Depraved
Revisado: 04-19-25
This was a horrible story with dozens of plot holes. It was sloppy and relied on violence and depravity to carry the prose. But it didn’t carry it. The whole story sunk and with no protagonist to be found, I didn’t really care. The ending was THE MOST UNSATISFYING finale I’ve ever listened to/read. The voice actors did a great job and they are the only reason I kept listening but skip this one. Honestly. It’s awful.

I loved how this book traveled through time with the same characters. It was neat because glass making goes back hundreds of years and hasn’t changed much. I really enjoyed it.

Interesting premise…to a point

This has a classically short-story-like unsatisfying ending. It was so immersive until the end. Then it just went completely off the rails.

Historia
Lana Fleming’s sister has vanished from the set of TV’s hottest show, and no one seems to care. Desperate for answers, Lana sneaks in as an extra, only to get stranded with Griffin Hart, an A-list action star with a reputation for good abs and bad decisions. Though Griffin didn’t expect to be cast as a librarian’s sidekick in a real-life thriller, he’s weirdly into it—and into her. Even more unsettling—she sees right through his playboy persona. But their meet-cute soon turns deadly when they uncover a Hollywood scandal for the ages.

Historia
Esme is born into a world of words. Motherless and irrepressibly curious, she spends her childhood in the Scriptorium, an Oxford garden shed in which her father and a team of dedicated lexicographers are collecting words for the very first Oxford English Dictionary. Young Esme’s place is beneath the sorting table, unseen and unheard. One day a slip of paper containing the word bondmaid flutters beneath the table. She rescues the slip and, learning that the word means “slave girl,” begins to collect other words discarded or neglected by the dictionary men.

This painstakingly researched historical piece of fiction made me think about language in a new way. I’m so grateful she wrote it and I found it. The characters were alive as was the setting. An absolute triumph. Lovely stuff!

Historia
To the outside world, they seem to have it all. Cassie Barrett, a renowned anthropologist, and Alex Rivers, one of Hollywood's hottest actors, met on the set of a motion picture in Africa. They shared childhood tales, toasted the future, and declared their love in a fairy-tale wedding. But when they return to California, something alters the picture of their perfect marriage. A frightening pattern is taking shape - a cycle of hurt, denial, and promises, thinly veiled by glamour.

Too much going on
Revisado: 01-29-25
The first and third portions of this book, narrated by a male, were well crafted and fluid. The middle portion, narrated by a female and written in 1st person POV was unnecessary. The idea of placing Native American culture and spirituality against a heavy curtain of physical abuse was an odd choice and maybe even a little tone deaf. This was written over 30 years ago, so it was a different time. I don’t know. Parts of it were great and parts weren’t. The ending was abrupt.
