When one of Serilda's outlandish tales draws the attention of the sinister Erlking and his undead hunters, she finds herself swept away into a grim world where ghouls and phantoms prowl the earth and hollow-eyed ravens track her every move. The king orders Serilda to complete the impossible task of spinning straw into gold, or be killed for telling falsehoods. In her desperation, Serilda unwittingly summons a mysterious boy to her aid. He agrees to help her… for a price. Love isn't meant to be part of the bargain.

Every now and then I read something which leaves me content and yet still wanting a bit more. This is one. I'm so sad that it is over, but so glad I invested my time in this. Wonderful story, wonderful storytelling.

I'm loving Shaw's books. They are fun, not too heavy, but well plotted and well written. I love the premise and her characters are easy to relate to and care about. Even the devil is likeable!

Revisado: 05-19-20
loved this story. I'm always looking for a well written MG fiction worthy of an adult's time. This was it! I fell in love with all the characters instantly except for Luna (she seemed like a spoiled child playing tricks) but she soon captured my heart too. The swamp monster and the perfectly tiny dragon were my favorites though.

Historia
If 14-year-old Cassandra Reed makes it through her first day at Miss Castwell’s Institute for the Magical Instruction of Young Ladies without anyone discovering her secret, maybe, just maybe, she’ll let herself believe that she really does belong at Miss Castwell’s. Except Cassandra Reed’s real name is Sarah Smith and up until now, she lived her whole life in the Warren, serving a magical family, the Winters, as all non-magical “Snipes” are bound by magical Guardian law to do. That is, until one day, Sarah accidentally levitates Mrs. Winter’s favorite vase in the parlor....
