It’s Not You, It’s Me
Revisado: 01-23-22
I get 2 audible credits a month and I save those for books I REALLY want to read/listen to that I can’t get on Scribd or NetGalley or have a ridiculously long wait time at my online library. The hype surrounding this book had me really wanting it and I didn’t feel bad at all for using a sacred credit on it even though I knew a ton of new release titles were coming out in a few weeks from authors that I always buy their books.
Instantly I was disappointed with the narrator, she had a breathy almost whisper type quality to her voice that was like nail grating on chalkboard to me although oddly enough, I didn’t mind her voice for the male characters even though they all sounded the same. I trudged through though because the reviews were so amazing and in time her voice stopped bothering me as much and towards the 2nd half of the book, got less breathy.
The next issue was I disliked Chloe, a lot. I wasn’t sure if it was because I associated her with the narrator or just because I didn’t connect with her but I realized at Mrs. Brigg’s home and especially afterwards in the motel, I just did not like her and a different narrator wouldn’t have changed that.
I kept waiting for the twist that everyone was talking about. Halfway through, I figured out what that twist was especially when I noticed there was over an hour left on the book and it had seemingly wrapped up. The twist was predictable and boring despite the author trying to take a detour to get to it. Instead of making it shocking, it came across as convoluted and messy. So many people involved and aware of these murders, then and now and no one was able to put it together?
Chloe is not only self destructive but a walking tornado taking out pretty much anyone who comes into contact with her. I felt no sympathy for her at all but instead those around her whose lives were ruined because of her.
I still gave the book 3 stars although the audiobook rating would be 2.5 stars because so many others enjoyed it but I felt the character development was lacking and non existent for many of the characters who played minor roles especially Riley and whomever her stepmother was- I don’t even remember her name and literally just finished the book 15 minutes ago. I felt the storyline was a good one though and had it been tweaked a bit- or a lot- it could have been a 5 star book but unfortunately it just fell flat for me.

What?!!?
Revisado: 09-22-21
I knew I was in for a good book when I saw Alice Feeney had another one coming out so added it to my preorder list. As usual, I was not disappointed.
The twists at the end hit me like a Mack Truck. I did not see them coming at all. Excellent book and the narration was perfect. Best Book Of The Year material for sure!

Someone who needs Mina's assistance and who knows exactly how to make her comply. It's 20 hours to landing. A lot can happen in 20 hours....

Riveting!
Revisado: 09-07-21
After reading the reviews about it being confusing with so many point of views and one narrator- I was a little worried but I never had an issue with it while listening. It was very easy to figure out who was who very quickly into each chapter.
The story was packed with suspense throughout the whole story and kept me listening. The ending threw me for a loop and was not what I was expecting. Excellent! I cannot wait for her next book.

Historia
Leigh Collier has worked hard to build what looks like a normal life. She has a good job as a defense attorney, a daughter doing well in school, and even her divorce is relatively civilized - her life is just as unremarkable as she’d always hoped it would be. But Leigh’s ordinary life masks a childhood that was far from average...a childhood tarnished by secrets, broken by betrayal, and finally torn apart by a devastating act of violence.

Wow! Just WOW!
Revisado: 08-22-21
Karin Slaughter rarely if ever disappoints but I was surprised to see many negative reviews because of Covid being a theme in this book. I didn’t see that, I saw a book that was true to our current times and not pushing hidden agendas like others apparently.
The backstory was hard to swallow at times, child sexual abuse is never a pretty topic to read about but she nailed it with Callie’s mixed feelings of love and her struggle throughout the rest of her life and Lee’s feelings of guilt and responsibility and need to fix things.
Although this wasn’t really a “who dunnit” since it became clear early on there were still quite a few shocks and twists and turns I didn’t see coming.
I absolutely loved this book despite it not being a Will Trent continuation and instead a stand alone. Some of Karin Slaughter’s best works have been, in my opinion, stand alone novels. Kathleen Early is the best audiobook narrator. I know I’ll never not enjoy listening to her when I see her listed as the narrator. A definite 5 stars!!

Far Fetched
Revisado: 07-25-21
I was really excited for this book and had it on my wishlist for months waiting for it to be released but now I wished I saved my credit. It was far fetched which I expect for many thrillers but this was too much and too convoluted.
The barrator was fine except for the man/child characters.

This One Was Missing Something.
Revisado: 07-22-21
I can’t rave enough about the Mike Bowditch series. I look forward to the next one all year and always buy it the minute it is released. Somehow I missed this one being released at the end of June so bought it as soon as I saw it and stopped reading my current book to start it.
It immediately started out with action and the action kept going throughout the book. The format didn’t bother me although it may have read better if it just started with the previous day and worked it’s way to the present time. I also didn’t hate that this was sort of a solo mission but I did miss his interaction with other characters especially Charlie and Ora and as much as I like Dani, I really enjoyed the ones with him and Stacy working as a team. I devoured this book in a day but I felt it was missing something. I’d really love to see this series as a television series.

Am I Setting My Expectations Too High?
Revisado: 07-19-21
I pre-ordered this book. I waited for it to come out. I love her other works but this one I had a hard time with. The main character, Alice was neurotic and I just couldn’t like her. Her reactions to simple things were way over the top which I know was to add suspense to the book but it became corny. Everything anyone said to her she took as a threat.
I had an idea of who the culprit was but not the twist at the end but the twist sort of made the whole story convoluted and out there. It was a solid read and I read it quickly but it wasn’t jaw dropping.

I’m so Upset. I Wanted to Love It.
Revisado: 07-15-21
I was so excited when I heard Tess Gerritsen had another book out. I love her books and I had high hopes for this one. Maybe I set my standards way too high?
Student/Teacher affairs seem to be a central theme in many books lately so it felt like an “already been done” story from the beginning. Gerritsen does have a way with developing characters and her villains can be ruthless which made it more interesting. I like the narrator but hate her Boston accent which made it sound almost cheesy. I was able to figure out the culprit pretty quickly in the book so it wasn’t really like a whodunnit or why as it was pretty easy to narrow down the suspects.
I wanted to love it but I just didn’t. Maybe the next one will be better.

Quick Listen! Great Beach Read!
Revisado: 07-05-21
This is the first book I’ve listened to by this author and the description was intriguing so I figured I’d try it out. I listened to the first chapter last night before bed and it kept my interest. The narrator wasn’t horrible as others claimed but l found her over-pronunciation of some words like environment slightly irritating.
To be honest, Laurel was an extremely hard character to like for most of the book. She was self-centered and hypocritical however she does grow on you as the book progresses. I finished the rest of the book today. I found as I kept listening I kept wanting to find out what happens next. The townsfolk were creepy and I didn’t know if Laurel was crazy or something nefarious was really going on. Overall, I was really pleased with this book and I would definitely try another book by this author.
I requested this book from the publisher or author directly in exchange for an honest review.
