Historia
Thumbing across the scorched West Texas desert, loner Jack Reacher has nowhere to go and all the time in the world to get there. Cruising the same stretch of two-lane blacktop is pretty Carmen Greer. But for Reacher, the lift comes with a hitch. Carmen's got a story to tell, and it's a wild one. All about her husband, her family secrets, and a hometown that's pure Gothic. She's also got a plan. Jack Reacher's part of it. And before the sun sets, this ride could cost them both their lives.

I can't stand Dick Hill's voice
Revisado: 10-15-24
I'm sure he's a nice man, but his narration and voices, especially his female and child voices, grate on every nerve I have. I've gotten to where I bypass books because of him.
I'm really trying to get through this book, because I do like the Reacher stories, but it's hard. I liked Johnathan McClain's voice and narration much better. As for the story: it's not moving along very well so far. Carmen is whiny and just not very interesting. Fingers crossed that the story redeems itself.

Historia
Deborah Harkness first introduced the world to Diana Bishop, an Oxford scholar and witch, and vampire geneticist Matthew de Clermont in A Discovery of Witches. Drawn to each other despite long-standing taboos, these two otherworldly beings found themselves at the center of a battle for a lost, enchanted manuscript known as Ashmole 782. Since then, they have fallen in love, traveled to Elizabethan England, dissolved the Covenant between the three species, and awoken the dark powers within Diana’s family line.

Just awful
Revisado: 08-03-24
What a HUGE letdown. I really enjoyed the first three books, and I liked Marcus's story in 'Time's Convert'. So I was excited to hear Harkness was continuing the series.
Then we get this??? To start, it's utterly boring. It just meanders along and eventually goes nowhere. I looked at some reviews and some said it ended on a cliffhanger. I was glad when it finally ended, and my hangnails are better cliffhangers than this.
Then, favorite characters --Marcus, Phoebe, Gallowglass, Fernando, Marthe--are either barely a part of the story or not in it at all. Ysabeau has a very small role, and her character seems stiff and forced. Sarah's role is also pretty small, and she comes off as crazy and not someone close to Diana at all. It's almost like Sarah and Diana had a fight Harkness forgot to tell us about.
Diana and Matthew's relationship seems forced as well. At one point, there is what is supposed to be a romantic interlude in the forest with them, but it's just weird. There is very little romance between Diana and Matthew, where in the other books, it was an underlying theme. It's just not present here.
I get that Harkness is trying to introduce Diana's other side of the family, so she's created them with different personalities and traits, but we never hear their stories flesh out, like we did with her other characters. She just plunks them down into the story and drives on. These new characters lack depth, so I really don't care about them. There are really no back stories so that we get to know them.
The overall story of Diana exploring her dark side really goes nowhere. The whole thing with Phillip and Rebecca getting tested is a letdown, that again goes nowhere. I mentioned before that it's boring, and it is; it just drones on and on and goes absolutely nowhere. I just wanted to finish it, and I kept hoping that there would be something to redeem this mess. I guess I was hoping for a continuation of the first three books, but this...this is not it. This is a sad offshoot of an otherwise good series.

I didn't know what to expect, really, but I absolutely enjoyed this story. Very well done by the actors. The story moves along nicely, with lots of suspense. I like the sound effects. I do wish Audible had a complete list of the actors. Just a great listen.

Disappointing and anticlimactic
Revisado: 12-14-23
This one builds up to...nothing. All the running about throughout the entire book, the angst over the kidnapping, and then, nothing. It's really tame and anticlimactic. The narration is fine; he just doesn't have much with which to work.

Historia
Ordered to hold an abandoned army post, John Dunbar found himself alone, beyond the edge of civilization. Thievery and survival soon forced him into the Indian camp, where he began a dangerous adventure that changed his life forever. Set in 1863, the novel follows Lieutenant John Dunbar on a magical journey from the ravages of the Civil War to the far reaches of the imperiled American frontier, a frontier he naively wants to see "before it is gone".

Revisado: 10-04-22
As always, with each book he reads, George Guidell brings this story to life like no one else could.
We've all seen the movie, and it was a good one. They did stay relatively true to the book, which I like.

Historia
Raised in the historic southern splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows of honor and duty from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor has been accused of murdering Viola Turner, the African-American nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the 1960s. Penn is determined to save his father, but Tom, stubbornly invoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses to even speak in his own defense.

Blah. Just blah.
Revisado: 07-15-22
The premise of the story had the potential to be interesting. But Iles has the habit of getting verbal diarrhea, and will go on and on about some minute detail, instead of moving the story along. Probably at least a third of this book could have been cut out with no effect on the story. Your suspension of disbelief is reeeeaaally stretched in places.
The ending was bad, and anticlimactic. After dragging out the drama at the end, and having one last bout of verbal diarrhea, the end of the story just falls flat.
I like Penn Cage as a character, and I think more could be done with him if Iles was a better writer. Iles' central, underlying theme in these books is always "white people are bad." Penn could be and do so much more. I really don't like his girlfriend; she's quite selfish, and really doesn't add anything except aggravation to the story.
Lastly, some people are upset because Dick Hill didn't read this one. Ledoux does a good job; I also enjoyed his performance for Water For Elephants. I've never cared for Hill's feminine voices, and Ledoux does a better job.
Overall, a very underwhelming read.

On the right side of the law. Sort of. Sebastian Rudd is not your typical street lawyer. He works out of a customized bulletproof van, complete with Wi-Fi, a bar, a small fridge, fine leather chairs, a hidden gun compartment, and a heavily armed driver. He has no firm, no partners, no associates, and only one employee: his driver, who's also his bodyguard, law clerk, confidant, and golf caddy.

OK, except...
Revisado: 12-03-21
I like John Grisham's books, but this one is his political opinions disguised as a book of short stories. Unfortunately, it seems that several authors are choosing to go this route. Note to authors: nobody buys your books to hear your political opinions or your take on the woes of society.
I see several people complaining that they didn't realize this was a book of short stories, but I have no problem with the format.
I had no issues with the narrator.

Why Kevin Hearne chose to end this story like he did is beyond me. Is he depressed, or just delusional?
Luke Daniels delivers a good performance, as always.
I'm just really disappointed that, after investing years into following Atticus's story, it came down to this crap.
