Historia
Fat Talk argues for a reclaiming of “fat,” which is not synonymous with “unhealthy,” “inactive,” or “lazy.” Talking to researchers and activists, as well as parents and kids across a broad swath of the country, Sole-Smith lays bare how America’s focus on solving the “childhood obesity epidemic” has perpetuated a second crisis of disordered eating and body hatred for kids of all sizes. She exposes our society’s internalized fatphobia and elucidates how and why we need to stop “preventing obesity” and start supporting kids in the bodies they have.

Needed Now!
Revisado: 01-08-25
I want someone to say “I love you and I don’t want you to change your body,” as the author suggests. That would have been a game changer for 13YO me.
It took me a while to get through this book because it is so packed with good stuff! Many nonfiction books, especially in the self-help category have one or two ideas, then pontificate for 200+ pages. Not so here. The author is a professional journalist and it shows
She brings stories to life with the eye of a journalist and doesn’t shy away from the cringy and awkward feelings that come up when we discuss weight.
I’ve already bought another of her books. I really appreciate these areas of discussion as a person who has recovered from an eating disorders, taught to me in childhood by diet culture. My parents never talked about their weight, and they didn’t need to…because then, like now, it was everywhere. I’m also a mom of two girls who are genetically predisposed to ED, so this book is a comfort, a useful tool, and a companion.

Cute!
Revisado: 12-20-24
This was a cute, quick, holiday listen. I loved how sweet the two protagonists were. I can't get behind van sex, but hey...forced proximity is fun, right? All in all, an enjoyable listen.

Still good, but slightly less than the others
Revisado: 12-20-24
I appreciate that Eira is growing and changing in this book, but I feels like the second book of a trilogy. There is one really important part where Eria gets up close and personal with the Pillars that sets you up to really hate them. She's feeling so much angst about the death of her brother and avenging him that she's missig connecting with her Solaris co-competitors. Eria's making mistakes left and right in this book, and I only hope that it pays off in the end.

Historia
Last night, Eira killed a man. However justified her actions were, many now regard her as a cold-blooded murderer and a heretic. But there's no time to explain herself. She barely has a chance to wash the blood off her hands before the Tournament of Five Kingdoms begins. Sequestered with the other champions for the duration of the tournament, Eira must now navigate the games, her competition, the enemies who hunt her head, and—worse than all the rest—being stuck in close quarters with the man who broke her heart.

So much is happening!
Revisado: 12-20-24
We finally get to the Tournament of Sorcerers! Eira and the team are fighting to beat the other teams, making friends, and trying to figure out what Ulvarth, the big baddie is up to. The end goes out with a bang, and I don't think we're going to get resolution on a lot of it till the fifth book.
The whole Eria/Cullen angst keeps going, and Eria has a new interest: Olivin.
I enjoyed it, felt like it was fast paced and a fun read.

Historia
A commander who bled to defend her people, Ahnna is haunted by two beliefs. The first is that she failed to protect Ithicana from invasion. And the second is that saving her homeland means leaving it behind forever. The Maridrinians left Ithicana in ruins and its people impoverished. So when the wealthy kingdom of Harendell claims her as a bride for its crown prince, Ahnna is prepared to do whatever it takes to gain influence as the future queen. And to control the gold that comes with the throne.

Action packed, but missing that “je ne said quoi”
Revisado: 11-05-24
There was tons of action from beginning to end. The middle dragged a bit, and I could do with less self-loathing from Ahnna. I didn’t find Ahnna to be as compelling as Lara or Keris. James was okay. I finally felt some tension toward the end of the book when we really didn’t know what bombs King Edward was going to drop. I’m glad I read it, but…not as good as The Bridge Kingdom, which had me in knots from beginning to end!

In “You Just Need to Lose Weight,” Aubrey Gordon equips listeners with the facts and figures to reframe myths about fatness in order to dismantle the anti-fat bias ingrained in how we think about and treat fat people. Bringing her dozen years of community organizing and training to bear, Gordon shares the rhetorical approaches she and other organizers employ to not only counter these pernicious myths, but to dismantle the anti-fat bias that so often underpin them.

An authoritative voice
Revisado: 05-13-23
I started listening to the podcast Maintenance Phase by Aubrey Gordon and loved it. I love the way the author thinks and how they cut to the heart of the issue. As a very fat person, I think AG is a authority on the experiences of fat people, and I appreciate their speaking out. This book is a primer on anti-fat bias and could be a good springboard to further reading.
