Historia
Peggy Caserta, founder of the famous Haight-Ashbury hippie boutique Mnasidika and lover and girlfriend of Janis Joplin, was a Louisiana homecoming queen turned airsick stewardess who eventually landed in 1960s San Francisco and set up shop. Her store was a hang-out for The Grateful Dead and Big Brother and the Holding Company; it was where Wes Wilson’s posters hung, where Bill Graham sold concert tickets, and where Owsley’s LSD was enjoyed.

Good book
Revisado: 09-09-22
Aside from the fact that the reader sounded a lot like Bobby Hill than she did Janis, I enjoyed this book.

Historia
Alone with her new husband on a tiny Pacific atoll, a young woman, combing the beach, finds an odd aluminum container washed up out of the lagoon, and beside it on the sand something glitters: a gold tooth in a scorched human skull. The investigation that follows uncovers an extraordinarily complex and puzzling true-crime story. Only Vincent Bugliosi, who recounted his successful prosecution of mass murderer Charles Manson in the best seller Helter Skelter, was able to draw together the hundreds of conflicting details of the mystery and reconstruct what really happened....

Interesting case
Revisado: 11-01-19
The story if the actual events are fascinating and well told. The second half of the book ... Bugliosi is TEDIOUS in the minute detail with wich he re tells nearly the entire trial ... Seemingly in real time. He is quite positive he is the world's greatest litigator, and never missed an opportunity to tell you. In detail. I skipped the last few chapters because I just didn't want to hear any more... book could be 2/3 the length.

Bad.
Revisado: 09-03-19
I really, really, really wanted to hear this story. I read other bad reviews and listened to the preview - I thought "I can put up w the shitty narration" and I went ahead & down loaded the book....
The bad narration is one thing - he reads his book like a really bad prose poet, trying to sell his digressive, cliche and way too abundant similes and metaphors. It seems like this author has read WAY too much Hunter S Thompson or other prosaic writers, and fails miserably at it.
Just tell the story dummy.
I give up. A much better WSOP book is Varconi's (?) Positively Fifth Street.
This guy stinks on ice. Like a long dead catfish, festering in the Vegas sun, it's bloated & rotten & gaseous body collecting flies and repelling passers by with its death stench & grotesqueness. (hate that? you'll hate this book)

Terrible performance
Revisado: 05-29-19
I couldn't wait for this book to show up on audible. it was one my favorite books at one time. this reading is distracting. The voices and impressions awful. I'm forcing myself to finish it, but can only do so in short bursts. I wish someone would just read it straight and not "perform" so obnoxiously. yuck.

Historia
The very strange but nevertheless true story of the dark underbelly of a 1960s hippie utopia. Laurel Canyon in the 1960s and early 1970s was a magical place where a dizzying array of musical artists congregated to create much of the music that provided the soundtrack to those turbulent times. But there was a dark side to that scene as well. Many didn't make it out alive, and many of those deaths remain shrouded in mystery to this day.

I'm on chapter 6 and all this stupid book seems to be is an endless list of people who died and their tangential connections to other people who died. Is there a point to this story? Super annoying. I wish the author had "caught a bullet" before he published this garbage.

Historia
In 2007, a short blogpost by Gawker Media outed PayPal founder and billionaire investor Peter Thiel as gay. Thiel's sexuality had been known to close friends and family, but he didn't consider himself a public figure, and believed the information was private. This post would be the casus belli for a meticulously plotted conspiracy that would end nearly a decade later with a $140 million dollar judgment against Gawker and its bankruptcy. Only later would the world learn that Gawker's demise was not incidental - it had been masterminded by Thiel.

Almost un-listenable
Revisado: 03-19-18
This book is a meditation on conspiracy. It is not - as I wish it would have been- a narrative recounting of the fascinating story of Hogan v Gawker. Instead it's chock full of digressions and way too many Machiavellian quotes and boring history lessons.
The author may be a fine writer, but he reads terribly in a voice that sometimes is so nasally snot-filled and phlegmy that it's gross.
I have over 3hrs left. I am so interested in the actual story that I may make it to the end... but it's tough.
