A Beta Attempt
Revisado: 10-04-18
What I liked: *a variety of techniques were introduced.
*narrator seemed sincere
*the walking meditation--nice option!
What I didn't like:
*please, NO MUSIC. The first few sessions were especially horrible
*Why can't your editorial staff correct the problem with "lie" and "lay"? That constant error is JARRING!
*some of the repetitive phrasing was off-putting ("blow your belly up like a little balloon" x 10000)
Nice to see Audible attempt something like this; it just needs work.

That is, if she makes it through the Change - and not all of those who are Marked do. It sucks to begin a new life, especially away from her friends, and on top of that, Zoey is no ordinary fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the vampire Goddess Nyx.

Mixed Bag
Revisado: 05-07-09
I was interested in trying this book because of the popularity of the Twilight series. As many others have said, the first part seemed slow, but the book became more interesting later. Somewhat formulaic with the teen girl-rivalry thing, and the motley group of almost-outcasts dethroning the beautiful-in-crowd, but formula can be a satisfying read to many teens.
I was a bit stunned with the b*** j** scenes follwing so soon after "This is Audible Kids." Some re-thinking needs to be done there.
I kept forgetting it was about vampires since so many references were wiccan.
And I know this is picky, but can't an author or her editorial staff use "lie" and "lay" correctly? I don't mean as dialogue from the characters, but when it appears in narration.
All-in-all, not sensational, but not terrible either. It's worth reading one more book in the series.

Historia
Inspired by a near-mythic event on the wild Florida frontier at the turn of the 20th century, Shadow Country re-imagines the legend of the inspired Everglades sugar planter and notorious outlaw E. J. Watson, who drives himself relentlessly toward his own violent end at the hands of neighbors who mostly admired him, in a killing that obsessed his favorite son.

Not your average "story"
Revisado: 04-27-09
If you're looking to while away some time with a pleasant or exciting "story," this is NOT the book for you. Matthiessen analyzes and re-constructs the larger-than-life figure of E.J. Watson is great detail and from many points of view. Some mysteries about Watson's life are revealed, but ultimately, many questions remain. The pioneering "settling" of the Everglades is seen for what it was: a raping and destruction of what made it unique and beautiful. It stands as an object lesson of how lands and countries are settled or subjugated. Racial injustices continue this theme of "to the victor belong the spoils." This book is filled to overflowing with characters, history, and the raw dialogue and life of another century. The narrator does a great job of delineating the myriad of different characters. A trip into the Everglades today reveals that the character of E.J. Watson still lives in the memories and folklore of present-day Florida. That was where I first heard about him, and since then I've waited for Audible to carry this book. A GREAT read, but definitely not for a reader looking only for entertainment.

Great read!
Revisado: 01-31-07
The ancient Roman world springs to life in Harris' narration. Cicero is seen as a very real "hero," warts and all. The intrigue, pride, ambition of politics was just as true in ancient Rome as it is today. Harris portrays all this with a wonderful realism that will make you sorry when the book ends. If your only memory of Cicero is high school Latin or Shakespeare's JULIUS CAESAR, you are in for real enjoyment with this book. I just hope there will be a future volume, continuing the involved destinies of Cicery with Caesar.

Haller is a Lincoln Lawyer, a criminal defense pro who operates out of the backseat of his Lincoln Town Car, to defend clients at the bottom of the legal food chain. It's no wonder that he is despised by cops, prosecutors, and even some of his own clients. But an investigator is murdered for getting too close to the truth and Haller quickly discovers that his search for innocence has taken him face to face with a kind of evil as pure as a flame.

The story was engrossing and often surprising. The narrator really did it justice, with his many voices and interpretations.
Only one criticism..........LOSE THE MUSIC!
Very distracting.

Overall, a good read
Revisado: 08-10-06
The Templar Legacy is an interesting mix of history, speculation, religion, and thriller. The reader has to be ready to suspend some disbelief: the secret-agent-type heroes are incredibly slow at times (evidently they had never heard of a transponder) and the evil bad-guy is uncannily lucky and able to pull correct hunches out of the blue. The end of the book leans a little toward the preachy side, but I suppose it's impossible for an author to leave his personal opinions out of a book. If you can get by those things, you will enjoy a lively, "page/turning" story with many thought-provoking perspectives on history and present-day.

Satisfying
Revisado: 06-03-06
I hesitated to read this book, because I felt I didn't always "get" Erdrich's books. But I found myself quickly drawn into the narrative, the time period, the portrayal of small-town-midwestern life, and most of all, into the personalities of the characters in this book. Plot points are resolved, not always in the happiest of ways, but in a way that was true to life. This book goes onto my all-time-favorites list.

Historia
It was a crime so brutal, it changed the lives of even the most hardened homicide cops. The Haas family murders left a scar on the community nothing can erase, but everyone agrees that convicting the killer, Karl Dahl, is a start. Only Judge Carey Moore seems to be standing in the way. Her ruling that Dahl's prior criminal record is inadmissible raises a public outcry, and puts the judge in grave danger.

GREAT read!
Revisado: 04-27-06
This is a book with many twists and turns, exciting plot, the solving of a brutal crime, and yet lightened by occasional humor. The narrator's voice for the "criminal" was excellent...the childlike quality and pace matched the character's stunted soul. For me, the conclusion seemed to drag out a little, but that's being a little nit-picky about a really great read.
