Historia
Graduate student Wendy Zemansky was hoping for a normal semester at an isolated university in upstate New York. Since coming off disability and starting medication for bipolar disorder, Wendy longs to feel like a “real” functioning adult, a respected colleague in her writing program. But when her roommate goes missing, Wendy plunges into an investigation that is roadblocked by vainglorious professors, specious doctors, and dubious friends.

Not as twisty or interesting as hoped
Revisado: 02-26-25
I enjoyed this listen and will say it’s a good one for slight intrigue without being put on edge too much, but overall I had hoped from the synopsis that it would be more suspenseful than it was… a bit slow and nothing felt particularly shocking or excited. Appreciated getting to learn a little more about mental illness and enjoyed examining the roles people played in the protagonists life in helping support her vs unintentionally or intentionally perpetuating the issues she was dealing with, but probably wouldn’t go out of my way to recommend it to anyone. Made for an entertaining enough listen while on a 30 hour plane journey, though!

New concepts!
Revisado: 01-20-25
As an avid fan of the (occasionally fantasy related) mysteries, I’ve heard a lot of the same stories told in new ways. I can’t say I’ve ever heard of a premise quite like this one, though! Very creative story that still leaves a few questions, but if you are ok with suspending your disbelief of reality as you know it for a good hypothetical scenario, it’s a good listen! I always love an English accent and the narrator was talented enough, but I personally was a bit annoyed by the nasal whine of the narrator as well as how all his female voices tended to sound like they were 80 year old women off their rockers. Have to listen closely to get all the twists, but overall I’d recommend this to anyone tired of the same old story!

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

Slower than anticipated
Revisado: 12-22-22
Most likely due to the fact that most of my sci-if mystery fiction has been YA with female protagonists, I found this a little slow moving and not overwhelmingly suspenseful. That being said, the vocabulary of was better than my YA books and I especially appreciated a story line with a dog as one of the most important relationships.

Historia
Two women. Many aliases. Meg Williams. Maggie Littleton. Melody Wilde. Different names for the same person, depending on the town, depending on the job. She's a con artist who erases herself to become whoever you need her to be—a college student. A life coach. A real estate agent. Nothing about her is real. She slides alongside you and tells you exactly what you need to hear, and by the time she's done, you've likely lost everything.

Skip the book, watch Imposters
Revisado: 07-07-22
Pros: positive female characters and relationships, not a romance, and a reminder that everything is not as it seems.
Cons: slow moving and not that interesting. Basically just one person stalking another person who is also stalking someone, only without the intrigue or dangerous feelings that would typically accompany the topic.
This book was fine. The plot reminded me of one of my favorite shows, Imposters, but without the witty banter and endearing characters... so, less interesting, haha. I read this because it’s a this months read for Book Club, but also because someone had mentioned it was a thriller that keeps you on your toes. Lawlz. This was NOT a thriller, and, despite finishing the audiobook in two days, I was never that interested in what the twists may be. The twists did come, but were mostly predictable and simple. Fine book, but not great. The narrators were both good, too, though sounded slightly similar so I probably wouldn’t remember who was who if not for the verbal introduction each time the characters switched.

Captivating and familiar yet with new twists
Revisado: 07-05-22
I really enjoyed this book! It had a few elements of classic fairytales, but a lot of new content and touches. I liked all of the characters and found myself wishing it was a series rather than a single book. I predicted bits and pieces along the way, but the book was set up well enough to clue you in yet leave you curious to discover the truth.
