a more personal experience within a zombie apocalypse. But you have to feel pain to appreciate what you have. So all the relationship building is just a setup to make you feel true heartache. There is a couple of scenes that I will never be able to listen to again. I’m looking dowered to the next book so a can emotionally recover.

Discerner story
Revisado: 08-18-23
This was different than the other stories I’ve read about Cleopatra Selene. I enjoyed her growth. The music between chapters was very distracting, pulling me out of the story. This was especially irritating in the middle of scenes.

Chosen from birth to usher in a new era, Poppy’s life has never been her own. The life of the Maiden is solitary. Never to be touched. Never to be looked upon. Never to be spoken to. Never to experience pleasure. Waiting for the day of her Ascension, she would rather be with the guards, fighting back the evil that took her family, than preparing to be found worthy by the gods. But the choice has never been hers.

Do I love it, or love it not?
Revisado: 01-23-21
I am very torn on this book.
Starting with the pro... very original idea. Supernatural beings, a few real earth locations, a centerpiece with unique abilities. A very well thought out and executed plot. Loved the characters. This is where the author shines.
The con... The relationship between Poppy and Hawk is poorly done. It is very staged and unrealistic. The author talks out a bunch of points and drags out conversations that are just a waste of time. I completely skipped the first intimate scene. Very cringy. Not only that, I got bored. A woman should not be bored during (what is supposed to be) a chapter long love scene. The fact that there is no depth to either character makes Poppy look dumb and Hawk like a jerk.
Yet I still want to move to the next book. I really hope that there is more action and plot-oriented content in the next.

How far can she make it in the Culling?

Better then book 1
Revisado: 10-13-20
I am much happier with this book then I was for book one. The characters develop more personal growth, the main character and secondary characters. While in the first book, the actions of the characters did not match their personalities, this one was more believable. The development of the relationship was well thought out. And the writer dropped the use (mostly) of “heck” and other unrealistic substitutes for curse words.

Plot, good. Writing skills, bad.
Revisado: 10-10-20
This book is for young adults and possibly teens. I’ll explain this statement at the end.
I like the story. The political dynamic is very interesting and the fact that is was caused by a virus is very well laid out. Especially interesting and worth thinking about since at the time I listened to this, the 2020 election is weeks away and we are still fighting COVID.
Now to the bad...The work was not done by a skilled writer. No character development, the characters are not realistic, and too much projection. The dialogue sounds like a blend of 1950’s and (what the writer assumes) is millennial lingo. My grandmother, nor my kids would talk like this.
The writing is a complete projection of how she wants it to play out. Twenty year old guys do not say “heck”! “Girl...” is not used THAT often by females chatting among each other. I was very disappointed that someone who could come up with a great plot did not take the time to learn how to write.
I’m going to continue the series. Like i said, fantastic storyline. But if you are the type of person who appreciates writing skills as much as the story itself, be prepared.

Historia
In a world where nothing supernatural exists, Tess Eckhart is positive she's going crazy. After her complete freak-out at a high school party, her family is too. So much that they pack their bags and move across the country, next to a nationally-renowned facility for the mentally ill. Tess is determined to fit in at her new school, despite the whispers and stares. But when it comes to Luka Williams, a reluctantly popular boy in her class, she's unused to a stare that intense.

Unique Plot
Revisado: 10-03-20
I really like the plot of this book. It really taps into what it is like to feel like you are crazy. A lot of books can’t do that.
I wasn’t crazy about the narrator. Her style just didn’t work with Tessa’s personality. It was slow and zen, when it should have been a little stronger.

Historia
A Great Winged One will soon arise and cast his fearsome shadow upon the land. And just as Night slays Day, and Day slays Night, so also shall another Black Witch rise to meet him, her powers vast beyond imagining. So foretells the greatest prophecy of the Gardnerian mages. Carnissa Gardner, the last prophesied Black Witch, drove back the enemy forces and saved her people during the Realm War. Now a new evil is on the horizon, and her granddaughter, Elloren, is believed to be Carnissa's heir—but utterly devoid of power in a society that prizes magical ability above nearly all else.

Unexpectedly Unique
Revisado: 08-15-20
I picked this book on accident and I don’t regret it. I was looking for a book narrated by Julia Whalen, my favorite, for her melodic, well dictated voice. I meant to choose another book about witches and got distracted. Oops.
Deciding to go along with it, I started out a little bummed as it started out very cliche. Simple girl that doesn’t know she is powerful, love interest, the girl bully at school, social unrest. But I couldn’t help but like all of the characters. Yes, even the antagonists, not because they are justified in their actions, but how well developed they are.
This author has put together a set of characters that are so well developed and unique that I didn’t feel like they were forced, which I find a lot in YA books.
The main character’s personal growth is realistic and even during her dark times, you can feel her warring with herself. I kept wanting to rush through the development with her love interest, but no. It is paced realistically and over time.
As far as the social unrest,,you can follow through seeing every culture and religion, how opposite groups groups come together and watch others solidify in their radical views. I hope that anyone else that reads this book can find way that Elloren searches for truth, as satisfying as I did.
Now on to book two. I can’t wait!

Could have been better
Revisado: 06-25-19
Let’s start with the good. While it follows cliche and predictable plot lines with unoriginal characters, the nephilum aspect is good. Research was clearly done.
The unfortunate part, dialogue and narration killed it! None of the characters have their own unique way of talking! Lilith, she’s thousands of years old. Despite the fact she should be expected to change with the times, she talks like a teenager with no indication of her age. And she acts like a teen too. Come on....
Narration, it’s enough to keep me from reading the next book for a while if not at all. The narration can make or break a book. The voices change of each character depending on who is vocals change too much and there is no emotion when read AT ALL. Neither even attempted to sound the opposite sex. The guy was way better than the girl but that’s not necessarily a compliment. I will make a point to not read books they narrate again. Now that I think about that, I will have to check out who is reading on the next book.
It is a real shame that the terrible dialogue was slaughtered by even worse narration.

The Story Continues... or Repeats
Revisado: 05-27-18
I love the characters. And love the world David has created. I love the narrator. There would be no need to even say who’s talking because his voices are so unique and on point. I was very disappointed that he didn’t narrate Belgarath the prequel. The twist with the king of Murgos was brilliant and unexpected.
I do not like the repetition. I get what the grand scheme of things is but it is blatantly written over and over. I get it. It is also obvious that facts in the first book were changed or poorly justified because the sequel was not planned. And C’Nedra’s character changed too much. I get she is a mother now but she was strong and willful in the first series. It was just too much of a 180.
Regardless of the flaws, it is a world you can walk into. My fellow fantasy lovers, this is for
you. Read the Belgariad first of course. Maybe read Polgara the sorceress before as well. DO NOT read Belgarath the Scorcer before. That book butchered everything Eddings created.

Historia
What if—whoosh, right now, with no explanation—a number of us simply vanished? Would some of us collapse? Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down? That's what the bewildered citizens of Mapleton, who lost many of their neighbors, friends and lovers in the event known as the Sudden Departure, have to figure out. Because nothing has been the same since it happened—not marriages, not friendships, not even the relationships between parents and children.

So Conflicted
Revisado: 04-26-18
What did I like? The concept. Not your typical apocalypse book. The guilty remanent is clearly based off of the watchers in the book of revelations and his interpretation is awesome.
What did I not like? I can’t even figure it out. I really wanted to love this book. It have such good potential and I really want to continue the series but I got bored! It was so slow and didn’t even start to get good until the end. The author said that it was supposed to be a little comical. I did not get that vibe at all!
Just an observation, I feel like the author wrote this book to become a TV series.
Overall I would probably recommend the book but not with much excitement. And I am wondering for the first time ever with the TV series is better than the book....
